Amazon said Thursday John Felton, the company's top logistics executive, will take over as chief financial officer of its AWS cloud computing unit. In a blog post, Doug Herrington, Amazon's worldwide retail chief, said Felton would take on a new role as senior vice president and Amazon Web Services CFO. Udit Madan, Amazon's vice president of transportation, will replace Felton. Felton has been with Amazon for nearly two decades, most recently serving as the head of its worldwide operations division. Felton will replace AWS' current CFO Richard Puccio.

Amazon has for years been marching toward making same-day and next-day delivery the standard for members of its Prime loyalty club. For the past four years, Amazon has poured money and resources into revamping its warehouse and delivery network to shorten shipping times from two days to one day or less. But Amazon's change cut costs and boosted delivery speeds, Madan said. Amazon plans to double the number of same-day sites in its network over the next two years, Madan said.

Amazon may be prioritizing items that can be delivered to you quickly in search results. In doubling its warehouse footprint in recent years, Amazon can now ship items within regions of the US faster. According to Madan, Amazon data shows the faster items are delivered, the more likely a customer will become a return shopper. "This isn't something we could have easily done in 2019 because we had a much more sparse network," Madan told the Journal. The company also said the distance items travel between fulfillment centers and customers has decreased by about 15%.
