Now, young men have emerged as a voting bloc that could potentially swing an election expected to see a razor-thin margin of victory for the candidate who wins. The trend has been especially pronounced among young men of color. Adding to the complexity is that younger men have actually experienced solid economic gains, at least on paper, during the Biden administration. Yet, some young men continue to express concerns about making ends meet, and say they consider current immigration policies to be an obstacle to their upward mobility. In Detroit as in the rest of the U.S., the violent crime rate has dropped and is near historic lows. Last month, new FBI numbers showed that murder declined 11.6% in 2023, the largest single year drop on record. But Trump and his allies have also cherrypicked statistics and falsely told supporters that FBI crime data can’t be believed. Crime data skeptics also have attributed declining crime numbers to “woke prosecutors” who are failing to file charges. But Trump uses these low 2020 and 2021 victim survey numbers, despite the doubts cast on them, to argue that violent crime has spiked significantly during the Biden-Harris administration.

Pro-Palestinian protesters stormed the Institute of Politics building at the University of Chicago on Friday afternoon, overturning furniture, damaging property and confronting the institute’s director, former Senator Heidi Heitkamp. She refused their demand that she leave her office, university officials said, adding that she was the only staff member in the building. In a statement, the protest group on Friday said that it had occupied the building to protest the University of Chicago’s ties to Israel. Bystander video showed protesters climbing through second-floor windows to leave the building as the crowd below cheered. After demonstrators were cleared from the building by the police, other protesters remained outside and in yards nearby, chanting, yelling and pounding drums.

CNN —Last week, the Supreme Court issued a ruling that makes it harder to hold people responsible for harassment. So it’s clearly urgent for institutions to strike the right balance in protecting the free speech of critics without allowing them to chill the free speech of those with whom they disagree. It sends a symbolic message that protecting freedom of speech requires tolerating lower-level harassment speech, which often intimidates speakers into silencing themselves. Free speech is crucial to academic discourse, but something is wrong with a statement of “free speech” that allows courses to be censored due to online harassment of their instructors. The Supreme Court’s newly declared permissiveness toward online harassment is only likely to embolden more of it.

In a city with a thick portfolio of unsolved cases, the May 21, 1991, murder of the religion professor Ioan Culianu stands out as one of Chicago’s strangest.
