CNN —Brazilian authorities have indicted ex-president Jair Bolsonaro, accusing him of “full knowledge” of a 2022 plot to kill his successor, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and overturn the results of the presidential election. On Thursday, Brazil’s federal police indicted 37 individuals including Bolsonaro, as part of the investigation into the fallout of the 2022 presidential elections, in which Bolsonaro’s bid for reelection was defeated, CNN Brasil reports. Police reportedly allege that Bolsonaro had “full knowledge” of a plan to prevent Lula and his government from taking office after his election victory. Earlier this week, Brazilian police arrested five people, including a former adviser to Bolsonaro, over the alleged plots. In October 2022, Lula narrowly beat Bolsonaro in the presidential election.

CNN —Brazilian police have arrested five people, including a former adviser to ex-President Jair Bolsonaro, over an alleged plot to assassinate President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in 2022, authorities said. The coup plot was conceived in late 2022, before Lula took office, according to Federal Police. The alleged plot also involved other military personnel with training in special forces, the Federal Police said. In February of this year, Bolsonaro was placed under investigation over the alleged plot. In October 2022, Lula narrowly beat Bolsonaro in the presidential election.

CNN —A businessman was killed in an apparently targeted shooting at São Paulo’s international airport on Friday, CNN Brasil reports. A vehicle matching that description was later found abandoned near the airport, and investigators are determining if it was used in the attack, CNN Brasil added. In a statement, Sao Paulo’s Guarulhos Airport confirmed that police and medical teams were immediately alerted. Military police, civil police, and highway patrol responded to the scene, and the Homicide and Personal Protection Department of São Paulo is leading the investigation, according to CNN Brasil. Two starkly different House candidates, in separate races, personify the intensifying ideological partitioning occurring within the once strongly Democratic constituency of Latino voters, whose numbers are growing. Their highly competitive races, along with a few other California congressional races, have pushed Latino voters to the front lines of the bitter fight for control of the House. “We have centered on Latino voters in our campaign,” said Whitesides, whose wife is of Cuban and Salvadoran heritage. In the same poll, 52% of Latino voters in District 27 said they support Whitesides, compared to 24% for Garcia and 24% completely undecided. In the last presidential election, Latino turnout was very high, and now it “actually is approaching the turnout rate for non-Latinos,” Vargas said.

Over the past seven decades, Puerto Rico has been governed by the pro-statehood New Progressive Party, currently in office held by Gov. This year, however, the candidate from the Puerto Rican Independence Party, a minority party that advocates for the island’s independence from the U.S., has had a breakthrough. Independence Party candidate Juan Dalmau has gained enough momentum to have a fighting chance at defeating Jenniffer Gonzalez, the candidate from the incumbent pro-statehood party, and relegating the candidate from the Popular Democratic Party, Jesús Manuel Ortiz, to third place. As a result, Congress passed the PROMESA law in 2016 to create a federally appointed fiscal oversight board to allow Puerto Rico to restructure its debt. In addition to this, Puerto Rico was hit by devastating natural disasters that include 2017’s Hurricane María and a series of earthquakes in 2020 and the pandemic.

CNN —Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump are tied among likely voters in North Carolina, while Harris holds a comfortable lead in Nebraska’s 2nd Congressional District, according to two new CNN polls conducted by SSRS. In North Carolina, Harris and Trump stand at 48% each among likely voters. In Nebraska’s 2nd District, the so-called blue dot encompassing Omaha, Harris has 53% to Trump’s 42%, the poll finds. An 86% majority of Democratic likely voters and 69% of independent likely voters favor keeping the current system, while 69% of GOP likely voters say they’d rather move to a winner-take-all system in the state. But just 41% in North Carolina say they’re very confident, rising to a 59% majority in Nebraska’s 2nd District.
