Europe's startup ecosystem has been battered this year but climate tech founders have managed to avoid the brunt of the immense downturn so far. PwC's global analysis of the sector also points to climate tech outperforming the norm, accounting for a tenth of private market investments in 2023. Venture capital investment into European startups more broadly is primed to slump by around 46% to 58.1 billion euros in 2023. These obligations have helped make climate tech startups "catnip to investors," Sustainable Ventures' Stuart Ferguson said. Last year, European companies like electric vehicle manufacturer Polestar and batter-maker Northvolt raised 1.6 billion euros and 1 billion euros respectively.

PARIS, Sept 6 (Reuters) - Verkor should complete the first tranche of fundraising for its future battery gigafactory in Dunkirk, France, in the coming weeks, co-founder and chief customer officer Philippe Chain told Reuters. The Grenoble-based startup's gigafactory is one of four electric vehicle battery factories planned in northern France. Verkor has already raised around 350 million euros, mainly for a new innovation centre, a pilot production line already in operation and a "battery school" to train future employees. Construction of the gigafactory has begun and it will have an initial annual production capacity of 16 gigawatt hours (GWh) - including 12 for Renault (RENA.PA), which owns more than 20% of Verkor. Taiwan's ProLogium also plans a gigafactory in Dunkirk with a capacity of 30 GWh in 2030.

It aims to start annual production at a battery anode plant in Mauritius in 2024 at 3,600 metric tons. Volkswagen (VOWG_p.DE) plans to build six battery factories in Europe totalling 240 gigawatt (GWh) of capacity by 2030. Production at its first battery plant, "SalzGiga", in Salzgitter in the Lower Saxony region will start in 2025. Slovakian battery manufacturer InoBat said last October it had signed a declaration of intent with the Spanish government to set up an EV battery factory in central Spain's city Valladolid, expected to cost 3 billion euros. POLANDLG Chem EV battery in Wroclaw started production in the second half of 2017, with a capacity of 100,000 batteries per year.

Renault strikes battery deal with Verkor for premium EVs

PARIS, April 13 (Reuters) - Renault (RENA.PA) on Thursday announced a long-term commercial partnership with French start-up Verkor for the supply of electric batteries with an overall capacity of 12 GWh per year, including for Renault's future compact Alpine model. Under the new deal, Verkor - in which Renault started to invest in 2021 - will produce batteries for its premium Renault and Alpine models in a plant in Dunkirk, northern France. The first car using the Verkor batteries will be the Alpine C-Crossover GT, which Renault plans to start building in 2025. Asian battery producer Envision AESC will also provide batteries to the group, used in smaller and less powerful vehicles from another factory located in Douai, close to Dunkirk. It wants 3.8 billion pounds ($4.4 billion) to build a gigafactory in northern England but its plans are hanging by a thread as it struggles to lure enough investment. French battery startup Verkor, for example, announced on Wednesday that it had raised 250 million euros ($249 million) to fund a megafactory. The European Battery Alliance (EBA) acknowledges Asian firms, and Chinese companies in particular, are likely to increase their market share in the coming years, helped by their track record and offtake agreements. "Even if we have the production in Europe, it doesn't mean we have the know-how or the control," she said. The EU has approved 6.1 billion euros since 2019 in funding by member states for battery research and innovation while Britain has a 1 billion pound fund to support investments in EV supply chains.
LONDON, Nov 2 (Reuters) - French battery startup Verkor has raised 250 million euros ($248 million) from investors to fund a battery "megafactory" on its way to building a much larger plant to produce batteries for its customer Renault (RENA.PA), the company said on Wednesday. Verkor, which is based in Grenoble, said investors in the funding round included French bank Societe Generale (SOGN.PA), German industrial company Siemens (SIEGn.DE) and the European Investment Bank, which put in 49 million euros. The funding round comes after the company raised 100 million euros from investors in 2021. Verkor said that so far the company has been making several batteries a day in its lab in Grenoble. As well as perfecting its battery chemistry, the megafactory will help Verkor master production at scale and train people to eventually run the Dunkirk gigafactory, Lemaignan said.
