The presidential election was two weeks ago, and the country’s liberals are already deep into the blame phase. Before those premature post-mortems get fully baked into conventional wisdom, though, I wanted to flag a handful of observations about the race and how it’s already being interpreted — some caveats, some counterpoints, some context that may help us understand the meaning of a big messy election in a big messy country, at least until we get the actually-reliable voter data. In the end, it seems, Donald Trump’s margin in the national popular vote will be about 1.6 percentage points — the narrowest victory since razor-thin 2000. The election did mark a decisive shift: a broad, uniform move to the right, down to the county level, that carried a Republican to a popular vote win for the first time in 20 years. But this was not a wipeout even like the one in 2008 (let alone 1932, 1972 or 1984).

“People are afraid of walking the streets right now; there’s a lot of fear … a lot of fear,” Sanchez said. “Shrinking worker (supply) in a period in which those sectors need more workers and are having a hard time finding workers will clearly generate a slowdown,” Peri said. Although temporary farm visas — known as H-2A — do exist, there is no legal way to have year-round foreign workers. “We know [undocumented immigrants] are working, they’re not sitting at home,” he said. “The slowing in immigration that’s broadly anticipated will probably show up in tighter labor markets for lower-skilled workers,” he said in an interview.

Asked in August whether he would ever serve in Trump’s cabinet, Kennedy said, “No.” but weeks later, he ended his campaign and endorsed Trump. Kennedy has since refrained from any public criticism of Trump, aligning himself with the former president on issues like government censorship and public health. Trump, left, greets Robert F. Kennedy Jr., at a campaign rally in Glendale, Arizona, on August 23. “And you can see that every statement that Donald Trump makes is fear-based,” Kennedy said on his radio show in December 2016. “And, you know, he’s not like Hitler,” Kennedy said.

HONG KONG — Former Hong Kong publisher Jimmy Lai began testifying Wednesday in his landmark national security trial that is widely seen as a measure of press freedom and judicial independence in the Chinese territory. He is fighting charges of colluding with foreign forces to endanger national security and conspiring with others to issue seditious publications. Lai, 76, faces up to life in prison if convicted under a national security law imposed by Beijing. But critics say that promise has become threadbare under the rubric of maintaining national security. It added that judges remain independent and partial when handling national security cases.

CNN —Taylor Sheridan’s hit western series “Yellowstone” may soon be coming to an end, but the producer’s latest offering “Landman” might just be the show to fill that void. “Landman” stars Billy Bob Thornton and chronicles the gritty tale of the dangerous oil business in the boomtowns of West Texas. It is based on the “Boomtown” podcast, which covered the Permian Basin’s historic oil boom. Ali Larter plays Angela Norris, Tommy’s wife and Demi Moore plays Hamm’s wife Cami. However, the post-election environment is hitting different this time around for many small business owners, such as Barrel-Art’s Michael Prieto, and leaving them wondering what comes next. CNN —US wholesale inflation picked up more than expected in October, indicating that some price pressures persist at the producer level. Still, one potential favorable sign for inflation-weary consumers: Wholesale food prices dropped 0.2% for the month. FactSet consensus forecasts called for a 0.2% monthly gain and for the annual rate to heat up to 2.3%. Economists projected a 0.2% monthly gain and a 3% annual rate. Thursday’s PPI trajectory mirrored that seen in the latest Consumer Price Index data released Wednesday.

Housing-related inflation accounted for half of the monthly rise, and energy prices were flat after dragging down the overall index for four of the past six months. The Consumer Price Index measures price changes across commonly purchased goods and services. Still, October’s increase was to be expected, due to unfavorable comparisons from a year ago and stubborn housing-related inflation. Consensus estimates were for a 0.2% monthly increase and a 2.6% annual increase in the overall CPI, according to FactSet. A potential ‘inflation shock’ in the wingsAlthough the broader US economy survived the sharpest inflation run-up seen in a generation, Americans’ finances — and their sentiment — were far from unscathed.

