A top election official in Arizona said he would file a suit Tuesday that could bar almost 100,000 residents from voting in state and local races this fall, claiming they have not provided citizenship documents required under state law. The planned suit from Maricopa County Recorder Stephen Richer is related to a specific part of Arizona election law that requires residents to provide documents that prove citizenship to vote in state and local elections. Such documents are not required for Arizona residents to register to vote or cast a ballot in federal elections. Since 1996, Arizona has required residents to provide proof of citizenship to obtain a driver’s license. Hobbs said her office would implement "an independent audit to ensure that MVD systems are functioning as necessary to support voter registration."

However, Ford went 0 for 2 on Wednesday as an old enemy in warranty expenses returned to bite the Blue Oval. And it's an even more unfortunate setback because Ford management said on its April earnings call that the company has made "real progress" on its goal of making better vehicles. The best story at Ford remains Ford Pro , the unit that houses the company's fleet and commercial vehicles. But last quarter management said the business was tracking toward the higher end of the range, and that no longer appears to be the case. Ford Motor on Wednesday evening delivered higher than expected profits in the first quarter, driven by strength in its commercial business. Quarterly commentary Ford Blue , which represents Ford's gas-powered and hybrid vehicles, saw volumes and revenues down 11% and 13%, respectively. The lower volumes shouldn't be much of a surprise given Ford's pivot toward making more in-demand hybrids and ICE vehicles. Ford raised its adjusted free cash flow outlook for the year by $500 million to between $6.5 billion and $7.5 billion. Lowered capex with higher profits is what we want to see because greater capital efficiency should translate to a higher multiple.

Only the driver can hear the call and the person on the other end of the call can’t hear the music playing in the SUV. That’s not a new idea, but headrest speakers are usually found in convertibles where music, phone calls and navigation instructions have to overcome buffeting wind noise. Meanwhile, the person on the other end of the phone call won’t hear the music at all. Sales growth for hybrid cars is outpacing growth for electric vehicles this year. AdvertisementIt's shaping up to be a comeback year for hybrid cars — and that's partly because they're now nearly as good as their conventional vehicles, according to a Ford executive. Frick's comments come as demand for hybrid vehicles soars, partly due to drivers' worries about charging electric cars. AdvertisementFreedom of choiceThe hybrid Maverick starts at about $25,300 — some $1,500 more than the gas version. About 60% of those buying a hybrid Maverick are first-time Ford customers, product development operations chief Jim Baumbick previously told Business Insider.

The ongoing capital discipline, leverage to hybrids, profitability of Pro, and potential turnaround in quality control keep us invested in Ford. Ford Motor said it lost $526 million in the final three months of 2023, mainly as a result of special charges related to its employee pension programs and the reorganization of some of its overseas operations. The automaker said its fourth-quarter revenue rose to $46 billion, from $44 billion a year earlier, thanks to strong sales of internal-combustion vehicles and light commercial trucks. The division of the company that makes gasoline and hybrid vehicles earned $813 million before interest and taxes in the fourth quarter, and its commercial vehicle division made $1.8 billion. The unit that makes electric vehicles lost $1.6 billion. Looking ahead, Ford said it expected to make between $10 billion and $12 billion in adjusted earnings before taxes and interest this year.

NEW YORK (AP) — Cruise, the autonomous vehicle unit owned by General Motors, is suspending driverless operations nationwide days after regulators in California found that its driverless cars posed a danger to public safety. The choice to suspend its driverless services isn't related to any new on-road incidents, Cruise added. The pedestrian became pinned under a tire of the Cruise vehicle after it came to a stop. Three rear-end collisions that reportedly took place after Cruise AVs braked hard kicked off the investigation. “We welcome NHTSA’s questions related to our safety record and operations," Cruise spokesperson Hannah Lindow said in a statement sent to The Associated Press Friday.

Ford (F) reported weaker-than-expected earnings on Thursday as warranty costs ate into profits. Earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) increased 22% from last year to $2.2 billion but fell short of the $2.7 billion analysts forecasted. Ford shares moved more than 3% lower in after-hours trading in reaction to the disappointing quarter. Ford said the strike has caused Ford to trim about 80,000 units from its plan, reducing 2023 EBIT by $1.3 billion. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Ford on Thursday reported significant growth in the third quarter, although its financial results fell short of Wall Street estimates. The results came out just a day after Ford reached a tentative contract agreement with the United Auto Workers union. The Ford deal could set the pattern for agreements with the other two automakers, where workers will remain on strike. The UAW called on all workers at Ford to return to their jobs and said that will put pressure on GM and Stellantis to bargain. Shares in Ford Motor Co., which is based in Dearborn, Michigan, were down 3.4% in after-hours trading following the earnings report.

U.S. regulators are investigating General Motors' Cruise autonomous vehicle division after receiving reports of incidents where vehicles may not have used proper caution around pedestrians in roadways. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said that the reports involve automated driving system equipped vehicles encroaching on pedestrians present in or entering roadways, including crosswalks. The NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation said that it's received two reports involving pedestrian injuries from Cruise vehicles. The office said the total number of relevant pedestrian incidents is unknown. The state Department of Motor Vehicles asked for the reduction at the time after a Cruise vehicle without a human driver collided with an unspecified emergency vehicle.

Ford’s EV losses climb but overall profits rise

Automotive revenue rose 12% to $42.4 billion, $2 billion more than forecasts. And those losses are going to rise, at least in the short term. In response, other automakers, including Ford, have responded with EV price cuts of their own. The current contract between the UAW and the “Big Three” unionized US automakers — Ford, General Motors and Stellantis — expires on Sept. 14. “When it comes to building in America and partnering with UAW, Ford stands out from all the other automakers, and most other major industrial companies,” he said.

Earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) increased slightly to $3.79 billion, well ahead of analysts' predictions for EBIT of $3.16 billion. With Thursday's results, management shows it is playing to win and that the fourth quarter was an outlier. Strong profitability and cash flow generation overall in the second quarter provided the much-needed offset. Quarterly commentary Ford Blue, which represents Ford's gas-powered and hybrid vehicles, delivered a strong quarter and was again profitable in every region in which it operates. By segment, Ford expects Ford Blue to deliver full year EBIT of "about $8 billion," up from about $7 billion, and Ford Pro's EBIT to be "approaching $8 billion," up from $6 billion.

Though, Ford CEO Jim Farley made it clear Tuesday that he would not price his electric vehicles purely to gain market share. But with execution improving and our patience paid for through the roughly 5% dividend yield, we are sticking by Ford. Ford expects Ford Blue to deliver full year EBIT of about $7 billion, Ford Model e to report a loss of around $3 billion, and Ford Pro's EBIT to be around $6 billion. We maintain a 2 rating on Starbucks stock for now, but expect we may soon be looking to buy shares back. Ford cuts price of the Mustang Mach E again
  + stars: | 2023-05-02 | by ( Chris Isidore | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +2 min
New York CNN —Ford is once again cutting the price of its electric SUV, the Mustang Mach-E, as it ramps up its price war with Tesla. Tesla, the leader in EV sales by a large margin, has cut prices six times so far this year. Its price cuts have eaten into its industry-leading profit margins and added pressure to its stock price. Ford cut the price of the Mach-E in January but it has not announced price cuts for its other electric vehicles, including the F-150 Lightning pickup. So it was able to report improved results even with the EV price cuts announced earlier.
