Dividend stocks could be poised to get their moment in the sun as interest rates fall – and investors only need to take a simple step to boost their long-term returns in these positions. "As rates fall, we might see people looking for longer-term alternatives and, in turn, dividend-paying stocks," he said. For starters, it's a form of dollar-cost averaging into a position, meaning you're buying the stock at regular intervals regardless of the price. "It allows them to reinvest this dividend on a regular scheduled timeframe and have a great opportunity for a larger total return over the long term." The ProShares S & P 500 Dividend Aristocrats (NOBL) has a total return of nearly 15% in 2024 and an expense ratio of 0.35%.

The funds target distributions equal to six times the dividend payouts on the Nasdaq-100 Index and four times the S & P 500 dividend, respectively. The idea behind the Pacer funds is that the funds will capture more of that upside during market rallies, according to Sean O'Hara, president at Pacer ETF Distributors. The QDPL's website currently shows a distribution yield of 5.79%, or more than four-times the roughly 1.3% dividend yield on the S & P 500, according to YCharts.com. The dividend futures could also see bigger gains if more companies in the index decide to start paying dividends. To be sure, the dividend futures contracts could also decrease in value during times of economic stress.

With the S & P 500 surging more than 18% in 2024, it might be time for investors to make a few defensive moves in their portfolios. But that surge is spurring some financial advisors to reassess their clients' exposure to large-cap tech and turn toward currently unloved asset categories that could be poised to rise. "It might take a little longer to manifest but we think [health care] is an interesting combination of offense and defense, and it provides meaningful cash flows for investors," Saccocia said. Checking in on risk and cash Investors reviewing their 2024 gains should also reassess their risk profile and consider whether their asset allocation reflects their long-term goals. The coalition is pushing to replace three current Starbucks board members with its own nominees. The SOC proxy presentation claims the company's board has backed what it calls an "unnecessarily confrontational" strategy with the union. Starbucks said it has not only a new CEO, but with these additions, it has added five new board members in the past year. The proxy presentation targets three current Starbucks board members: Ritch Allison, Andy Campion and Jørgen Vig Knudstorp. Allison, Campion and Knudstorp, specifically, provide "continuity and highly-valuable unique perspectives," the Starbucks presentation said.

These so-called derivative income funds — which include popular covered-call offerings such as the JPMorgan Equity Premium Income ETF (JEPI) — gathered $22 billion in flows last year , according to Morningstar. "I don't see volatility drying up, especially with where inflation is and this being an election year," said Barry Martin, portfolio manager of the Shelton Equity Income Fund (EQTIX) . "Instead of owning a covered call fund, you can buy a dividend fund that's paying 3% in dividend income," said John Rekenthaler, vice president, research at Morningstar. Be tax conscious: Derivative income funds can bring tax complexity because they can spin out income that's subject to short-term capital gains treatment. Comparison shop: Morningstar labels covered call funds and their ilk as "derivative income funds," but each offering will have its quirks, and this could affect its risk-return profile.

As attractive as today's yields may look on certain dividend-paying stocks, they only tell part of the story when you're choosing names for income. Lower interest rates make other income-generating assets, including dividend-paying stocks, more attractive compared to the risk-free yields on Treasurys. Dividend stocks took their lumps during 2022 as the Fed embarked on its rate hikes – consider that the Vanguard Dividend Appreciation ETF (VIG) posted a total return of negative 9% in 2022 – and rate-sensitive income stocks in the utilities and real estate sector suffered. Check with your brokerage to make sure you have dividends reinvested as your preference for individual stocks and ETFs. Picking the right names Dividend investors are seeing 2024 as a potential rebound year for these stocks, anticipating a broadening rally.

Money market funds were a hot item this year, but it may be time to think about shifting some of that cash into other investments. Investors flooded into the funds, bringing the total assets to $5.89 trillion for the week ending Dec. 13, according to the Investment Company Institute. The Crane 100 Money Fund Index currently has an annualized 7-day yield of 5.19%. Yet, if rates go down next year, as expected, the yields in short-term instruments such as money market funds and high-yield savings accounts will follow suit. The firm also likes stocks with high dividend growth and free cash flow , such as Kroger , CVS Health and Qualcomm .

Today's higher interest rate environment drives home the reason why investors should scrutinize stocks offering tempting double-digit yields. Digging beneath the surface Multiple factors may contribute to a stock touting high dividend yields at first blush. First, there are dividend sustainers – companies that have made steady payments for years, including Merck , Johnson & Johnson and Southern Co . Investors who want to hunt dividend payers shouldn't go for the biggest yielders, but instead look for names that are in the second or third quintile among dividend payers, he said. "For many investors, you can get a pretty good dividend play and a good yield through ETFs at a low cost," said Ebersole.

The government should reduce the interest rate on federal student loans, and forgive any that's accrued. Half of Americans support forgiving up to $20,000 in federal student loan debt, a figure that soars to 83% among those who have student loans. Forgiving all student loan debt still maintains 39% support, a remarkably high figure for a fiscal policy that even a decade ago would have been an utter non-starter politically. Americans owe just south of $1.6 trillion in student loan debt. As a result, an equitable solution is this: retroactively adjust the interest rate on federal student loans to be at or near zero.

