Earnings drove the stock market higher — can they do it again in the week ahead? But he acknowledged that timing is key because our portfolio discipline mandates that we consider lightening up our stock exposure in an overbought market. In fact, AMD was our worst-performing stock for the entire week, losing more than 7% following the prior week's 1.8% slide. Energy was the worst sector of the week for the market as oil prices sank. In the week ahead, housing numbers are the main draw on the economic front.

Biden sought to kickstart SAF production with a $1.25 per gallon production tax credit in the IRA. To be eligible for the credit, SAF producers must demonstrate their fuel is 50% lower in emissions than conventional jet fuel. The DOE spokesperson confirmed that ethanol producers must cut emissions of they want a long-term role in SAF production. Still, ethanol producers need carbon pipelines because many ethanol plants are not near geologically appropriate underground storage sites. Other options for reducing ethanol's carbon intensity include using renewable energy at ethanol plants, or climate-friendly farming practices for corn.

Cutouts depicting images of oil operations are seen outside a building of Venezuela's state oil company PDVSA in Caracas, Venezuela January 28, 2019. U.S. sanctions that were in place on Venezuela since 2019 largely blocked state-run oil company PDVSA from exporting to its chosen markets. That changed last week, but Washington's six-month relaxation of the measures is too limited to spur new crude production. PDVSA also is in talks with Mercuria Energy and Sahara Energy on spot sales, the sources said. The Italian company and Spain's Repsol (REP.MC) have been in negotiations with PDVSA for months to expand gas output in Venezuela.

The auction could start a new chapter for the 113-year-old company, which has been owned by Venezuela for almost 40 years. Washington and Venezuela's political opposition wanted Citgo to anchor the country's economic future under a democratically elected government. The sale could become the biggest court auction ever held. Motiva, Valero and Citgo's ultimate parent, Venezuela's state oil company PDVSA, did not reply to requests for comment. The widely followed energy analyst is often ahead of the curve, including in early 2020 when he warned that oil prices could dip negative. And if there's a recession, less economic activity should lead to even lower oil prices. However, higher oil prices would further weigh on demand from consumers and businesses, which raises the risk of causing — or worsening — a recession. Paul Sankey, Sankey Research (based on Bloomberg data)Although refining margins have downward momentum, Sankey said a long oil market drawdown isn't necessarily a foregone conclusion. Geopolitical tensions are an increasingly serious threat, JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon has recently warned, and a sudden conflict breakout could cause oil prices to surge.

Within the bond market, he likes Treasurys most, with 10-year yields offering more than a 4% coupon. A 1.5% 10-year Treasury is a bad deal, and of course bonds have sold off hard," he said. Aug 1 (Reuters) - U.S. refiner Marathon Petroleum Corp (MPC.N) reported a 63% drop in second-quarter profit on Tuesday, as improved fuel supplies and slowing economic activity compressed its margins. Despite a resilient fuel demand in the U.S., an increase in global refining capacity compared with last year and slowing economic activity has brought the market down from the peaks seen in 2022. Refining and marketing margin was $22.10 per barrel for the April-June quarter, down from $37.54 per barrel a year earlier. On an adjusted basis, Marathon reported earnings of $5.32 per share, beating average analysts' estimate of $4.59 per share, on the back of improvement in refining costs and lower tax rate. Rival Valero Energy Corp (VLO.N) last week also saw its quarterly profits dwindle as refining margins came under pressure, but beat estimates on strength in its renewable diesel business.

HOUSTON/CARACAS, July 7 (Reuters) - Venezuela's opposition is crafting a proposal for the country to redirect about 200,000 barrels per day of its oil exports to a trustee to pay creditors with claims on the nation's foreign assets. A negotiation team representing Venezuela in late 2022 began formal talks with some creditors, including miner Crystallex and oil producer ConocoPhillips (COP.N), to avoid the loss of Citgo. A license by the U.S. Treasury Department would be required and Venezuelan state oil company PDVSA would not have access to cash flow from those exports, Medina said. One of the opposition's arguments is that PDVSA is currently forced by U.S. sanctions to sell its oil in Asia at deep discounts. Energy analysts estimate the U.S. Gulf Coast has more room for processing Venezuela's heavy sour crude grades.
