But whether they are measured by income or educational attainment, President-elect Donald Trump won working-class voters overall while he made strong gains among nonwhite working-class voters like Hispanics and Asian Americans. As recently as 2012, non-college-educated voters were splitting their votes evenly or even slightly in favor of Democrats. But that has left the party’s leaders, donors, operatives and other decision-makers more removed from the lives of low- and middle-income workers, some labor leaders say. But there is widespread frustration that Trump outflanked Democrats to position himself as a champion of working people, as well as dissatisfaction with Democrats not limited to white or male union members. But that policy was not enough to overcome larger societal forces that have led many working-class voters to doubt Democrats’ commitment to their well-being.

WASHINGTON — Speaking to a federal judge in July 2019, a flummoxed career Justice Department lawyer made a statement that summed up former President Donald Trump’s shoot-from-the-hip and often chaotic form of governance. The move put Justice Department lawyers in a quandary, led to the entire legal team’s being replaced and still ended in defeat when, just days later, the administration backed down. And there is little to suggest a second term would be any different. “I tend to think the past is prologue,” said a lawyer who served in a senior position in the Trump administration. “What we are preparing for in the chance of a second Trump administration is that, frankly, the legal maneuvers they would try to do would be better organized,” he said.

First openly transgender lawyer to argue at Supreme Court

An American Civil Liberties Union lawyer will make history in December as the first openly transgender attorney to argue before the U.S. Supreme Court, opposing Tennessee’s Republican-backed law banning gender-affirming medical care for transgender minors. The Supreme Court on Monday ordered that the argument time for the ban’s challengers be divided between the Justice Department and attorneys representing the original plaintiffs who sued the state. Several plaintiffs — including two transgender boys, a transgender girl and their parents — sued in Tennessee to defend the treatments they have said improved their happiness and wellbeing. The Supreme Court has confronted several cases in the past decade implicating LGBTQ rights. In 2020, it ruled that a landmark federal law forbidding workplace discrimination protects gay and transgender employees.

New York CNN —McDonald’s has been thrust into in the 2024 election, gaining particular attention over the weekend when former President Donald Trump served fries at a Feasterville-Trevose, Pennsylvania, location. Although franchise owners have to abide by certain guidelines in their agreements with the parent company, they are free to invite political candidates to serve fries without McDonald’s buy-in. We are not red or blue – we are golden.”The letter was signed by McDonald’s President Joe Erlinger. Still, some McDonald’s customers and employees spoke out against the company after Trump’s visit, criticizing McDonald’s for allowing the Republican presidential candidate to campaign at a restaurant. “He was proud to highlight how he and his team serve their local community and make delicious food, like our World-Famous French Fries,” the company said.

It was unclear what percentage of the 250,000 seasonal workers, which include staff in sort centers, fulfillment centers and delivery stations, would be in fulfillment centers or transport employees. The transport employees will not include delivery service partners or their teams, according to a company spokesperson. Online holiday shoppers are expected to spend a record $240.8 billion, up 4.9% from last year. While Amazon's hiring plans remain flat compared to last year, the company is still outpacing big box competitor Target, which will tack on 100,000 workers for the season. Automation is a core issue at play in the ongoing dockworker strike at Eastern US ports. AdvertisementStriking dockworkers at US ports say they're worried that jobs could plummet as shipping companies increasingly turn to automation. Picketing workers gathered at ports in New York and Miami carrying signs reading "Machines don't feed families" and "Fight automation, Save jobs." AdvertisementThe union's objection to the way shipping companies are using automation now is a key sticking point in the negotiations for a new labor contract. The move eventually contributed to the ILA earning the unusual distinction of being a labor union being named in an unfair labor practices complaint filed by management.

CNN —The International Brotherhood of Teamsters declined to endorse a presidential candidate on Wednesday after releasing internal polling that showed a majority of its members supported former President Donald Trump over Vice President Kamala Harris. The Trump campaign highlighted that support from “rank-and-file” Teamsters members following the union’s announcement that it would not be endorsing. CNN previously reported that rank-and-file union membership had large pockets of Trump support, even as major labor leaders endorsed Harris. That survey also included Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who garnered about 6% of members’ support. While union members are thought of as a traditionally Democratic voting bloc, Trump has been working to make inroads among rank-and-file members.

New York CNN —Amazon is raising pay for its more than 800,000 US warehouse and transportation workers and giving them Amazon Prime for free. Amazon will also offer the $139 yearly Prime benefit to employees for free. Amazon’s decision to raise wages is another sign of a tight jobs market for logistics workers, fueled by more Americans shopping online. The average hourly wage for transportation and warehouse workers rose to $30.79 in August, up 22% from August of 2020, according to the Labor Department. Rivals such as UPS, Walmart and Target have also bumped up wages for warehouse workers.

