Rome CNN —Rome’s baroque Trevi Fountain opened Saturday morning with selfie-takers lining a newly installed metal walkway, as workers start the painstaking process of carefully cleaning the 18th-century masterpiece. But a warning to those visiting the attraction because tossing a coin into the fountain, a long-standing tradition, is now banned. The $330,000 cleaning and restoration project will last until December, Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri told CNN in an interview Saturday morning. He said that will also make the experience better for tourists, many of whom seem happy to pay the price. The mayor has promised that the Trevi Fountain will be ready in just five weeks this time.

Mauad and her team took samples of olfactory bulb tissue from 15 cadavers of people who died between the ages of 33 and 100. The presence of microplastics in the olfactory bulb doesn’t automatically mean there are microplastics elsewhere in the brain, such as regions related to cognition.

New York CNN —Norfolk Southern CEO Alan Shaw was fired for cause by the railroad’s board for “engaging in a consensual relationship with the company’s chief legal officer,” who was also terminated, the railroad announced Wednesday evening. Shaw had been CEO of one of the nation’s four largest freight railroads for just over two years. And he received praise from some past critics of the railroads for steps he took after the February 2023 derailment in East Palestine to improve railroad safety. Still, Norfolk’s actions related to the derailment received harsh criticism from Jennifer Homendy, chair of the National Transportation Safety Board, which investigated the accident. London CNN —Ed Sheeran surprised fans at a supermarket outside of London on Tuesday, where he dished out pizza and signed his autograph for fans – in hot sauce. Sheeran announced the event, which was being held to promote his hot sauce line, “Tingly Ted’s,” on his Instagram story. Sheeran signed his autograph for fans using the sauce. A “lifelong ketchup and hot sauce obsessive,” according to the Tingly Ted’s website, Sheeran has the Heinz tomato ketchup label tattooed on his arm. He created the hot sauce to realize his dream of making “the ketchup of hot sauces,” it said.