CNN —Americans are continuing to pile on debt at record levels — but for many households, those IOUs are completely manageable, according to new data released Wednesday. Balances grew across all major debt categories, with credit cards and auto loans continuing to see the biggest gains. However, by and large, most households have been able to handle that rising debt: Their after-tax income has grown even more, according to the New York Fed. Disposable personal income hit $21.8 trillion in the third quarter, bringing the total debt balance to income ratio to 82%. And, for 18 months running, that pay growth has outpaced inflation, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data released Wednesday.

New York CNN —Chris Wallace, the veteran journalist who has anchored weekly programs on CNN and the Max streaming service, is leaving the network, he announced Monday. “Chris Wallace is one of the most respected political journalists in the news business with a unique track record across radio, print, broadcast television, cable television and streaming,” Thompson said. In this case, Wallace told The Daily Beast that he decided to leave CNN to explore new platforms like streaming or podcasting. At the time, Wallace accepted a new role as the anchor of “Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace?” on CNN+, a streaming video product that launched in early 2022, but was shuttered weeks later when CNN’s parent company changed hands. Wallace’s talk show continued on the Max streaming service, and last year he added an eponymous Saturday morning panel discussion show.

Anna Kendrick had already appeared in two hit "Twilight" films before being cast alongside George Clooney in 2009's "Up In The Air", but she still was a ball of nerves during her first day on set. The actress appeared on "Who's Talking to Chris Wallace" last week while promoting her directorial debut "Woman of the Hour" and credited Clooney for going out of his way to her feel at ease. Kendrick, who was just 23 during production of the film, said that Clooney did his best to help her feel like he was just another actor on set with her. "To other people he is kind of capital G, George, you know?" "And he works really hard to make you forget that and feel comfortable."

contestant is addressing the "problematic" clue given on the Oct. 28 episode of the show that host Ken Jennings apologized to her for. From the category "Complete the Rhyming Phrase," it read, "Men seldom make passes at..." To which the correct answer was, "Girls who wear glasses." Jennings read the clue with a slightly awkward tone, then immediately apologized to Heather after it was answered. "Yeah, a little problematic," he said. "I think it made everybody in the audience and on stage, and Ken Jennings too, a little uncomfortable," Ryan told the paper.

A statue of an eagle is seen on the Federal Reserve building on September 17 in Washington, DC. One of those meetings takes place in November and, coincidentally, kicked off the Wednesday directly right after Election Day. As Fed Chair Jerome Powell has previously vowed, officials don’t take the political calendar into consideration when they make interest rate decisions. Still, this meeting’s proximity to Election Day has put the Fed in an uncomfortable position — whether Powell and his colleagues want to admit it or not. Already, officials have been scrutinized for their decision to begin lowering rates at its last meeting before the election, which took place in September.

Bloomberg | Bloomberg | Getty ImagesRegardless of the outcome of the U.S. presidential election, there could be some clear winners for exchange-traded funds, or ETFs, experts say. Potential winners and losersIn the months ahead, some ETFs or funds could outperform depending on the election outlook. Exchange-traded funds have steadily gained popularity among investors, with ETF assets crossing the $10 trillion mark in September — a trend experts say is largely due to advantages like lower tax bills and fees relative to mutual funds. Exchange-traded funds are generally known for passive strategies, but there has also been a surge in actively managed ETFs, with the goal of beating the performance of broader markets. watch nowHowever, most financial advisors caution against making hasty changes to your investment portfolio based on the outcome of this election.

Expect the unexpected in the jobs report

In any other month, the finishing touch would be a clean reading on the labor market from the official jobs report. However, a common thread among economists is that the strikes and hurricanes could take a 100,000-job bite out of the October jobs report. The last time there were back-to-back major hurricanes — Harvey and Irma in 2017 — the forecasts for the following month’s jobs report were for a loss of 33,000 positions. And each contribute to two of the biggest numbers in the monthly jobs report. A key date to keep in mind for the jobs report is October 12, as it anchors the “reference period” for both surveys.
