AdvertisementA year later, I got the opportunity to return to Amazon as a boomerang employee. I'd always been told that a value at Amazon was to treat "the candidate as a customer," but didn't experience that. Related storiesRTO implementation was inconsistentA few weeks later, in May 2024, I accepted a different offer from Amazon for a Nashville-based role on another team I'd applied for. My layoff should've been the writing on the wall — this place has changed — but I clung to the idea of the Amazon I'd once respected, not wanting to recognize what it had become. The Amazon I joined in 2016 thrummed a "fail fast and often" mentality, encouraging risk-taking that led to delightful innovations.

How to talk like a banker
  + stars: | 2024-11-03 | by ( Emmalyse Brownstein | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +9 min
A manager might leave a comment on a page telling the junior banker to "kill this," which just means delete it. A manager might also instruct the junior banker to "take another stab" at it, which means doing the presentation over again and sending it back by email. In stock market talk, "trading with the Street" usually means someone is trading along the lines of majority opinion. It's so much a part of the culture that the term is also used by higher-ups to describe their junior bankers professionally. Each time a banker makes changes to client materials pre-meeting — like a deck — it's standard practice for every round of edits or changes to be saved as a new file.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Vice President Kamala Harris on Friday continued to steer clear of criticizing President Joe Biden, arguing that vice presidents not denigrating the commander-in-chief is an American tradition. "To be very candid with you, even including Mike Pence, vice presidents are not critical of their presidents. Harris dismissed her critics, including Trump, claiming that "joy" has disappeared from her campaign. NBC News has reached out to the Trump campaign for comment. Both Harris and Trump have been doing targeted media interviews in the final weeks of the campaign.

It’s not hard to conclude that former President Donald Trump himself makes it nearly impossible to have the type of debate Vance and Walz participated in Tuesday night. But Trump has never participated in a debate that didn’t devolve into something more pugilistic and even immature and juvenile at times. Going into this debate, I assumed that both vice presidential nominees would be more focused on the tops of the tickets. It's an interesting decision given how it seems as if the Trump campaign team desperately wants to re-attach Biden’s unpopular brand to Harris. I think Trump and his team are convinced Harris needs another debate more than Trump does.

Mark Zuckerberg explains his hiring philosophy
  + stars: | 2024-07-24 | by ( Ana Altchek | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +3 min
But Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in an interview with Bloomberg's Emily Chang published Tuesday that the most important thing is "learning how to think critically and learning values when you're young." Zuckerberg said in the interview that his "hiring philosophy" follows this line of thought. It's not the first time the CEO has talked about considering a candidate's values when hiring. While Zuckerberg may have a strict standard for hiring candidates, the tech giant has slowed its hiring compared to the pandemic-era growth. Zuckerberg said earlier this year the company would continue to limit its head count and hiring plans would remain "relatively minimal."

CNN —The ascension of Vice President Kamala Harris to become the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee in less than 48 hours is an unprecedented occurrence in American politics. Only four people in US history have won a presidential election as a sitting vice president. Back then, the vice president was the runner-up in the presidential election. In 1861, Vice President John Breckinridge oversaw the counting of electoral votes that made Abraham Lincoln president, at a time when Southern states seceded from the country rather than accept Lincoln’s 1860 victory. Vice President Richard Nixon narrowly lost the 1960 election to John F. Kennedy and oversaw the counting of electoral votes in 1961.

At Meta, McKinnon was aware of what other teams were working on, partly through the company's internal forums and dashboards. At Google, employees mostly communicate through email or chat, so it's more difficult to know what everyone is doing, McKinnon wrote. At Google, McKinnon saw that projects were largely created and led by software engineers, and PMs played a more auxiliary role.

Courtesy of Anwar WhiteIn dating, White said professional women should be more like CEOs because it helps them set boundaries. Like many other ambitious women, Sherri found herself balancing a "go with the flow" dating approach with her instinct as a professional to be hyper-organized — aka "intern energy." "Now I am the CEO of my dating life, and I control my schedule, control the pace of all my relationships." Zuckerberg is expected to tout the company’s more than 30 safety controls, according to prepared testimony released ahead of the hearing. In recent weeks, Meta has also begun hiding more “age-inappropriate” content in teens’ feeds and restricting teens from receiving direct messages from people they don’t follow. Ideally, Clegg said, Zuckerberg would authorize as many as 124 new hires, but acknowledged that financial pressures could make it difficult. After months of radio silence from Zuckerberg, Clegg tried to follow up, this time with a slimmed-down proposal that envisioned either 25 new hires or, if even that was infeasible, just seven. “This would be the bare minimum needed to meet basic policymaker inquiries,” Clegg wrote to Zuckerberg on Nov. 10, 2021.

Tech workers in Europe enjoyed a golden period of inflated salaries during the pandemic. One CEO told Insider that he now feels some staffers aren't "worth" the pandemic price tag. That didn't just apply to good engineers, always gold dust, but to good HR staff, marketers, and other less technical roles. Few CEOs will say this aloud, but this attitude has clearly manifested in widespread, global layoffs across the tech industry. Pay for tech workers in Europe in general rose significantly during COVID-19 with salaries increasing by around 50% between 2018 and 2021, according to data from Advanced HR, cited by Sifted.