A group of Amazon delivery drivers hold a labor strike at the DAX7 Amazon Sortation Center in South Gate. Amazon should be considered a "joint employer" of some of its contracted delivery drivers, a regional director for the National Labor Relations Board said Wednesday. Amazon has fought to avoid being designated as a joint employer of its sprawling network of contracted delivery companies. Over the past year, the Teamsters has stepped up its efforts to organize Amazon delivery and warehouse workers. Since then, it's led a number of strikes at Amazon delivery facilities, while a labor group at an Amazon warehouse on New York's Staten Island opted to affiliate with the Teamsters in June.

New York CNN —Most of the 10,000 hotel workers who went on strike during the busy Labor Day weekend have returned to work Wednesday, but one group of 700 union members in San Diego will stay on strike for the foreseeable future. Those workers, employed at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront, will remain on strike until there is a contract agreement, their union, Unite Here, says. The union has not ruled out using the same rolling strikes strategy this time, or expanding the strike to other locations. The strategy is intended to help workers keep as many days of pay as possible during a contract negotiation. Beyond the hotel workers, limited duration strikes have been used to win labor deals for school employees in Los Angeles, health care workers at Kaiser Permanente, janitors, nursing home employees and other workers in Minnesota who went on strike together in March.

Three officials from different countries said the measured response comes as they are mindful of what happened after Maduro’s 2018 reelection. Then, the vote was quickly condemned as a sham and led to the most severe sanctions yet on the OPEC nation. In Washington, which under Republican President Donald Trump blocked Venezuela’s critical oil exports, there seems little appetite for more severe sanctions. The European Union last week said there was not enough evidence to support Maduro’s victory as announced by the CNE. A ‘harsh reality’ for EVsFord likes to brag about its growing EV sales, but its profit is still primarily coming from the sales of gasoline powered trucks and SUVs. Ford isn’t the only automaker pulling back on its EV plans and making new investment in ICE vehicles. This is not to say that the traditional automakers are dropping their EV plans altogether or that EV sales are falling. But EV sales, which initially grew at a double-digit pace, haven’t shot up exponentially as automakers hoped or expected. That uncertainty about the future of US EV incentives prompted automakers to reconsider their earlier EV plans.

London CNN —French stocks and government bonds struggled to find direction Monday following surprise results in France’s parliamentary elections, which saw left-wing parties outperform the far right Sunday, leaving the country’s parliament facing gridlock. The yield, or return sought by investors, on benchmark 10-year bonds rose by a fraction of a percentage point to 3.22% by 8.09 a.m. But the premium traders demand to hold French bonds instead of the ultra-safe German equivalents was lower on the day. However, it was still a lot higher than before French President Emmanuel Macron called the snap elections on June 9. The value of the currency, which is shared by 19 other countries in the EU, has swung wildly since June 9.

Macron had called for a new legislative nationwide vote in France after the country's far-right party made significant gains in the European Union election last month. The gamble that French President Emmanuel Macron took when he called a snap election has not paid off, according to Armin Steinbach, Jean Monnet professor of EU Law and economics at HEC Paris. Macron's centrist Ensemble bloc is set to make up the second-largest group in parliament, followed by the RN and its allies. Just because the far-right did not perform as they had hoped in this election does not mean they should be discounted for the presidential election in 2027, Steinbach added. "For today it's a loss for them, … but it doesn't tell us anything about the 2027 presidential election.

Apple is imposing unfair restrictions on developers of applications for its App Store in violation of a new European Union law meant to encourage competition in the tech industry, regulators in Brussels said on Monday. The charges further escalated a tussle between Apple, which says its products are designed in the best interest of customers, and E.U. regulators, who say the company is unfairly using its size and considerable resources to stifle competition. Apple is the first company to be charged for violating the Digital Markets Act, a law passed in 2022 that gives European regulators wide authority to force the largest “online gatekeepers” to change their business practices. regulators said Apple was putting unlawful restrictions on companies that make games, music services and other applications.

Read previewChina has spent at least $230 billion on government support to electric vehicle makers such as BYD since 2009, according to a new study from the Centre for Strategic & International Studies think tank. Government subsidies have been a central pillar of China's quest to become an EV powerhouse over the past decade. AdvertisementChina is now the world's largest electric vehicle market, accounting for 60% of global EV sales in 2023, per the IEA — well above rivals like the US and Japan. EV makers in China can get government support through several routes, including infrastructure subsidies, tax exemptions, and buyer rebates. Massive government support has cultivated intense competition among China's legion of EV companies, which in turn has led to low prices.

The first round of the French elections is scheduled for June 30, followed by a second round on July 7. This week, the pope is due to make an historic intervention in the debate around AI at the G7 summit in southern Italy’s Puglia region. AI, the pope believes, can make the world a better place only if it serves the “common good” and does not increase inequalities. European Union lawmakers have already passed a law regulating AI, while a bipartisan group of US senators have set out plans for AI regulation that could lead to federal legislation. “AI and emerging technologies are on Pope Francis’ radar screen,” Larrey, now a professor of philsophy at Boston College, told CNN. It’s clear that Francis sees AI as part of what he called the “epochal change” taking place at the beginning of the 21st century.
