KINSALE, Ireland — Three days and 225 miles later, a group of almost 100 serving and retired firefighters from New York and Ireland will cycle into a garden of remembrance on Wednesday to honor those who were killed in the 9/11 terror attacks. Ambassador's Dublin residence on Monday, the hardy group made their way across Ireland’s lush, rolling hills peddling their way to 17 fire stations and a fair few pubs along the way. It's part of a bid to raise money for the victims and for those still suffering from injuries and the effects of their work at Ground Zero. “We lost 343 firefighters in an instant,” one of the cyclists, Michael Schreiber, told NBC News on Monday, adding that 370 had died since 9/11. “I lost so many friends that day, and I still continue to lose guys,” he said.

They were both at the ceremony supporting their mother, Maureen Tippington Lipshie, who was one of the family members reading names, including that of her brother. She was a nurse who set up a first aid station at ground zero. According to the Uniformed Firefighters Association, 341 firefighters, paramedics and other Fire Department employees have died from cancers and other illnesses linked to the toxic dust at ground zero. They sat by the South Pool and listened to the names being read from a loudspeaker hung on a nearby tree. Ms. Espinoza’s husband, Otto Espinoza, was a police officer who died of cancer in 2015 after being assigned to search and rescue teams at ground zero.

CNN —The number of first responders who have died from 9/11-related illnesses now almost equals the number of firefighters who died during the terror attacks themselves. A total of 341 New York City Fire Department firefighters, paramedics and civilian support staff who died from post-911 illnesses are now memorialized at the FDNY World Trade Center Memorial Wall, according to the Uniformed Firefighters Association. The memorial commemorates both first responders who died during the attacks and those who died from related illnesses in the years since. That count almost equals the 343 New York firefighters who died during the 2001 attacks. More than 71,000 people are currently enrolled in the World Trade Center Health Registry, a long-term study seeking to understand the physical and mental health effects of the terror attacks.
