CNN —A rigorous nine-year research review looking at the relationship between fluoride and intelligence in children concludes that as fluoride levels rise, IQ drops. “Thus, despite the presentation of some evidence of a possible association between IQ and high fluoride levels in water, there is no evidence of an adverse effect at the lower fluoride levels commonly used in [community water fluoridation] systems,” he wrote. Most of the studies – 45 – come from China, where researchers first noticed differences in intelligence between communities exposed to high fluoride levels and those that were not. Children exposed to the highest fluoride levels scored about 7 points lower on IQ tests than those exposed to the lowest fluoride. Emerging evidence suggests that in addition to IQ, fluoride might be associated with behavioral problems in children, Hu said.

The blockbuster drugs Ozempic and Wegovy may help people cut back on drinking, new research published Wednesday in JAMA Psychiatry suggests. Just over 28 million adults in the U.S. have alcohol addiction, according to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. Several other studies have examined drinking habits among people taking GLP-1 drugs who do not have alcohol use disorder. Around 75,000 people in the study used some type of medication to treat alcohol use disorder. So far, the clearest results have come from studies on alcohol addiction — but there is still a lot to understand.

Elon Musk says a leaderboard of "dumb" government spending will expose waste — and he wants your two cents. The Tesla CEO said this week that he planned to post a public "leaderboard for the most insanely dumb spending of your tax dollars." While the effectiveness of Musk's leaderboard remains to be seen, experts told Business Insider it showed his marketing savvy — even if it could also encourage "gotcha" moments that need more context. Especially in a dry realm such as government spending, Musk's plans are bound to grab eyeballs — and perhaps make people feel more invested in the outcome. She said there was some precedent for Musk's leaderboard, noting that former Sen. As I see other generations of music lovers say music was so much better when they were younger, I wondered why. “It’s not that music was better when (we) were younger; it’s that music elicits very, very strong emotions,” said Dr. Rita Aiello, a music psychologist at New York University who examines how people process music and how music and memories shape each other. “Music is episodic,” said Dr. Robert Cutietta, a professor of music at the University of Southern California. A 2022 replication of the latter study in Marketing Letters: A Journal of Research in Marketing found that a person’s music preference peaks as young as 17. It may be because you’re remembering the artists, songs and albums that were meaningful to you and forgetting the ones that weren’t.