But whether it's time to back up the truck and stock up on cheap dividend payers will depend on a range of factors, including risk appetite and style. Notable constituents include Altria Group, which has an 8.3% dividend yield, and Verizon , which touts a yield exceeding 7%. This would include the Vanguard High Dividend Yield ETF (VYM) , which has a total return of about -1.6% this year, and the WisdomTree U.S. Total Dividend ETF (DTD) , with a total return of 2.5%. VIG, for instance, has a total return of 6% this year, but offers a 30-day SEC yield of 1.82%. Whether it's time to snap up these dividend payers will also depend on your risk appetite and your timeline.

June 29 (Reuters) - AIP Capital said it was in talks to pick up a 10% stake in Eastar Jet as the aviation asset management arm of U.S.-based private equity firm 777 Partners seeks to tap into the travel resurgence in Asia. AIP would also lease five Boeing 737 MAX 8 jets to the South Korean low-cost airline, it said without disclosing the additional terms of the deal, which is expected to close mid-July. In 2021, Eastar Jet had filed for court receivership as the COVID-19 pandemic battered the travel industry. Earlier this year, South Korean private equity firm VIG Partners bought the airline and agreed to inject 100 billion Korean Won ($75.98 million) into the carrier, according to a DealStreet report. Separately, AIP announced that it has closed a minority investment and joint venture agreement with consulting and investment firm Dreamstone Aviation Partners.

As such, we recommend buying Dividend Aristocrats, which are companies that have a long track record of increasing dividends," Senyek said. Additionally, Dividend Aristocrats' outperformance has tended to persist during the initial stages of recoveries, which also tend to be highly uncertain environments," he added. One fund that tracks the group directly is the ProShares S & P 500 Dividend Aristocrats ETF (NOBL) . Those funds have a total return of 1.7%% and 3%, respectively, so far this year. Another similar product is the iShares Core Dividend ETF (DIVB) .
April 6 (Reuters) - U.S. dividend funds have faced steep outflows this year after strong inflows last year as investors rush to safer money market funds and bank deposits, providing high returns without much risk. According to Refinitiv data, U.S. dividend funds witnessed an outflow of $5.6 billion in the first quarter of this year, the first in 10 quarters. On the other hand, U.S. money market funds secured a massive $391.5 billion inflow in the first quarter, the biggest in three years. "As long as the stability and income generated from money market funds remain attractive relative to stocks, the outflows may continue this year." However, some analysts said dividend funds are still the safer option as they invest in companies with solid balance sheets and healthy cash flows which are likely to be more resilient during an economic slowdown.
Starbucks union organizers are stepping up pressure on individual members of the company's board. Leaders at Nike, Lego, and Land O' Lakes were targeted using billboards, a movie trailer, a brass band, and even a butter sculpture. The push comes a week after shareholders voted in favor of an investigation into Starbucks' labor practices. Meanwhile, in Los Angeles and online, a Lego Movie-styled trailer premiered with the aim of enlisting Lego President Jorgen Vig Knudstorp to join the side of Starbucks workers. And now, those tensions are spilling over to other companies as the union targets Starbucks' board of directors.
Nearly 300 company-owned Starbucks cafes have voted to unionize under Workers United, according to National Labor Relations Board data. Starbucks Workers United is deploying a butter sculpture, brass band, billboard and movie posters to put pressure on the coffee chain's board to accept the union. This year, they're back, but despite the surge in thematic ETF performance to start the year, investors have yet to throw significant sums of money into the game. "Despite the surge in thematic ETF performance to start the year, investors are yet to start allocating again.
The " Fast Money " traders are looking to capitalize on the rising yields in money market funds and dividend-paying stocks. The largest taxable money market funds, as ranked on Crane Data's 100 list, are yielding an average 4.18% as of Feb. 2 — returns not seen since the financial crisis. Money market funds jumped to an all-time record $4.82 trillion in total assets the week ended Feb. 1, according to the Investment Company Institute. Higher-return dividend payers, which carry more risk, may be an option for investors looking for safety right now, too. "I won't hold it against them, however, if they do have a great dividend," Finerman added.
The companies are rated buy by at least 70% of the analysts covering them. Cabot, which yields 2.1%, has nearly 22% upside to the average price target. The Vanguard High Dividend Yield Index (VYM) , for example, with more than $50 billion in assets, saw shares outstanding increase 20%. Dividend ETFs are typically divided into two groups: high dividend and dividend growers. ETFs that specialize in high dividends include iShares Select Dividend ETF (DVY) and Vanguard High Dividend Yield ETF (VYM), and these are typically paying yields in the 3% range. Dividend growers include ProShares S & P 500 Dividend Aristocrats ETF (NOBL) , Vanguard Dividend Appreciation (VIG) and Schwab U.S. Dividend Equity ETF (SCHD) . There are 58 of those in the S & P 500, including Caterpillar, Air Products, Franklin Resources, Aflac, and Procter & Gamble.
The Amplify Enhanced Dividend Income ETF (DIVO ) ranks in the top 5% of all ETFs in terms of inflows in 2022. As dividend ETFs continue to outperform the S&P 500 this year, Todd Rosenbluth of VettaFi said that advisers are consistently seeking alternatives to traditional fixed income — including dividend income strategies and covered call strategies. VettaFi recently surveyed advisers to canvas their views on dividend strategies and discovered a possible shift in how they approach the funds. "Instead of looking at it from an income component that they've historically done throughout 2022 in the rising rate environment, they're now looking for more growth from these strategies," Rosenbluth explained. As a result, VettaFi expects dividend growth products to garner more attention, like the WisdomTree US Quality Dividend Growth ETF (DGRW ) and Vanguard Dividend Appreciation Index ETF (VIG ).
