Reuters —A prominent Ugandan opposition politician was kidnapped during a book launch in Kenya over the weekend, transferred to Uganda and is being held at a military jail in Kampala, his wife said on Wednesday. “I request the (government) of Uganda to release my husband Dr Kizza Besigye from where he is being held immediately,” said his wife Winnie Byanyima. A spokesman for the Ugandan military could not be immediately reached for comment. “As police, we don’t have him, so we can’t make any comment,” Ugandan police spokesman Kituuma Rusoke told Reuters. Senate Democrats who pulled off victories even as President-elect Donald Trump won their states believe the Democratic Party can learn some lessons from their races as it grapples with losing control of Washington. Democrats still lost the Senate majority despite those victories, with Republicans flipping seats in Montana, Ohio and West Virginia. Both the exit polls and VoteCast showed her winning 57% of white women with at least a four-year college degree. Solid majorities of Black, Latina and college-educated White women described Trump in the exit poll as “too extreme,” as did over two-fifths of the White women without a college degree. But among the White women without a college degree who described Trump as “too extreme,” almost 1 in 5 voted for him anyway. Though many women are expressing unease about mass deportation, Trump’s claim that immigrants are driving crime may provide him considerable leeway to pursue his agenda, particularly among the blue-collar White women who proved most receptive to that argument.

New York CNN —Young American adults are increasingly getting their news from social media influencers, a majority of whom are men and lean to the right, according to a new study from the Pew Research Center. On Facebook, there were three times as many explicitly conservative news influencers (39% to 13%), and on Instagram conservatives outnumbered liberals, 30-25%. “Many Republicans have long believed that social media sites censor conservative viewpoints. Social media influencers differ from trained journalists in how they report facts, often weaving their own views into current events or presenting opinions as reportable facts. Amid a presidential loss and hand-wringing over the wreckage, congressional gains for Democrats in New York state are one of the small bright spots shining out from the party’s bleak results. The Democratic Party lost five competitive House races in this blue state two years ago — the exact margin by which they lost the House majority. One key ingredient isn’t available everywhere: Democrats redrew the state political maps early this year, though that move gave some Democrats heartburn at the time. In the aftermath of 2022, three top New York Democrats — Gov. Internal polling from the House GOP campaign arm across the seven competitive House districts showed Harris trailing Biden’s margins – and even giving Trump an edge.

Biden in 2020 did not gain ground across the country in as large a percentage of counties as Trump did in 2024. In 2020, Biden won Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, the three former “blue wall” states that decided the election, by a combined 257,029 votes. “In 2020, Biden picks up everywhere. In 2020, Biden won only a little more than one-sixth of the nation’s counties, but the places he captured generated over 70% of the nation’s total economic output. The highest-output counties Trump flipped were almost entirely in the Sun Belt: from Hillsborough (Tampa) and Tarrant (Fort Worth) to Maricopa (Phoenix).

A notable portion of Silicon Valley's electorate has steadily shifted toward Donald Trump. In Santa Clara, San Mateo and San Francisco counties, Trump's voteshare increased by several points. But with more than 76% of the votes counted in San Francisco, Santa Clara, and San Mateo counties as of Tuesday, a trend is emerging. These numbers show that Trump and Republicans are still a long way off from gaining any real majorities in Silicon Valley. Elon Musk spent $44 billion to buy Twitter, now known as X, and at least $130 million to help get Donald Trump elected president. Since Trump’s victory last week, Musk is about $70 billion richer on paper. For Musk, getting Trump back into the White House became another full-time job. After the election last week, Musk briefly joined Trump’s phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, NBC News reported. Musk owns 411.06 million Tesla shares, as of the latest filings, and about 304 million performance-based options.

Across the country Tuesday, counties moved toward Trump by a median of 3.1 percentage points compared to the 2020 election. But in the top 10% of counties ranked most difficult for buying a home, the median shift was 4.5 percentage points. In Passaic County, New Jersey, with a population of more than 500,000, voters flipped for Trump by nearly 19 percentage points. Nearby in Pennsylvania, Northampton County — which narrowly tipped red with a shift of 3 percentage points — has a similar story. But not all high-challenge housing counties swung toward Trump.

President-elect Donald Trump has won Arizona, NBC News projects, putting its 11 electoral votes in his column after he narrowly lost the state to President Joe Biden in 2020. A fast-growing Latino population and a revolt against Trump among some old-line Republicans put the once-red state into battleground territory. And Biden’s 2020 win in Arizona was just the second time in 28 years that Arizona’s electoral votes went to the Democratic presidential nominee. Arizona was the second-closest state in the country in the 2020 presidential race, with Biden beating Trump by just 0.3 percentage points (10,457 votes). And the state was a good fit for the two issues at the center of Trump’s campaign: the economy and immigration.
