Does this style look like anything you’ve seen before? That’s what’s happening in this Japanese woodblock print — only it’s Tokyo (then called Edo), the year is 1857, and we’re crossing the Sumida River. This summer scene, titled “Great Bridge: Sudden Rain at Atake,” is one in a series of at least 118 different views Hiroshige created about life in 19th-century Edo across the seasons. In fall:In winter:In spring:And of course, there’s the summer rain you spent some time with. Ms. May recently curated a show of Japanese prints at the museum.

The PaintingAs you may recall, the painting you just spent time with is “Nocturne in Blue and Silver,” by the American artist James McNeill Whistler. Even Whistler Blackcomb ski resort was only a two-hour drive from home — where the diverse terrain and charming village are world-famous and Winter Olympics-worthy for good reason. The ride in a private taxi to Niseko, Hokkaido took around two hours. Here are five reasons Niseko offered a better experience than Whistler, but why I would still choose the North American ski resort over the Japanese ski destination. Even if the snow in Whistler isn't as consistent, it surpasses the Japanese ski town for many reasons. We will probably make our way back to a different ski resort in Japan while living in Asia.

CNN —Debra Dolan was 21 and on her first solo trip when she first sent a postcard to herself. Over the decades, she’s sent hundreds of postcards to herself from trips across the world. “I felt the most free traveling, I felt the most independent traveling, I felt most myself traveling, my most grateful, always, traveling. And I think that’s what the postcards capture.”A life in postcardsDolan says all the postcards she's ever sent herself have arrived. Dolan’s always sent her postcards mid-trip, she never “cheats” and posts them once she’s back home in Canada.

Below the townhouse residences are subterranean parking spots that eliminate the need for on-street parking. Here's a closer look around — and under — London's newest $74 million listing, which is being sold fully furnished. This can be achieved on a subterranean level because the rear garden is one level below street grade.

The American industrialist Charles Lang Freer collected all kinds of art, from Asian ceramics to paintings by James McNeill Whistler. But he considered ancient Egyptian art the “greatest” in the world, acquiring more than a hundred small-scale Egyptian treasures as much as five millennia old. Freer’s rise to riches was a classic Gilded Age story. Born in Kingston, N.Y., in 1854, he made a fortune in railcar manufacturing, and by his mid-40s he could step back from business. I have tried lately to reason a little with myself; to think to what purpose to devote my few remaining years.”

Check out this story on how ski resort expansions are driving up local home prices and how Whistler is drawing home-buyers for its year-round attractions. In Aspen, Colo., a 12,000-square-foot lodge makes use of reclaimed wood from Yellowstone. The south-facing windows look out at the Rocky Mountains and overhead is a pentagonal truss system with exposed beams.
Richard Dalzell, a retired tech executive living in greater Seattle, has skied all over the U.S. But when it came time to buy a ski home, he found what he needed over the border in Canada, in Whistler, British Columbia, a four-hour drive away. In addition to convenience, the double-mountain resort town—with a year-round population of 13,948 that can surge up to 55,000 at peak times—offered Mr. Dalzell, 65 years old, and his wife, Kathie Dalzell, 64, reliable snowfall at low altitudes and long ski runs.
