The fed funds rate affects consumer borrowing and saving rates across the US economy, either directly or indirectly. Keep in mind, rates on savings and money market accounts will likely go a bit lower in the wake of the Fed’s rate cut Wednesday. Your debtDespite the Fed’s rate cuts, borrowers are generally not seeing notable relief because their rates have been so high. For the week ending December 12, the average rate on a 30-year fixed rate mortgage was 6.60%. “If you can shave one-half to three-quarters of a percentage point off your mortgage rate then refinancing is worth looking into.

New York CNN —If you are in a 401(k) plan at work, you very likely have the option to invest in a so-called target date fund, which also may be called a retirement date fund or a lifecycle fund. At the end of 2020, the vast majority of plans (86%) offered target date funds, and 59% of 401(k) participants had money invested in one. Typically a target date fund is a “fund of funds” – meaning its portfolio is made up of both stock funds and bond funds selected by the manager. It is especially critical in your 50s to revisit your fund’s glide path to (and possibly after) the fund’s retirement date. “If you’re an overanalyzer or overthinker, or you don’t want to worry about it, target date funds are for you,” Sharick said.

Minneapolis CNN —Higher gas prices heated up overall inflation last month, but the Federal Reserve got some welcome news: Its preferred inflation gauge cooled to its lowest level in two years. The core Personal Consumption Expenditures index, a closely watched inflation measure that excludes gas and food prices, rose 3.9% for the 12 months ended in August. However, it also was largely expected: Gas prices heated up last month as well. The Commerce Department’s monthly Personal Income and Outlays reports are typically closely watched as they provide a comprehensive account of pricing, income and spending data. Other federal data at risk for delays could include key housing and auto sales data, Census Bureau data, PCE and GDP reports, among others.

The bill, signed into law late last year, requires employers to automatically enroll all eligible workers into their retirement plans at a savings rate of 3% of salary. Americans had pension plans, Social Security benefits, and their own savings through plans like the 401(k). Those funds tend to be controlled by large asset managers. But through a process called proxy voting, large asset managers are able to vote on shareholder resolutions on behalf of their clients. Asset managers have “significant influence over company practices,” wrote shareholder advocacy group ShareAction in a recent report.

Eastman Kodak (KODK) was a Dow stock. I’ve written about B2B (aka business-to-business) software companies, cloud computing firms, IPOs and SPACs, and cannabis/pot stocks. There have been more flavors of the month in the stock market during my CNN career than at your local Baskin-Robbins. It’s fine to have a lot of your money in S&P 500 ETFs and other funds that will track the broader market. “We still continue to believe that over long periods of time, stocks provide a reasonable hedge against inflation,” Patterson said.
Vanguard’s CEO Bucks the ESG Orthodoxy

Vanguard’s Tim Buckley is having a Copernican moment. Like the famous Renaissance polymath who challenged conventional wisdom about celestial movement, the 54-year-old CEO is challenging the asset-management industry’s environmental, social and governance orthodoxy. “Our research indicates that ESG investing does not have any advantage over broad-based investing,” Mr. Buckley said in a recent interview with the Financial Times. Matching word to deed, his comments came after he had withdrawn his firm from the $59 trillion Net Zero Asset Managers initiative, an organization that is part of the $150 trillion United Nations-affiliated Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero. Mr. Buckley claims the financial world, swept up in climate-change fervor, can’t make such commitments without reneging on its fiduciary duties.
December consumer prices didn’t actually fall
  + stars: | 2023-02-10 | by ( Alicia Wallace | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +4 min
Minneapolis CNN —December consumer prices rose from the month before and did not fall as previously thought, according to revised data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics released Friday. The newly calibrated Consumer Price Index shows that prices rose 0.1% on a seasonally adjusted basis in December from November versus a previously estimated decline of 0.1%. The latest annual adjustments show slight shifts in the month-on-month inflation trend for 2022 — with November and October revised up by 0.1 percentage points. “This means that this 2023 CPI report will be based on consumer spending patterns that took place in 2021, as opposed to 2022’s CPI data, which was based on spending data over 2019-2020,” William Blair analyst Richard de Chazal wrote in a note Friday. Retirement Savings Targets by Age Saving 10 times your salary doesn't have to seem overwhelming. So how do you translate that into a savings goal? What Is a Robo Advisor, and Do I Need One?
  + stars: | 2022-12-16 | by ( ) www.wsj.com   time to read: +9 min
That’s where a robo advisor can help. A robo advisor is a digital, automated service that makes investing easy because it picks securities for you. How to start investing with a robo advisorGetting started investing with a robo advisor is designed to be easy. Robo advisor accounts are well-suited for anyone who is comfortable being online but needs a nudge to invest and would rather not do it themselves or doesn’t have the means to hire an individual financial advisor. Betterment and Wealthfront, for example, offer savings accounts, which pay substantially more than traditional bank savings accounts, as well as checking accounts and debit cards.
And that would be problematic for an economy that is driven by consumer spending. But the savings rate has come down since, in large part due to the high cost of living. The savings rate fell to just 2.3% in October, according to government statistics released last week. By contrast, the savings rate in 2019 averaged nearly 9%, according to Moody’s. Markowska expects consumer spending to remain solid until layoffs pickup steam, likely during the third quarter of next year.
It’s rough out there, but there is a silver lining: Persistently high Inflation is showing signs of slowing. “This morning’s data was a Goldilocks report,” wrote Chris Zaccarelli, chief investment officer for Independent Advisor Alliance, in a note Thursday. Gas prices also dropped between October and November, which means that inflation could keep slowing. A range of factors have led to the drop in gas prices – and not all of them are positive. The bottom line: Gas prices are still relatively high for this time of the year, but looking ahead, some forecasters see gas prices continuing to dip.

How not to run out of money in retirement

No one wants to run out of money before they die. That makes it difficult to figure out how much you can take every year from your portfolio and not outlive your money. But there are various rules of thumb to help you gauge a sustainable withdrawal rate. Rules of thumb for sustainable withdrawal ratesOne rule is a “percent of portfolio” withdrawal strategy. A more sustainable withdrawal rate might be 3.3%, according to Morningstar, or between 2.8% and 3.3% according to Vanguard.
Premarket stocks: The bond market is crumbling
  + stars: | 2022-09-29 | by ( Nicole Goodkind | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +7 min
New York CNN Business —The global bond market is having a historically awful year. Vanguard’s $514.5 billion Total Bond Market Index, the largest US bond fund, is down more than 15% so far this year. The iShares 20+ Year Treasury bond fund (TLT) (TLT) is down nearly 30% for the year. What’s next: The bond market may face fresh volatility on Friday with the release of the Federal Reserve’s favored inflation measure, the Personal Consumption Expenditure Price Index for August. If the report comes in above expectations, expect bond yields to move even higher.
“Credit spreads are too tight, they are not adequately reflecting the risk of recession. Leveraged loans and junk bonds are high-risk corporate debt. Their borrowing rates have been held in check by solid liquidity while default rates are near historical lows and not seen likely to spike significantly near-term. Earnings were better than expected in the second quarter on average, but higher rates and slowing growth are expected to make a bigger dent in profits soon, which could bring rating downgrades and higher default risk. “For now the credit market's still taking comfort from in place fundamentals and a slow pace of deterioration.
