A group of more than a dozen Republican lawmakers is urging a collegiate athletic conference to ban transgender women from competition after reports of a trans student competing on the s women’s volleyball team of a participating university. “Under these guidelines, it is only fair that biological males play men’s sports and biological females play women’s sports.”“Clearly, the Mountain West Conference has dropped the ball,” it continues. In September, SJSU volleyball player Brooke Slusser joined a lawsuit filed by more than a dozen women athletes against the NCAA, which oversees collegiate athletics, about trans athletes’ participation in school sports. A fourth university has forfeited its women’s volleyball match against San José State University following controversy over the gender identity of one of the team’s players. In the lawsuit, Slusser says the teammate who was the subject of the media coverage told her she was a trans woman. Tony Hoang, the executive director of Equality California, said that in forfeiting matches against SJSU, school administrators are harming all students involved. The Republican governors of both Utah and Idaho publicly supported decisions by Southern Utah University, Utah State University and Boise State University to cancel their matches against SJSU. A Utah woman who went viral and was dubbed a "Karen" after she allegedly pulled down a young woman's skirt that she found to be too short and revealing in public has entered into a plea deal on a misdemeanor sexual battery charge. Ida Lorenzo, 49, confronted a young woman on April 20 at a St. George, Utah, eatery in a spat partially caught on camera. In the video, posted April 21, she appears to brag that she works for the state as she admonished the young woman for her skirt. She told police that she confronted a young woman at a restaurant who was wearing “explicit clothing” that exposed her private parts with children present. The female victim said she was wearing underwear and shorts under her skirt, making it impossible to have been exposing herself.

A popular double arch that hung over the turquoise waters of Lake Powell in Utah’s portion of Glen Canyon National Recreation Area collapsed on Thursday, officials said. The National Park Service confirmed the collapse in a statement on Friday, noting that the arch was a frequently visited attraction and had been known to park-goers over the years as the Toilet Bowl, the Crescent Pool, the Hole in the Roof and the Double Arch. The geologic feature was formed from 190 million-year-old Navajo sandstone, park officials said. The elements had eroded away the fine-grained sand structure over the years and caused fragments to break off, officials said.

CNN —A strange monolith found jutting out of the rocks in a remote mountain range near Las Vegas has been taken down by authorities. Members of the Las Vegas police search and rescue team found the object near Gass Peak, part of the vast Desert National Wildlife Refuge where bighorn sheep and desert tortoises can be found roaming. Then came sightings in Romania, central California, New Mexico and on the famed Fremont Street in downtown Las Vegas. CNN —Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. will appear on Hawaii’s presidential ballot following a Friday ruling that blocked an effort by Hawaii Democrats to disqualify his campaign’s ballot access petition. Hawaii marks the third state where Kennedy has officially qualified for ballot access. He gained ballot access in Michigan, a key battleground state, earlier this week after qualifying for Utah’s ballot earlier this year. A spokesperson for the Hawaii Office of Elections confirmed to CNN that Friday’s ruling means Kennedy will appear on the state’s ballot. SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah’s Republican governor and lieutenant governor are urging the State Board of Education to take action against a conservative school board member whose social media post questioning the gender of a high school basketball player incited a tirade of threats against the girl. But as laws banning trans girls from girls' sports have spread across Republican-led states, false accusations such as this have threatened the safety of both trans and non-trans youths. Spencer Cox said Cline has “embarrassed the state” by dogpiling on a child she thought to be trans. Democratic state lawmakers are calling for Cline's immediate resignation, and the governor and lieutenant governor have asked the school board to “hold her accountable.”The State Board of Education condemned Cline's actions in a statement Thursday but said it has no power or authority to unseat her. The Granite School Board will hold a special meeting Friday to discuss a resolution condemning Cline for targeting one of its students.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Incumbent Erin Mendenhall has won her reelection bid for mayor of Utah’s capital in a ranked-choice contest that included a challenge by Salt Lake City's former Mayor Rocky Anderson. Ballot returns released Wednesday, which included all scannable ballots in the Salt Lake County clerk’s possession, showed Mendenhall with 58% of the vote to Anderson's 34%, the Salt Lake Tribune reported. “As seemed pretty clear last night, these more final results clearly indicate that Mayor Mendenhall has won reelection,” Anderson said. “This election ends with voters saying loudly and clearly that they want Salt Lake City to keep moving forward together,” Mendenhall said.
