As the Super Heavy booster made its way back to a pinpoint landing, an earsplitting sonic boom rang out. Potential risksResearchers and regulators are working to assess further what risks these sonic booms may present to the surrounding area, Gee said. More data about the sonic booms — and how weather patterns might affect their impact — is desperately needed, he said. Spacex/UPI/ShutterstockSpaceX has indicated it hopes sonic booms will be associated with those ambitious goals in the public consciousness. “Sonic booms announce the return of rockets and spacecraft built to be reused,” a blog post from the company reads.

Opinion TheKillings ofYoungMothersIt’s an hour before sunrise in New Orleans, and Markitha Sinegal is fighting with her boyfriend again. In Louisiana, where Markitha Sinegal lived, homicide is the second leading cause of death for pregnant and postpartum women. Homicide deaths are usually omitted from maternal mortality statistics because they aren’t considered sufficiently related to the pregnancy itself. But homicide isn’t a rare anomaly for pregnant and postpartum women — it’s one of their leading causes of death. Domestic violence is rooted in power and control, and pregnancy is a tether that can shift a relationship’s dynamic.

PepsiCo said Tuesday that it's buying Mexican-American food company Siete Foods for $1.2 billion, marking the company's first food acquisition in roughly five years. Like many food companies, Pepsi has been trying to shift its portfolio to include healthier options in recent years, usually through acquisitions. Soon that will also include Siete. In August, M&M's owner Mars announced it would buy Pringles parent Kellanova in a deal valued at nearly $36 billion. This March, Campbell Soup completed its $2.7 billion acquisition of Rao's pasta sauce maker Sovos Brand.

WHY WE’RE HEREWe’re exploring how America defines itself one place at a time. In the border city of Alamo, Texas, colorful dancers have turned a local flea market into a global internet sensation. June 15, 2024The punishing heat of late spring does nothing to keep the crowds from descending on La Pulga de Alamo, one of the flea markets that are a center of both commerce and culture in the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas. For as long as anyone can remember, pulgas — Spanish for fleas — have been part of the fabric of El Valle, as the area is known to the large Spanish-speaking population in this part of Texas, a slice of Mexico just north of the border. This is never more true than on the weekend, when the market in Alamo transforms from a shopping mecca into a one-of-a-kind dance hall whose fame has spread across the country and beyond.

Jairo Lerma and several of his relatives placed a wooden cross in the dry grass along a Texas highway where his parents, on their way from Georgia to Mexico, died suddenly in a fiery crash with an oncoming car that was carrying migrants and fleeing a sheriff’s deputy. Shortly before the crash on Nov. 8, his mother, Isabel, had texted to say that she and her husband, José Carlos, a retired carpet factory worker from Dalton, Ga., would soon be at the border. Instead they died near a bend in the road some 60 miles short, along with five migrants and the 21-year-old driver of the other car. “I blame the sheriff’s department because they were chasing at a really high speed in a location that was really dangerous,” Mr. Lerma said. “This could have been avoided.”In recent years, police departments across the United States have been reassessing when and how to pursue fleeing suspects, adopting policies to curtail the number of dangerous high-speed chases.

Opinion | How to Reduce the High Rates of Maternal Mortality
  + stars: | 2023-07-23 | by ( ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
To the Editor:Re “More Mothers Are Dying, and It’s Preventable,” by Dr. Veronica Gillispie-Bell (Opinion guest essay, July 17):There are other ways to address the high maternal mortality and morbidity rates. Improve abortion access at any gestational age when maternal life is at risk. Educate high-risk women of all ages on long-term, reversible contraception (especially IUDs). Make it easier to credential or re-credential older, retired professionals (physicians, nurse midwives) across state lines to assist with the shortage of medical practitioners. Nutrition or health classes are often part of school curriculums; educate, screen and treat at younger ages for hypertension and other medical conditions.

