Phone companies maintain records like which phone numbers participated in calls and when those calls happened and potentially the locations of the cell towers their phones connected to. Alan Butler, the executive director and president of the nonprofit Electronic Privacy Information Center, said having one’s phone metadata exposed is a clear violation of privacy. The hacking campaign accessed the metadata of more than a million people, an industry source briefed on the matter said. While some consider phone metadata to be less sensitive than the contents of communications, it can still provide enormous value to intelligence services. That would not typically fall to CISA or the FBI,” the FBI official said.

“We are aware of an issue impacting service for some customers,” a Verizon spokesperson told CNN Monday. Complaints to Verizon’s verified account on X show that customers have been frustrated by a lack of cell service and an inability to connect to the network. Many Verizon iPhone customers complained that their phones had been stuck in “SOS” mode Monday morning, allowing only emergency calls via satellite. Although relatively infrequent, cell service disruptions have caused some widespread headaches this year. The network went down again for a few hours in June and August.

New York CNN —Monday is the last day for some Verizon customers to apply for a refund as part of a $100 million settlement from a class-action lawsuit. The payout is at least $15 and might be more depending on how long the customer used Verizon and the number of customers who file a claim. A claim must be filed to receive the payout and only customers with postpaid wireless accounts or data plans from January 1, 2016, to November 8, 2023, are eligible. So-called “junk fees” are not only derided by consumers but have also attracted the ire of the Biden administration. Last October, the Federal Trade Commission unveiled a proposed rule that would ban businesses from charging hidden or misleading fees and require companies to show full prices upfront.

After days of speculation and online sleuthing by fans — just another week, in other words — Beyoncé used her appearance in a Super Bowl commercial on Sunday to announce that she would soon be releasing new music. In a Verizon ad that ran shortly after halftime, Beyoncé joked with the comedian Tony Hale about doing something that would “break the internet” (i.e. She ran through a few riffs, like “Beyonc-A.I.,” a Barbie-like “Bar-bey” and a presidential “BOTUS.”Then she said, “Drop the new music,” before the commercial ended. Soon after, Beyoncé’s website updated with the announcement that a new album, identified as “Act II,” would be released on March 29. It appeared to be the second part of Beyoncé’s “Renaissance” album project, and perhaps one with a country-rock theme, given the sound and look of two new songs, “Texas Hold ’Em” and “16 Carriages,” that quickly appeared online.

Many cell towers have backup power generators but they have limited capacity to keep towers running. Cell service is down. Why cell phone service went downAlthough strong winds can sometimes threaten cell towers, most are strong enough to handle the worst that even a Category 5 hurricane can bring. “When the fires get too close to cell sites, they will obviously burn equipment, antennas, and feedlines,” said Glenn O’Donnell, VP of research at market research firm Forrester. Cell towers have backup technology built in, but this is typically done through optical fiber cables or microwave (wireless) links, according to Dimitris Mavrakis, senior researcher at ABI Research.

One such cable hangs bordering a playground in Wappingers Falls, New York, and lead in nearby soil measured more than 1,000 parts per million, the Journal reported. AT&T shares earlier this week hit a three-decade low following a flurry of downgrades from analysts on concerns that the potential of toxic lead cables could create long-term headwinds for the companies in question. Shares of Verizon, also mentioned in the Journal’s investigation, fell to their lowest closing level since 2010 on Monday. Shares of telecom companies pared back their losses Wednesday, buoyed by a broader market rally fueled by strong second-quarter earnings reports. Raymond James analysts wrote in a note Wednesday that they estimate AT&T could spend between $264 million and $1.2 billion to remove lead-covered cables.

Verizon’s consumer unit has more than 90 million postpaid devices connecting to its network. Verizon Communications Inc. is raising prices on some older cellphone plans, adding $2 per phone monthly fees for customers who don’t switch to the company’s latest offerings. The company began notifying affected customers of the rate increase last week, and a spokesman said the higher price reflects “the added cost of maintaining these legacy plans.” The company, whose consumer unit has more than 90 million postpaid devices connecting to its network, declined to say how many customers are affected.
T-Mobile’s solid performance on Wall Street was one big reason why CEO Mike Sievert is the CNN Business pick for CEO of the Year. CNN Business spoke to Sievert about how T-Mobile has continued to perform well in a super competitive business. T-Mobile CEO Mike Sievert talks to employees at a 2022 company event. CEO Hans Vestberg said he would focus on more consistency between Verizon’s network product and its operational results. Verizon Communications Inc. replaced consumer unit chief Manon Brouillette after a little less than a year in the role, the latest sign of the wireless company’s struggle to appeal to nonbusiness clients. The cellphone carrier said Monday that Chief Executive Hans Vestberg , 57, would assume the immediate responsibilities of Ms. Brouillette, 54. Mr. Vestberg said in a statement that he would focus “on driving a closer consistency between the top quality network product we’re bringing to market and the operational results we’re producing.”

Verizon attributed the drop in its wireless retail postpaid connections to higher customer churn after it instituted monthly rate increases over the summer. Verizon Communications said its earnings slipped by nearly a fourth in the quarter as retail customers balked at its recent price increases. The telecommunications giant said Friday that its consumer business lost 189,000 wireless retail postpaid connections, attributing the drop to higher customer churn that followed monthly rate increases it instituted over the summer.
And we still do.”A recent study of small business owners by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce found that inflation and supply chain issues are the top challenges entrepreneurs face today. One in three small business owners call inflation their highest concern and 67% of them have raised prices in response to inflation. “The Paycheck Protection Program continues to be disadvantageous to smaller businesses, businesses owned by people of color, and businesses without employees. According to NBC Bay Area, searches for “Black-owned businesses near me” peaked in June 2020, with companies like Yelp making it easier for people to find and support Black-owned businesses, per data from Google. She said that during the height of the social justice movement, corporations and financial institutions pledged to support Black-owned businesses.
