☆ Shein reveals child labor cases at its suppliers

Fast fashion retailer Shein found two cases of child labor at its suppliers last year, it said in its 2023 sustainability report, as it stepped up audits of manufacturers in China to assuage criticisms of its low-cost business model ahead of a planned flotation. Shein tightened its supplier policy last October after the child labor cases were found, so that any severe breaches — called “Immediate Termination Violations” — would result in ending the relationship with the supplier immediately. Previously, suppliers such as those that employed minors had 30 days to resolve the issue, failing which Shein would cut ties. That violation was found in 1.8% of supplier audits in 2021, 0.3% of audits in 2022, and 0.1% in 2023. “We remain vigilant in guarding against such violations going forward, and in line with current policies, will terminate any noncompliant suppliers,” Shein said in the report.

Some of them were alums of Project Veritas, the conservative group known for elaborate sting operations targeting liberal organizations, journalists and unions. The man at the center of the fracas was Michael Spadone, a former Project Veritas field director. In that role he oversaw staffers who used hidden cameras to embarrass people Project Veritas targeted. James O’Keefe, the Project Veritas founder, was ousted from the nonprofit last year. Before Spadone left Project Veritas, he was the subject of a sexual harassment lawsuit filed by a former administrative assistant.

Harris, 42, was sentenced in April to one month in jail and three months of home detention. She had been scheduled to surrender Tuesday at noon to begin serving her jail sentence. "The defendant is currently in state custody in connection with those charges." The arrest report, obtained by CNBC by the McIntosh County Sheriff's Office, shows that Harris was arrested at 11:30 p.m.

The conduct of the woman, Aimee Harris, “was despicable and consequently very serious,” Judge Laura Taylor Swain of Federal District Court for the Southern District of New York said before handing down a punishment. Ms. Harris, 41, tested the patience of prosecutors and the judge overseeing the case after she missed repeated sentencing dates, jeopardizing what otherwise appeared to be a likely path to probation. In August 2022, she pleaded guilty to conspiring to transport the stolen diary to New York, where she met with employees of the group, Project Veritas, and sold it for $40,000 just weeks before the election.

CNN —Archaeologists say they have discovered what may be the largest mass grave ever excavated in Europe at a site in southern Germany. The remains are thought to date from the 1632-1633 plague epidemic. This evidence led the team to conclude that the older group of remains probably dates from the 1632-1633 epidemic. “I personally expect the number to be at 2,000 or even above, making it the biggest mass grave in Europe,” he said. Next up is work to complete the excavation, as well as cleaning and analyzing bone material, Langbein told CNN.
