American book-reading habits have been in decline for decades, but you wouldn’t know it from sitting in on a young-adult literature class held last winter at Brigham Young University.
The professor, Chris Crowe, arrived to the classroom with a box full of books.
When he announced they were free for the taking, some two dozen students rushed to the table.
There were reminders that the class was taking place at “the Lord’s university,” as B.Y.U.
And the discussion, which that day focused on “Make Lemonade,” Virginia Euwer Wolff’s verse novel about two teenagers living in poverty, came to a familiar head.
