CNN —Prague, a city as famous for its beer as its historic architecture, is set to ban late-night bar crawls, seeking to end its reputation as a party destination. Prague’s deputy mayor, Jiri Pospisil, said the city wants to discourage tourists who come “for a short time only to get drunk” in favor of “a more cultured, wealthier tourist,” according to the AFP news agency. The news, announced on Monday, follows complaints from residents in Prague 1, the city’s historic district – home to the UNESCO-protected Old Town Square, Prague Castle and the Charles Bridge – over noise caused by rowdy pub crawls. Prague joins many cities across Europe that have been pushing back against tourists in recent months. PRAGUE (AP) — František Janouch, a Czech nuclear physicist who set up a foundation in Sweden while in exile to support the dissident movement in his communist homeland at the time, has died. The Charter 77 Foundation said Janouch died on Friday morning in Sweden's capital, Stockholm, where he had lived since the 1970s. Born on Sept. 22, 1931 in the town of Lysa nad Labem near Prague, Janouch studied nuclear physics at Charles University in Prague and at universities in Moscow and St. Petersburg in the then Soviet Union. (video) Documentarele românești „Acasă” și „colectiv” au fost nominalizate la premiile Academiei de Film Europene 2020Documentarele româneşti „Acasă”, în regia lui Radu Ciorniciuc, şi „colectiv”, regizat de Alexander Nanau, au fost nominalizate la cea de-a 33-a ediţie a premiilor Academiei de Film Europene (EFA Awards). La categoria „cea mai bună actriţă europeană” au fost selectate interpretele Paula Beer („Undine”), Natasha Berezhnaya („DAU. Natasha”), Andrea Braein Hovig („Hope”), Ane Dahl Torp („Charter”), Nina Hoss („My Little Sister”) şi Marta Nieto („Mother”). Câştigătorii vor fi desemnaţi prin votul celor 3 800 de membri ai Academiei de Film Europene. În 2019, lungmetrajul „The Favorite”, regizat de Yorgos Lanthimos, a fost desemnat cel mai bun film european în cadrul unei gale organizate la Berlin.

Spectaculoasa prăbușire a Zidului Berlinului, cel mai strident simbol al separării dintre Est și Vest, a contribuit la o dramatică alterare a geografiei politice a Europei. Semnificația acestor transformări nu poate fi nicicând supraestimată: ca urmare a acelor evenimente, Europa a arătat cu adevărat altfel. Istoria, incluzând și cunoașterea tradițiilor politice și religioase ale acestor țări, ne poate ajuta să înțelegem dinamicile lor diferite, atât sub comunism, cât și în post-comunism. În partea balcanică a Europei, dezvoltarea politică în timpul secolului al XIX-lea a fost târzie și convolută. În același timp, pentru națiunile din acea parte de continent, însuși conceptul de „Europa de Est” a sunat a discriminare.

„A vedea precum un stat”, spre a folosi formula lui James C. Scott, s-a dovedit a fi o strategie cu consecințe catastrofice. Acordă o importanță mai mare unor adesea repetate și consistente acțiuni concrete […] mai degrabă decât unor soluții fundamental abstracte și plasate într-un viitor incert”. Ca răspuns la pretenția totalistă a mișcării totalitare, disidenții au reafirmat ceea ce același Patočka a conceptualizat drept „grija pentru suflet”. De aceea, comunismul s-a trezit confruntat cu indivizi care respingeau atât „traiul în minciună”, cât și orice poziții mesianice. După prăbușirea ordinii leniniste, peisajul moral al postcomunismului a fost marcat de confuzie, uri veninoase, dorințe nesatisfăcute și nesfârșite gâlcevi.

Fiică a unui influent intelectual interbelic, Eugen Lovinescu, și a unei mame care avea să moară în închisorile comuniste, Monica Lovinescu a ajuns să se bucure de un extraordinar prestigiu în România nativă. Pentru mine și mulți alți intelectuali români, Monica Lovinescu și soțul ei, Virgil Ierunca, au fost vocile clarității morale. Vreme de ani de zile, pozițiile ei deschise întru apărarea scriitorilor disidenți și a rezistenței morale la totalitarism au provocat iritarea propagandiștilor de partid și a asociaților lor securiști. Datorită Monicăi Lovinescu și Europei Libere, românii au avut un acces direct la paginile iconoclaste ale Literarny Listy. După 1990, Monica Lovinescu și Virgil Ierunca și-au văzut multe dintre predicții (inclusiv cele sumbre) îndeplinite.
