An unusually high number of people were bitten by sharks in early July near New York. Prior to last year, New York had a very low number of shark bites, according to the Florida Museum International Shark Attack File. While the localized spike is unusual, the total number of unprovoked shark bites worldwide has averaged about 74 per year. Why sharks bite humansThere are roughly 520 species of sharks, according to the University of Florida. "Shark bites are a function of the number of sharks, but also the number of humans in the water," he said.

Kaye Hearn, a justice on South Carolina’s Supreme Court, wrote the majority opinion this month that struck down the state’s six-week abortion ban. Two women, Court of Appeals Judges Stephanie McDonald and Aphrodite Konduros, were initially in the running for Hearn’s seat but withdrew Tuesday. (The Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals, the state’s highest court for criminal cases, also has an all-male bench; the Oklahoma Supreme Court, which hears civil cases, has both female and male justices.) In 1988, Toal was elected to the South Carolina Supreme Court. Hearn, who was elected to the state’s Court of Appeals in 1995, joined her on the bench in 2010.

A man who authorities said confessed to killing five people and told them he'd been high on methamphetamines for days has been arrested in the fatal shootings in South Carolina. The scene of the shootings in Inman, S.C. Google MapsDrayton lived at the home for two weeks, the sheriff’s office said in a statement. Thomas Ellis Anderson, 37; Adam Daniel Morley, 32; Mark Allen Hewitt, 59; and Roman Christean Megael Rocha, 19, were killed, the sheriff’s office said. Authorities responded to the house at 7:45 p.m. Sunday and found four people fatally wounded, the sheriff's office said. Someone that hadn’t slept in four days — they’re probably not thinking.”It wasn't clear when Drayton would be extradited to South Carolina.
