Disney and DirecTV are not likely to reach a deal in time for "Monday Night Football" according to people familiar with the matter. As a result of the fight, DirecTV customers were unable to see the U.S. Open and the first full weekend of the college football season. DirecTV alerted customers on Friday to competitor alternatives for watching ESPN and also said it would provide a $30 credit to customers. However, Charter and Disney reached a deal hours ahead of "Monday Night Football" that allowed customers to tune in that night. The dispute between DirecTV and Disney has led to mudslinging between the two companies reminiscent of most carriage fights.

Pay-TV distributors — that's conventional cable guys like Comcast, satellite-TV outfits like DirecTV, and digital alternatives like YouTube TV — lost 1.6 million subscribers in the second quarter of 2024, according to analysts at MoffettNathanson. But not as bad as other Q2s, like in 2023, when the industry lost 1.7 million subscribers, or in 2022, when it lost 1.8 million subs. And in other good news for the TV industry … well, that's about it. That's why YouTube TV lost subscribers for the first time in the first quarter, and added only 50,000 subscribers in the second.

What would you pay for a streaming service that gave you lots — but not all — of the biggest sports programming on TV? Most crucially, it won't include lots of NFL games, since the package doesn't include CBS, which has the national rights to AFC games on Sundays. Take the NFL out of traditional TV and there's almost nothing left at this point. If you wanted a streaming service that had all of the NFL games on traditional TV, you'd need a service like YouTube TV, which currently costs $73 a month. That's partly because the TV companies that are part of the bundle kind of believe that, and partly because they have a delicate relationship with pay TV distributors like Comcast.
