However, that's not feasible for workers earning the minimum wage in many large U.S. cities, according to a recent Clever Real Estate report. In seven major cities, you'd need to earn more than quadruple the federal minimum wage of $7.25 to afford the fair market rent without spending more than 30% of your income on housing or working a second job, Clever found. To determine the minimum wage needed to afford a fair market priced rental in the 50 largest U.S. metros, the report analyzed wage and housing data from a variety of sources, including the U.S. Department of Labor and the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Clever follows HUD's definition of fair market rent, which is the price at which 60% of similar units in the area rent for more than the listed amount and 40% rent for less. Here are seven major U.S. metros where workers would need to make quadruple the minimum wage in order to comfortably afford rent, according to Clever Real Estate.

Housing costs are the biggest expense most people face, so knowing how much you can afford to spend can be key to staying on top of your budget. As a rule of thumb, financial planners commonly recommend spending no more than 30% of your gross income on housing, whether that's mortgage or rent costs. This advice is often based on guidelines set in the 1980s by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, which defined spending beyond 30% as "housing cost burdened." That means if you earn the U.S. median income of around $80,000, you should aim to keep your housing costs to $2,000 a month. Considering that Americans are routinely spending more than 30% of their income on housing, the guideline can feel more like an ideal than a realistic rule of thumb.

Lumumba faces five charges, including one count of federal program bribery and another count of money laundering. Banks has been charged with one conspiracy to commit federal program bribery, honest services wire fraud and money laundering, in addition to a count of federal program bribery. At least seven people have pleaded guilty in relation to the scandal. “This indictment is a horrible example of a flawed FBI investigation,” Owens told reporters after he pleaded not guilty Thursday.

Trump is also wary of special elections to replace sitting lawmakers, especially in the Senate. has conveyed that he is not interested in entering the Trump administration, according to three sources familiar with the decision. Sessions, an adviser to Trump in 2016, was one of his earliest supporters when Trump elevated him from the Senate to run his Justice Department. The special election to replace him also turned into a centerpiece of Democratic organizing against Trump. Though the GOP won the special election narrowly, Republicans lost Price's congressional seat in the midterms and then watched Georgia turn blue in 2020.

That explains a lot about why Trump was reelected. Why the US economy stings so muchHousing: America’s home prices have reached new record highs for 15 straight months. No, really, the US economy is greatStill, Trump will be inheriting a strong economy — on paper, anyway. But they’re still growing at a 3.9% adjusted rate, according to the Department of Labor. Rent costs have long weighed on lower-income households — now it’s coming for the middle class. A cost-burdened household is defined as one paying 30% or more of pretax income on rent and housing costs. This figure is widely used as a threshold for affordability: the Census Bureau measures housing costs against it, and the Department of Housing and Urban Development has used it for decades. While nearly 40% of middle-class renters are burdened by costs nationwide, in Tennessee that figure is 37%, placing it among the upper half of states with the largest share of cost-burdened middle-class renters. The growing pressure on middle-class renters may finally be spurring political action.

From coast to coast, the minimum wage is falling short of how much Americans need to comfortably afford average rent prices in major cities. The federal minimum wage has sat at $7.25 for the past 15 years. Fair market rent is based on the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's fair market rent standard. Under this model, around 40% of similar units in the area rent for less than the listed fair market rental price and 60% rent for more. Here's how the minimum wage in 15 large U.S. cities compares with the hourly wage you'd actually need to earn in order to comfortably afford a one-bedroom dwelling at fair market price, per Clever Real Estate's data.

Although sentiment is improving (more on that soon), poll after poll suggests that Americans hold largely negative views about the US economy. And the US economy remains a job-creation machine, adding 368,000 jobs per month on average during the Biden administration, a record high. But they’re still growing at a 3.9% adjusted rate, according to the Department of Labor. A recent study from the Brookings Institution, released last week, found a correlation between economic sentiment and political affiliation with the party in control of the White House. When Trump took office, Republican economic sentiment surged, while Democratic sentiment cratered.

CNN —The world’s trees are in critical danger, with a staggering number of tree species teetering on the brink of extinction, according to a new global analysis released Monday. AOC is behind a new bill to create a federal social housing developer. CNN —Archaeologists in Denmark have unearthed more than 50 “exceptionally well preserved” skeletons in a large Viking-era burial ground in the east of the country. The skeletons were buried alongside artifacts from far beyond Denmark’s borders, suggesting Vikings traveled extensively for trade, according to the team from the museum. The conditions at the site are what helped keep the skeletons in such good shape, he said. “We had no clue that there was going to be a burial ground with Viking skeletons there,” Lundø said.
