The base GOP voters Trump is most focused on aren’t necessarily the same voters who are key to the coalition Snyder is trying to build. Gretchen Whitmer, and two-seat majorities in both the state House and the state Senate (Democrats also hold a majority on the state Supreme Court). “The only advantage they have is old notions,” Whitmer said last week at her own event to support state House candidates in Oakland County. All the districts he’s targeting “can swing either way,” Snyder said. Rick Snyder is openly trying to get MAGA extremists elected to the state House,” Kubitschek said.

A 19-year-old man, Thuong Oo, stood in the middle of the group, shouting into a megaphone. The police had killed Mr. Oo’s 13-year-old brother, Nyah Mway, two days earlier and he was angry. Late on June 28, an officer shot Nyah after the boy had been seen with what turned out to be a pellet gun and was tackled to the ground. “I went to the hospital and they said they had a shootout with my brother,” Mr. Oo told the crowd. “But I watched the video and it said different things, so it doesn’t make any sense.”Many of those encircling Mr. Oo were members of the Karen, a refugee ethnic group from Myanmar, and almost all them were young.

More than 100 residents of Utica, N.Y., grieving the death of a 13-year-old boy who was fatally shot by a police officer there last week, gathered at a church on Sunday afternoon to demand accountability for his killing. The boy, Nyah Mway, was walking in the city with another boy on Friday night when they were stopped by three police officers. When one officer asked to pat them down, Nyah fled, footage from officers’ body-worn cameras shows. The police said in a statement that Nyah had displayed “what appeared to be a handgun” as he ran. On Sunday, the mayor of Utica, Michael P. Galime, answered questions from residents who filled the auditorium at Tabernacle Baptist Church.

ILION, N.Y. (AP) — A gun factory in upstate New York with a history stretching back to the 19th century is scheduled to close in March, according to a letter from the company to union officials. RemArms, the current version of Remington Arms, will close its facility in the Mohawk Valley village of Ilion around March 4, according to the letter sent Thursday. The plant currently employs about 270 workers, according to union officials. The factory site in the village dates to 1828, with many of the current buildings constructed early in the 20th century. The current company no longer makes the Bushmaster AR-15 rifles used to kill 20 first-graders and six educators in the Sandy Hook shooting in Connecticut in 2012.

U.S. energy firms have cut domestic oil and gas drilling activity to the lowest level since April 2022 with declines from Texas to Pennsylvania. Analysts expect further cuts this year with oil and gas prices off from last year's strong levels. "We are more constructive on where oil prices could go." Global benchmark Brent crude was trading at $77.10, while U.S. natural gas prices were trading around $2.58 per million British thermal units. It expects to flatten drilling activity there and turn more to Ohio's Utica and Wyoming's Powder River Basin, he added.

The conservative Democrat from West Virginia, who has been critical of the Biden administration’s environmental goals, praised the White House and congressional Republicans this week. “All of a sudden, [the White House] did their job, they negotiated. Manchin has been critical of Biden's climate goals, but praised the White House and congressional Republicans this week for their work on the debt ceiling deal. White House officials backed Manchin’s effort last year, and climate and energy officials – including White House senior adviser John Podesta and Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm – voiced support for approving the pipeline more recently. An AI-powered weapons scanner meant to create "weapons-free zones," fails to detect knives. A New York school district bought the nearly $4 million system and then found out it didn't fully work. It spent close to $4 million to buy an AI-powered weapons scanner from Evolv Technology that the company bills as "proven artificial intelligence" able to create a "weapons-free zone." Evolv Technologies claims on its website that its weapons detection system can scan for weapons 10 times faster than traditional metal detectors. Evolv co-founder Anil Chitkara told WRAL, a news station in North Carolina, that the "AI algorithm is trained on thousands and thousands of different items, different weapons, different guns and also, different personal items, phones, keys, and other things."

That means that unless people start having a lot more kids, the US population could eventually start to shrink — just like China's population has. While the US population has managed to avoid an outright drop, population growth reached an unprecedented low of 0.12% in 2021. One way the US could encourage more immigration is by focusing on temporary visas for specific industries that need workers. And the treatment of workers in the country on temporary visas has been a problem for decades. After all, the US is running out of options, and soon its growing people shortage is going to spell economic disaster.

Joe Manchin must feel as afflicted as Job. As the Biden Administration undermines the provisions the West Virginia Senator negotiated in return for his vote last year for the Inflation Reduction Act, a Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals panel on Monday struck down another permit for the Mountain Valley Pipeline. The 304-mile pipeline has been stuck in regulatory and legal purgatory for several years. It aims to deliver natural gas from Appalachia’s Marcellus and Utica shale deposits to the mid- and south-Atlantic regions. Although the pipeline is more than 90% complete, a three-judge Fourth Circuit panel keeps blocking permits needed to finish it.
They left the Verizon store and went to a nearby Apple store, where they used my Chase credit card to spend $6,370. And two, because a physical credit card had been used to make the purchases, even though I was still in possession of my card. Typically, when your credit card is about to expire, as mine was, the bank sends you a new card a few weeks ahead of time. All told, the gang allegedly stole hundreds of identities and defrauded retailers and credit card companies of $1.3 million. Whoever hacked my identity, it makes sense that they started with my credit card.

A cold air mass over Alaska and western Canada was expanding to the south and east Sunday through the holiday week, the National Weather Service said Saturday. Icy "upper-level energy" ahead of the mass has already triggered winter weather advisories for parts of Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan, forecasters said. It will eventually impact the northern Rocky Mountains, the Midwest, the Northeast and areas in between, the National Weather Service said. In all, more than 144,000 utility customers from New York state to New England were blacked out by the storm, according to NBC News estimates. As the night deepened Saturday, temperatures dove below freezing even in areas below the Mason-Dixon Line, with even colder weather en route.
