☆ Warren sounds alarm on T-Mobile, U.S. Cellular deal with Justice Department, FCC

WASHINGTON — A group of Democratic senators are sounding the alarm over T-Mobile's proposal to acquire most of US Cellular, and asking the Justice Department and the Federal Communications Commission to closely scrutinize and consider challenging the deal. The $4.4 billion deal announced in May 2024 would allow T-Mobile to use part U.S. Cellular's wireless spectrum to improve its coverage in rural areas and give it access to four million new customers. Under the agreement, U.S. Cellular would retain 70% of its wireless spectrum and towers, leasing space on other towers to T-Mobile. In Monday's letter, the lawmakers also ask the Justice Department to consider unwinding that merger, arguing that it cost customers of competing wireless carriers billions of dollars. A spokesperson for T-Mobile did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the letter from CNBC.

In Plainfield, Vt., a town of 1,350, some residents spent the past year cleaning up their homes after catastrophic floods swept through last July. On Thursday, many found themselves right back where they had started after flooding once again hit Plainfield and other parts of central Vermont, on the anniversary of the disaster that they had just started putting behind them. “It’s something very difficult to witness — people who have spent a year cleaning their place up, and now it’s covered in four feet of mud,” said Bram Towbin, the town clerk and treasurer in Plainfield. “We’re very resilient people, but these are not people of means. This is something we’ll be living with for many years.”The flooding battered roads and bridges in the state and forced more than 100 rescues and evacuations overnight.

CNN —The Oscars of the food world — the James Beard Awards — were handed out Monday night to many chefs and restaurants reflecting cultures and regions that have long been overlooked when honoring culinary achievement in the United States. Outstanding Chef winner Michael Rafidi dedicated his award to Palestinian people all over the world in his acceptance speech. The 2024 winners bring heritage from all over the globe — the Philippines, Mexico, Japan, Peru, Vietnam, Senegal — to tables across the United States. This year’s awards also bring recognition to restaurants in many smaller towns and states that have not historically been recognized with James Beard Awards. Chef Masako Morishita received the James Beard Award for Emerging Chef.

Since the constitutional right to abortion was taken away in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization in 2022, Democratic spending on abortion-related ads has jumped. Democratic spending jumped up to around one-third in 2022 after the Dobbs ruling and has stayed high. In the first four months of this year alone, 48 percent of Democratic ad spending on broadcast networks in Pennsylvania centered on abortion. A new national survey from CNBC/Generation Lab of 1,033 people aged 18 to 34 found that an overwhelming 81% of respondents believe a four-day workweek would boost their company's productivity, while 19% said productivity would decline. Exos, a U.S. coaching company that trains top athletes and leads corporate wellness programs, recently reported results from the first six months of an ongoing four-day workweek experiment. Other four-day workweek trials have shown similar gains.