The Alliance for Innovation on Maternal Health, or AIM, is a quality improvement initiative designed to put in place and support best practices to reduce maternal morbidity and mortality. Maternal outcomes are not determined by health care alone. What we call social determinants of health — where we live, work and play — also affect health outcomes. When we think about maternal mortality, we should also look to economic stability, education access, health care access, neighborhood and the built environment and community. There is a biased belief that Black women are overly loud and demanding and that we can take more pain than our white counterparts.

Many readers consider this the best of Amis’s early novels. He’s a lout, he’s a slob, he’s a mess — and he is enormously fine company on the page. “The book’s dash and heft and twang serve a deeper energy," our reviewer, Veronica Geng, wrote. Our reviewer, Bette Pesetsky, called “London Fields” “a picaresque novel rich in its effects,” a “virtuoso depiction of a wild and lustful society. Friendly, readers learn, is the latest of the man’s pseudonyms: Years earlier, he was a Nazi doctor who escaped Europe for the United States.
CNN and the GVA define a mass shooting as a shooting that injures or kills four or more people, not including the shooter. They argue that more firearms and higher gun ownership increases public safety – a stance that continues to be at odds with gun violence experts and data. The area around the Robb Elementary School signs has become a memorial dedicated to the victims of the May 24 mass shooting. Mass shootings are just a piece of that, and the strategies that we’re laying out will impact mass shootings. They’ll also impact a lot of other types of gun violence and that’s absolutely critical to saving lives,” Horwitz said.

BROWNSVILLE, Texas—Some 1,000 trucks a day arrive from Mexico at a border checkpoint here near the southern tip of Texas. Their first stop is a white-and-yellow painted metal portal where energy beamed at the trucks produces X-ray images to try to spot fentanyl and other contraband. Across the southern border, most U.S.-bound trucks and nearly all passenger vehicles are generally scanned selectively if they are pulled aside. Mexican cartels have long profited from these odds while smuggling fentanyl and other narcotics. Their illicit trade propelled the U.S. to a record of nearly 107,000 fatal overdoses in 2021, the most recent year of full data.

The Year in Pictures 2022

Every year, starting in early fall, photo editors at The New York Times begin sifting through the year’s work in an effort to pick out the most startling, most moving, most memorable pictures. But 2022 undoubtedly belongs to the war in Ukraine, a conflict now settling into a worryingly predictable rhythm. Erin Schaff/The New York Times “When you’re standing on the ground, you can’t visualize the scope of the destruction. Jim Huylebroek for The New York Times Kyiv, Ukraine, Feb. 25. We see the same images over and over, and it’s really hard to make anything different.” Kyiv, Ukraine, Feb 26.
A Massachusetts man who was suspected of fatally stabbing a woman has died after telling authorities he ingested battery acid, the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office said Thursday. Joao Correia, 56, was taken into custody Wednesday after the woman was found stabbed to death in her driveway in Brockton around 1 p.m., the district attorney’s office said. When police found Correia in an apartment, he “told investigators that he had ingested battery acid and suffered a medical episode,” the office said in a statement. Her nephew said Goncalves was a mother of two and grandmother of a 2-year-old child, NBC Boston reported. Brockton is a city of around 105,000 residents around 20 miles south of downtown Boston.

[1/2] Starship prototypes are pictured at the SpaceX South Texas launch site in Brownsville, Texas, U.S., May 22, 2022. Billionaire Elon Musk's SpaceX has sought for years to send its towering next-generation rocket system into orbit from the company's private launch facilities in Texas, where it has only launched prototypes of Starship's upper half some 6 miles (10 km) high to demonstrate landing attempts. The December mission will test the entire system for the first time, involving the company's 230-foot (70-meter) Super Heavy booster to lift the 160-foot (50-meter) Starship spacecraft into orbit. NASA in 2021 picked SpaceX's Starship to land humans on the moon around 2025 for the first time since 1972. That mission, under a roughly $3 billion contract, requires several spaceflight tests in advance that could delay the 2025 moon landing mission.
