Paris CNN —France’s high-speed train lines were targeted by multiple “malicious” acts including arson on Friday, in what has been described as “coordinated sabotage” to disrupt travel ahead of the Opening Ceremony of the Paris Olympics. SNCF said one of the acts was “foiled.”Travel on these lines is “very disrupted,” with the railway network needing to divert and cancel a large number of trains, SNCF said. Passengers gather around the departure boards at the Gare Montparnasse train station in Paris. Eurostar, the high-speed train service that connects the United Kingdom with France, has been forced to cancel and divert trains due to the “coordinated acts of malice,” on French lines. Meanwhile, the Paris 2024 Olympic Committee canceled its pre-opening ceremony press conference amid the incident, and CNN has also asked Paris 2024 for comment.

However, Ford went 0 for 2 on Wednesday as an old enemy in warranty expenses returned to bite the Blue Oval. And it's an even more unfortunate setback because Ford management said on its April earnings call that the company has made "real progress" on its goal of making better vehicles. The best story at Ford remains Ford Pro , the unit that houses the company's fleet and commercial vehicles. But last quarter management said the business was tracking toward the higher end of the range, and that no longer appears to be the case. It is unlikely that any team has ever arrived at an Olympics the way the men’s soccer team of Israel rolled up to the Parc de Princes on Wednesday night. Police vans led the way, dozens of them filled with squads of French riot police and surrounded by a phalanx of officers on motorcycles. Then came more vans, more police outriders, more sirens — a stunning show of force with one task: to protect the first Israeli participants to take the field of play in the Paris Games. The security of Israel’s team at the Olympics — any Olympics — has been a critical issue since the killing of 11 athletes and coaches at the Munich Games in 1972. The ongoing war in Gaza and the global protests that have accompanied it have made the Paris Games perhaps the most fraught sporting event featuring Israeli athletes in the half-century since then.

New York CNN —Supreme, the trendy streetwear clothier adored by celebrities and cool kids alike, has been sold to an eyewear manufacturer for substantially less than it sold for just four years ago. Italian company EssilorLuxottica announced Wednesday that it’s buying Supreme for $1.5 billion in cash from VF Corp. (VFC), the parent company of Vans and Dickies, which bought the brand for $2.1 billion in 2020. Supreme “perfectly aligns with our innovation and development journey, offering us a direct connection to new audiences, languages and creativity,” EssilorLuxottica said in a statement. The company added that the brand will have its “own space” in its portfolio and marks its first-ever apparel brand acquisition. “Buying a streetwear brand at a time when that aesthetic has gone off the boil is risky, and it is not clear what EssilorLuxottica intends to do to revive Supreme’s fortunes,” Saunders said.

Cars that run on hydrogen emit zero carbon at the tailpipe, but 96% of the world’s hydrogen is still derived from fossil fuels like methane gas. That makes most hydrogen-powered cars much more polluting than battery electric vehicles, or EVs, and only marginally cleaner than traditional combustion engine cars. Toyota is supplying the Game’s official fleet, which includes 500 Mirai cars and 10 coaches that run on hydrogen, as well as 1,150 EVs, to ferry athletes around. It is also one a few major automakers betting on hydrogen-powered vehicles, as well. Hydrogen vehicles have so far failed to take off as a popular choice for consumers, and very little infrastructure to refuel with hydrogen exists.

CNN —Officials in southern Italy have broken up an alleged racket selling fake olive oil, confiscating 42 tons of the extra virgin variety worth almost $1 million. Authorities confiscated 71 tons of what was referred to as an “oily substance” in plastic tanks, as well as 623 liters of chlorophyll, a component of extra virgin olive oil that was being added to oil of a lesser value. The investigation started in September with the arrest of 11 people in Italy and Spain and the confiscation of 12 barrels containing 260,000 liters of adulterated, or non-virgin or extra olive oil. Incidents of falsified extra virgin olive oil have increased in recent years, due to both the popularity of the Mediterranean diet and the effects of climate change, which has greatly reduced production in southern Europe due to devastating droughts, according to the International Olive Council. In January, officials carried out raids at 50 restaurants in Rome and found seed oil being passed off as extra virgin olive oil.

Amazon announced on Wednesday that effectively all of the electricity its operations used last year came from sources that did not produce greenhouse gas emissions. In its announcement, Amazon said it had reached its goal of 100 percent clean energy seven years ahead of schedule. The company said it invested billions of dollars in more than 500 solar and wind projects to achieve its target. The clean energy projects Amazon has invested in can produce enough electricity to power the equivalent of 7.6 million U.S. homes, the company said. Amazon aims to reach net-zero carbon emissions from all of its operations, including its delivery vans, planes and other means of transportation, by 2040.

But, if NASCAR is known for anything, it’s the loud V8 internal combustion engines that power the race car. That’s why NASCAR wants to make it very clear that gasoline-burning race cars are in no immediate danger of extinction. ABB is also heavily involved in Formula E, the electric racing series affiliated with Formula 1. With many changes over the years, modern NASCAR race cars bear little resemblance to the Toyotas and Chevrolets that typical Americans own. This time, designers wanted to maintain that resemblance between the race car and the vehicles fans drive, which are, increasingly, SUVs.

Volkswagen, the German car company, said this week that it would invest up to $5 billion in Rivian, the American electric vehicle manufacturer that makes electric pickup trucks, sport utility vehicles and delivery vans. The deal will help Rivian, which has never turned a quarterly profit, make more electric vehicles and help convince investors of its stability. Rivian, which was founded in 2009 as Mainstream Motors, had billions in investments by 2021, including from Amazon, BlackRock and Ford. But as the case with many new electric vehicle companies, Rivian has also experienced hiccups in trying to ramp up to production, made harder by supply chain issues during the pandemic. In March, Rivian said it would pause construction of a $5 billion factory in Georgia to save money.

Almost none of the nearly 100,000 brown package vans have AC. But there have been no vans purchased this year, so no additional AC vans are on the roads. But they make up only a small fraction of the 94,000 UPS package vans on American roads. Two vans loaded with precision instruments trundled along the streets of New York and New Jersey in the heat earlier this week, sniffing for toxic chemicals in the air. They detected spikes in methane, a potent greenhouse gas, most likely from leaks, or from natural-gas-burning buses. And all along the ride, they logged elevated levels of ozone, the main ingredient of smog, as well as cancer-causing formaldehyde — both of which form readily in hot weather. The bottom line: The streets are dotted with pollution hot spots. And the heat makes pollution worse.

On the day before the F.B.I. obtained a search warrant almost two years ago to look for classified materials at former President Donald J. Trump’s private club and residence in Florida, one of the agents on the case sent a reassuring email to his bosses. “The F.B.I. Over the next 10 hours, according to court papers, there was little drama as they hauled away a trove of boxes containing highly sensitive state secrets in three vans and a rented Ryder box truck. The departure of the company’s chief product officer adds to a “wall of worry” Raymond James analysts said. Choe joined Lululemon more than seven years ago and became chief product officer in 2018, according to her LinkedIn. “I think that there’s a lot of people out there who believe that she was the person behind the scenes and was the most instrumental to Lululemon’s success,” Nikic said. Lulu has been “hyper aware” of dupe culture, Nikki Neuburger, then its Chief Brand Officer, previously said in an interview with CNN Business.
