While employees may like this sentiment of nurturing internal talent, employers have veered in the opposite direction in recent years. Mack Trucks, founded in Brooklyn, New York, in 1900, is renowned for its 18-wheelers, diesel-powered big rigs with a trademark bulldog mounted on the hood. Purchase-making decisions are distinct for consumer and commercial markets, a difference reflected in last year's EV sales results within both sectors and outlooks for future growth. EV sales increased year over year by 40% in the fourth quarter, yet were down from 49% in the third quarter. Cox expects this year's EV sales to reach 1.5 million, about 36% higher than last year. Eighty EV truck deployments were cataloged in 2020, and those deployments jumped to 1,948 in 2022.

There are more than four million electric vehicles on American roads, but fewer than 1,000 of them are heavy-duty trucks. On Tuesday, the three largest truck makers plan to announce a push to remedy that deficit by calling on governments and utilities to help them build many more places to charge big rigs. Daimler Truck, which owns Freightliner; Navistar, which is controlled by Volkswagen; and Volvo Trucks have formed an association to push for chargers, improvements to the electricity grid and other measures they say are needed to promote battery- or hydrogen-powered trucks. The new organization, Powering America’s Commercial Transportation, will be based in Washington and also be open to suppliers, nonprofit organizations and other groups. The Inflation Reduction Act, which Democrats passed in 2022, provides $1 billion for electric trucks, including tax credits of up to $40,000 for companies that buy them, as well as subsidies for charging infrastructure.

Prefer BYD to Tesla Jones prefers Tesla's Chinese EV rival BYD , which he says is his top EV pick. "I haven't seen anything that would suggest to me that they don't have sales momentum, business momentum, new model release momentum, and indeed, now export momentum," Jones said. Two other EV alternatives Another EV company that Jones likes is Volvo Trucks, a unit under Swedish automaker Volvo . "The reason we like [electric] trucks is that it's the area where Western manufacturers are still pretty strong," he said. Volvo has a "very good" truck business, he said, adding: "In particular, they're making a good transition in terms of electric trucks.

DETROIT (AP) — Union workers at Mack Trucks have voted down a tentative five-year contract agreement reached with the company and plan to strike at 7 a.m. Monday, the United Auto Workers union says. Union President Shawn Fain said in a letter to Mack parent company Volvo Trucks that 73% of workers voted against the deal in results counted on Sunday. Union leaders had reached a tentative agreement on the deal on Oct. 1. Fain wrote that UAW members and workers across the country are seeking their fair share in wages and benefits. Mack Trucks President Stephen Roy said in a statement Sunday night that the company is “surprised and disappointed” that the union chose to strike.

Volvo wins record order for electric trucks from Holcim

OSLO, May 22 (Reuters) - Volvo Trucks (VOLVb.ST) said on Monday it has signed a letter of intent to sell 1,000 electric trucks to Swiss building solutions provider Holcim (HOLN.S) for delivery in the next seven years. "The deal is the largest commercial order to date for Volvo electric trucks," Volvo said in a statement. The first 130 trucks will be delivered during the fourth quarter of 2023 and throughout 2024 to markets including France, Germany, Switzerland and Britain, among others. By replacing 1,000 diesel trucks with electric versions using green electricity could save up to 50,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions every year, Volvo said. In Sept. 2022, it said it would begin testing fuel cell electric trucks in what it called "commercial traffic" from 2025. It's therefore no surprise that alongside hydrogen, battery electric vehicles are also being considered for trucking. Other companies like Scania and DAF are also operating in the battery electric space. "Which zero-emission technology out of battery electric and hydrogen will prevail in the long-haul segment is less certain," T&E adds. Within the EU, for example, efforts are being made to create the conditions that would enable hydrogen trucks to travel long distances.

OSLO, March 16 (Reuters) - Volvo Group (VOLVb.ST) will restructure its European bus-making operation in a bid to restore it to profitability, divesting from a Polish plant and axing 1,600 jobs, the Swedish company said on Thursday. Volvo Buses will change its business model in Europe to focus on chassis production while cooperating with external companies for the bodybuilding, in line with a strategy pursued in other markets, it said. "The decision to end the production of complete buses and coaches will impact approximately 1,600 positions at Volvo Buses, whereof around 1,500 are based in Wroclaw," the group said in a statement. Volvo will still have more than 2,100 employees in Poland working at Volvo Trucks, Volvo Construction Equipment and group support functions, the company added. REUTERS/Andrew Kelly/File PhotoJan 26 (Reuters) - Swedish truck maker AB Volvo (VOLVb.ST) reported a slightly smaller rise than expected in fourth-quarter core profit on Thursday and proposed an extra dividend but warned that its supply chain struggles are set to linger. Adjusted operating profit at Volvo, a rival of German brands such as Daimler Trucks (DTGGe.DE), rose to 12.2 billion Swedish crowns ($1.19 billion) from 10.1 billion crowns a year earlier and an average forecast of 12.5 billion crowns from analysts in a Refinitiv poll. Chief Executive Martin Lundstedt said the business continued to be affected by a volatile supply chain for components as well as its supplier base being under financial pressure from high energy prices and input costs. The world's second-biggest truck manufacturer proposed an ordinary annual dividend of 7.00 crowns per share and a extra dividend of the same amount.

Rising fuel costs, the possibility of stricter emissions regulations to come, and questions about battery supplies, have all increased the appeal of zero-emission fuel cells. Volvo TrucksVolvo GroupCEO: Martin LundstedtMarket Cap: $32.97 billionHQ: Gothenburg, SwedenVolvo Trucks said in June 2022 it had begun testing hydrogen fuel-cell trucks. In the latter case, Plug Power has provided Amazon with more than 15,000 fuel cells to replace the batteries in its warehouse forklifts since 2016. Plug just signed a new deal to provide the behemoth with the liquid hydrogen necessary to run its fuel-cell vehicles starting in 2025. As part of a deal with Weichai group, Ballard is building fuel cells in China to power fuel-cell vehicles in that market.
