Against Croatia’s Donna Vekić, Zheng produced a stunning display of powerful hitting on the clay of Roland Garros, triumphing 6-2, 6-3 in a hard-fought gold medal match. Upon winning match point, her delight was laid bare. Vekić, already making history as the first Croatian tennis player to reach an Olympic singles final, took longer to settle. “I’m really happy to be here, to have won the gold medal, to represent my country,” she added. “I’m supposed to become better, but after this gold medal, I feel I can finally play tennis a bit more relaxed.”Zheng’s path to the gold medal, not just because of her semifinal victory against bronze medalist Swiatek, has hardly been straightforward.

1 and top seed in the Olympic tennis tournament, lost in the semifinals Thursday to China’s Zheng Qinwen, a massive upset in the women’s singles. Świątek, who is the dominant force on clay in women’s tennis, entered the Paris Olympics as the overwhelming favorite to win gold. “I know that in a regular women’s match, my stamina might have run out after such extended play. Świątek had cruised through the tournament to this point, dropping one set in her previous four matches. 7 took the first set from Świątek, who rallied after that to eventually ease past the then-newcomer to the WTA Tour.

PARIS — Iga Swiatek, the world No. 1, will have to settle for a bronze medal at best in the Olympic tennis tournament after losing to Zheng Qinwen of China. Zheng triumphed 6-2, 7-5, coming back from 0-4 down in the second set after the Pole and four-time French Open champion looked to have started rolling downhill. Even when, at 1-2 down in the first set, she immediately broke Zheng back to love, Swiatek could not sustain the shift in momentum. Swiatek will now face either Donna Vekic of Croatia or Anna Karolina Schmiedlova of Slovakia in the bronze medal match, while Zheng will play the other for Olympic gold.

Roland Garros, Paris CNN —Coco Gauff looked to be cruising against Donna Vekić in her third-round singles match at the Paris Olympics. The most fraught moment of the match came midway through the second set when Gauff was reduced to tears during a heated exchange with chair umpire Jaume Campistol. A line call on Gauff’s baseline was initially deemed out, but Campistol overruled the decision and handed Vekić a crucial break point. The supervisor also came onto the court and the ensuing debate lasted five minutes, with Gauff wiping tears away from her eyes. The ball was flying a little bit, but after that, I got in rhythm and it was pretty good.”The dispute with the umpire in the second set, Gauff later explained, didn’t alter the result of the match.

This meant he judged the ball from Vekic to be in, and chair umpire Jaume Campistol awarded her the point because Gauff’s follow-up shot had gone into the net. Regarding the overruling of line calls, Case 7 is as follows:“If a chair umpire or line umpire calls ‘Out’ and then corrects the call to good, what is the correct decision? “Decision: The chair umpire must decide if the original ‘Out’ call was a hindrance to either player. Video line calls happen throughout top-level tennis. After the match, Vekic said, “It’s a very tricky situation.

PARIS — The top American tennis player Coco Gauff is out of the Olympic women’s singles under controversial circumstances after a 6-7, 2-6 defeat to Croatia’s Donna Vekic on Court Philippe-Chatrier at Roland Garros. Afterward, Gauff, who was the flagbearer for Team USA alongside LeBron James, said that she “felt that they called it before I hit. Play continued with Gauff down a break and she fought back in the next Vekic service game, but Vekic saved multiple break points, and ultimately cruised to an impressive victory by breaking Gauff again in the final game. Down 5-3 in the first set, Vekic broke Gauff at love to turn the match around. “I can’t say I would have won the match if I would have won that point.

CNN —The 2024 Wimbledon women’s singles final is set: Jasmine Paolini will battle Barbora Krejčíková for the right to lift the iconic Venus Rosewater Dish for the first time in either of their careers. Paolini has already made history by becoming the first Italian woman to make the Wimbledon final and is seeking her maiden grand slam title after falling short in the French Open final last month. Paolini recently went on a surprise run to the French Open final, upsetting former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina in the quarterfinals and defeating 17-year-old rising star Mirra Andreeva in the semis. Coming into Wimbledon as the seventh seed this year, Paolini had never won a match on the lawns of SW19. A three-time finalist at the All-England Club, Novotná won the Wimbledon title in 1998 and passed away from cancer in 2017.

CNN —Jasmine Paolini became the first Italian woman in history to reach a Wimbledon final after beating Donna Vekić 2-6 6-4 7-6(8) in an all-time classic. “I was trying to think about what to do on the court point by point and repeating to myself that there is no place better than here where to fight for every ball, every point. But Paolini, who admitted she was “serving really bad” to start the match, soon found her range in the second set. It was a supremely tense affair, with Paolini only breaking Vekić in her final service game of the set. She then reached her first grand slam final at the French Open last month, where she was beaten by Iga Świątek.

LONDON, July 13 (Reuters) - For Marketa Vondrousova the very notion of winning Wimbledon was an impossibility a year ago, but on Saturday she has the chance to add her name to an esteemed list of Czech champions. Not only that, but Prague-based Vondrousova, 24, can become the first unseeded woman to win Wimbledon. I didn't play for almost six months, so it was very tough," Vondrousova told reporters when asked to cast her mind back 12 months. It was really sad," Vondrousova, who made a tentative return to the second-tier ITF Tour last October, said. June 26 (Reuters) - Wimbledon champion and world number three Elena Rybakina pulled out of a warm-up event in Eastbourne on Monday, saying she was still recovering from a virus that forced her to withdraw from the French Open. Moscow-born Kazakh Rybakina made her major breakthrough by winning the title at Wimbledon last year and has steadily gone up the world rankings in 2023. Rybakina lost to Donna Vekic in the round of 16 in Berlin last week. "I am still recovering from the virus I had in Paris and after Roland Garros it was really tough. The 33-year-old Czech, who also beat Vekic en route to victory at the Miami Open this year, earned her 31st career title. The left-hander looked completely at ease on the surface as she captured her sixth title on grass, more than any other active WTA player, in a warning to her rivals ahead of Wimbledon. "I love grass, I love you," Kvitova told a thinning crowd at the Steffi Graf stadium. Kvitova found herself a break down early in the second set but battled back from 5-3 and moved 6-5 up with an ace. Vekic, who has shot up the rankings from 69th to 23rd this season following an Australian Open quarter-final spot and a title in Monterrey, forced a tiebreak.
