Earnings drove the stock market higher — can they do it again in the week ahead? But he acknowledged that timing is key because our portfolio discipline mandates that we consider lightening up our stock exposure in an overbought market. In fact, AMD was our worst-performing stock for the entire week, losing more than 7% following the prior week's 1.8% slide. Energy was the worst sector of the week for the market as oil prices sank. In the week ahead, housing numbers are the main draw on the economic front.

If you had a spare $1 million to invest right now, what should you buy? He would allocate roughly 60% into stocks this way: 15% each to U.S. large-cap growth stocks and U.S. large-cap value stocks; 4% to small-caps; and 8% to mid-caps. "We really believe in style diversification and feel that remaining diversified with value and growth stocks remains prudent," Benson said. With a million dollars to invest, it would be "reasonable" for investors to put their money in both small- and mid-cap stocks now, he said. The average amount of money that his clients invest is $1.3 million, and his firm manages over $1.2 billion.

Oct 16 (Reuters) - Tourmaline Oil (TOU.TO) on Monday agreed to buy rival Bonavista Energy for C$1.45 billion ($1.06 billion) in cash and stock, strengthening its position in Western Canada's Deep Basin. The acquisition is expected to help Tourmaline, already the largest Deep Basin producer, exit 2023 with production of more than 600,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day. The offer consists of C$725 million in Tourmaline common shares and C$725 million in cash. Bonavista, a major oil and gas producer, delisted from the Toronto Stock Exchange in 2020 as part of a recapitalization plan. In September, Canadian natural gas firm Peyto Exploration & Development (PEY.TO) agreed to buy Spanish energy company Repsol's (REP.MC) Deep Basin assets for $468 million.

And hedge fund manager David Neuhauser of Livermore Partners told CNBC's " Street Signs Asia " that the "best asset class" is oil stocks. Typically, in a recession, oil prices could dive to $50 a barrel, he said. Stocks to buy Neuhauser said Livermore owns small-cap energy stocks Kolibri Global and Vista Energy — because of limited supply and strong returns on capital, as well as low valuations. Still, energy stocks are an option for investors seeking inflation protection, Dietze said. He said energy stocks are "a far superior alternative" to Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities.

LONDON, June 8 (Reuters) - Livista Energy said on Thursday it plans a lithium refinery for electric vehicles (EV) batteries in Germany that should launch production in 2026 and has partnered with French oil and gas services provider Technip Energies (TE.PA) to design the plant. Luxembourg-based Livista said it initially aims to refine 40,000 tonnes of lithium annually at the plant, or enough for batteries for around 850,000 EVs, with the potential to double capacity over time. The European lithium refiner said that recycled lithium from batteries should make up 50% of the plant's capacity by 2030. The EU's plans for battery independence also include recycling battery materials like lithium. As lithium mines and refineries take years to develop, building out European supply will be a lengthy process.

TORONTO, May 8 (Reuters) - Canada's oil and gas producers shut down some production after Alberta was hit by an unprecedented wildfire season, although rain and cooler weather are expected to bring some relief on Monday. Canada is home to the world's third-largest reserves, and most of these are in northern Alberta's vast oil sands. NuVista Energy (NVA.TO) said on Monday it had temporarily shut in about 40,000 boepd as a precaution. In neighboring British Columbia, several communities remained under evacuation orders after heavy rain last week and flood warnings stayed in place. Hedge fund manager David Neuhauser's fund has beaten both the S & P 500 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average so far this year. Energy and gold Neuhauser said small-cap energy stocks are behind the fund's outperformance, naming three: Jadestone Energy , Kolibri Global Energy and Vista Energy . That comes as oil prices rose this week after a surprise OPEC+ oil production cut announced in early April. Livermore owns luxury stocks such as LVMH, Ferrari and clothing retailer Canada Goose Holdings . And I think that's going to prove to be an error," he told CNBC.
