“The global water crisis is a tragedy but is also an opportunity to transform the economics of water — and to start by valuing water properly so as to recognize its scarcity,” said Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director General of the World Trade Organization and one of the commission’s co-chairs in a statement. With nearly three billion people already in areas experiencing unstable water trends and several cities sinking due to the loss of below-ground water, densely populated areas such as northwestern India, northeastern China and southern and eastern Europe will bear the brunt of global water mismanagement, the report says. “The global water crisis is a ticking time bomb. Even so, a lack of public funds being devoted to water issues by lawmakers around the world will do little to solve the problem. Governments “can’t even react to the symptoms of the water problem, let alone solve the problems if they’re being fiscally strangled,” said UCL's Mazzucato.

Democratic nominee Kamala Harris said on her campaign's X account that Trump rambled and "looked confused" on stage during the event. Almost 30 minutes into the town hall event, Trump paused the event so someone in the audience could receive treatment. Two minutes later, as Trump faced the fifth question of the night, another person became ill and the song played again. Fed rate cuts are likely to help push bitcoin and other risk assets higher, but some stablecoin issuers could suffer a hit to their revenue. Tether (USDT) and USD Coin (USDC) dominate the market, making up 70% and 21%, respectively, according to CryptoQuant. "As rates begin to fall, that has a giant impact on their [profit and loss] and their bottom line." Stablecoins – cryptocurrencies that promise a fixed value peg to another asset, usually the U.S. dollar – are widely seen as crypto's killer app. Jeremy Allaire, CEO of USDC issuer Circle, told CNBC lower interest rates are "a very good thing" for the company because lower interest rates will likely increase investment and economic activity – which would benefit the company.

CNN —The North American Aerospace Defense Command says it detected four Russian military aircraft flying near Alaska on Monday, less than two weeks after US Army soldiers were deployed to the area as part of a “force protection operation” amid an increase in Russian and Chinese military exercises in the region. The Russian aircraft remained in international airspace in Alaska’s Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) and did not enter American or Canadian sovereign airspace, NORAD said in a statement. “This Russian activity in the Alaska ADIZ occurs regularly and is not seen as a threat,” the statement said. NORAD intercepted Russian military aircraft flying near Alaska several times this month. Though the Biden administration has worked to resume high-level communications with China, including between military leaders, Beijing remains the US’ major military competitor.

The market cap for stablecoins — cryptocurrencies that promise a fixed value peg to another asset — has recently reached all-time-high levels after a sharp drop in 2023. Monthly payments in stablecoins tripled to $1.4 trillion in the 12 months leading up to July. This could have investment implications for Robinhood down the road, he added, as it "continues integrating stablecoins for crypto trading & cross-border transfers." Crypto investors watch stablecoins closely for evidence of demand, liquidity and activity in the market. PayPal last year launched its own dollar-backed stablecoin, while Visa has been supporting stablecoin payments and Mastercard is supporting stablecoin wallets and other crypto card programs.

Ether, the second largest cryptocurrency by market cap, is nearly 50% off its all-time high. The ETH/BTC ratio, a sentiment indicator reflecting the relative value of ether compared with bitcoin, is at its lowest level since April 2021. "Bitcoin has a very well established use case, which is a store-of-value currency," said Julio Moreno, head of research at CryptoQuant. Some investors had hoped ether could compete with bitcoin, whose rate of supply growth slows every four years after the halving. However, ether supply has been rising at a fast pace this year, and is on track to resume its pre-Merge levels in the next three months, according to CryptoQuant.

CNN —When Adelaide Saywell posted on TikTok last month that SSRIs, a commonly prescribed antidepressant medication, could make people more vulnerable to heat, it went viral and sparked a deluge of comments. Adelaide Saywell received a flood of surprised comments when she posted about the link between SSRIs and heat intolerance. Dehydration puts people at risk of heat exhaustion and, in particularly severe cases, heat stroke, which is dangerous and potentially deadly. Sondeep Shankar/Bloomberg/Getty ImagesScientists and doctors are still trying to unpick the complex relationship between SSRIs and heat. It is partly the reason why medical professionals don’t always talk about heat when they prescribe these anti-depressants.

According to data from CryptoQuant, the flow of bitcoin leaving miners wallets for exchanges – which indicates a selling event – reached a two-month high last weekend. Additionally, miner selling through over-the-counter desks saw its biggest daily volume since late March. CryptoQuant shows the hourly transfer of bitcoin from miners to exchanges rose to more than 3,000 bitcoins on June 9. "Daily bitcoin miner revenues stand today at about $35 million, down 55% from their 2024 peak reached in March." That's mostly as a result of "depressed" transaction fees, however, rather than the slashing of miners' block reward at the halving.

A group of current and former OpenAI employees published an open letter Tuesday describing concerns about the artificial intelligence industry's rapid advancement despite a lack of oversight and an absence of whistleblower protections for those who wish to speak up. "AI companies have strong financial incentives to avoid effective oversight, and we do not believe bespoke structures of corporate governance are sufficient to change this," the employees wrote. The letter also details the current and former employees' concerns about insufficient whistleblower protections for the AI industry, saying that without effective government oversight, employees are in a relatively unique position to hold companies accountable. "Ordinary whistleblower protections are insufficient because they focus on illegal activity, whereas many of the risks we are concerned about are not yet regulated." Four anonymous OpenAI employees and seven former ones, including Daniel Kokotajlo, Jacob Hilton, William Saunders, Carroll Wainwright and Daniel Ziegler, signed the letter.

"It could take three to five months for bitcoin to re-test recent highs," H.C. Wainwright analyst Mike Colonnese told CNBC. BTC.CM= 3M mountain Bitcoin has fallen 11% this quarter Bitcoin miners offer high beta exposure to bitcoin and have historically outperformed it during bull cycles, he added. Colonnese also pointed out that corrections between 25% and 30% are "par for the course" for bitcoin, even in bull cycles. "Looking at previous price cycles, bitcoin has historically peaked between one to one and a half years after a halving event with the bull stage running longer in each subsequent cycle," Colonnese said. The bitcoin halving is set to take place in the next few days, which will cut miners' main stream of revenue in half. "We believe a bitcoin price above $60,000-$65,000 means the halving is de-risked for nearly all public miners," Needham analyst John Todaro wrote in a note to clients on Tuesday. It currently costs miners between $36,000 and $52,700 to mine a single bitcoin, Todaro said. Miners offer amplified exposure to bitcoin's price action, which has been more volatile since the launch of bitcoin ETFs introduced more leverage to the market. "That's propelled bitcoin to a threshold where the miners are really generating healthy economics," said Colonnese.
