The long-lost worm is Haplosyllis anthogorgicola, a species of bristle worm, or polychaete. But as Forreau was sorting her underwater photos of seahorses and corals, she made another unexpected discovery: The worms’ coral burrows were visible in the images. Perhaps, she thought, that might also be the case in other photos of pygmy seahorses. Images of pygmy seahorses taken by scuba divers were crawling with worm photobombs. Worms’ limbs, heads and tails poked out of coral burrows in the hundreds; the scientists even counted seven examples of worms crawling on seahorses’ bodies.

The bitter nationwide debate over transgender rights is playing out on a very personal level in a federal court lawsuit filed in Virginia by a former Liberty University employee. She was fired by the evangelical Christian school after disclosing her identity as a transgender woman. The lawsuit on behalf of Ellenor Zinski was filed in July by the American Civil Liberties Union of Virginia and the Richmond law firm of Butler Curwood. Earlier this month, the conservative legal organization Liberty Counsel filed a brief on behalf of the university asking the federal district court to dismiss the lawsuit. CNN —People who only exercise on weekends have a similar risk of developing mild dementia to those who work out more frequently, a new study has found. A team of academics from Latin America and Europe set out to determine whether the frequency of exercise affects the risk of developing mild dementia. The finding led the team to conclude that 13% of cases of mild dementia could be avoided if all middle-aged people exercised at least once or twice a week. When compared with the group that did not exercise, the weekend warriors were 13% less likely to develop mild dementia, and those in the regular and combined groups were 12% less likely. I feel quite strongly that the weekend warriors around the world should be told that what they are doing is fine.”He added: “The weekend warrior research is starting to add up now.

These materials — so-called rare earths — are not actually that rare but can be challenging to extract as they are often found in low concentrations. They wanted to understand whether this was “a geological accident, or is there something inherent about those iron-rich volcanoes that makes them rich in rare earth elements?” Anenburg told CNN. Pilot Knob National Wildlife Refuge in Missouri, a former iron-ore mine, could also hold rare earth elements. Some experts have suggested there should be more of a focus on recycling rare earth elements rather than mining.

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine government said Tuesday that it had filed a diplomatic protest against Beijing after Chinese jets flew dangerously close and fired a volley of flares in the path of a Philippine air force patrol plane over a disputed shoal in the South China Sea. The Southern Theater Command of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army said Saturday that a Philippine air force aircraft “illegally” entered the airspace above the shoal, which China claims, disrupting its combat training activities. The command sent jets and ships to identify, track and drive away the Philippine aircraft, it added. In 2013, China announced a new Air Defense Identification Zone over the East China Sea that covers a chain of disputed islands also claimed by Japan. Washington has repeatedly warned that it is obligated to defend the Philippines, its oldest treaty ally in Asia, if Filipino forces, ships and aircraft come under an armed attack, including in the South China Sea.

This week, researchers at the University of the Witwatersrand ‘s Radiation and Health Physics Unit in South Africa injected 20 live rhinos with these isotopes. It now stands at around 27,000 due to continued demand for rhino horns on the black market. South Africa has the largest population of rhinos, an estimated 16,000, making it a hotspot with more than 500 rhinos killed every year. News of the resignation, which earlier appeared in The Philadelphia Inquirer, broke as students were protesting the closure on campus, holding signs with messages including “It’s not noble for artists to suffer” and “We are not trash don’t throw us away.” Union officials told The New York Times that a meeting to start layoff negotiations on behalf of some 450 employees was abruptly canceled Tuesday by the school’s outside legal counsel as faculty learned that Walk was stepping down. “We are appalled,” United Academics of Philadelphia, one of the unions representing employees, wrote in a statement. “This sudden resignation, announced via the media, continues the pattern of disregard and cruelty to which the University of Arts has subjected employees and students.”On Sunday, the University of the Arts posted a statement to its website saying that “despite our best efforts, we could not ultimately identify a viable path for the institution to remain open and in the service of its mission.” It has not commented on Walk’s resignation; she served as university president for less than a year. Before she joined the University of the Arts, Walk was the president of Marymount Manhattan College for eight years.
