Research shows that ordering food for delivery has gotten expensive, yet demand remains high. But demand for food delivery has remained high — as has its price. Last week, food delivery company DoorDash, reported an 18% rise in orders year over year in its third quarter of 2024. A food delivery driver previously told BI that he decides to accept or pass on a variety of deliveries often based on the highest upfront tips. But despite lockdowns coming to an end and the country gradually opening back up, people grew accustomed to the trend of ordering food.

Driving for Uber and Lyft has helped bring in some money, but not enough to offset expenses. "What I can tell you is I barely work," Sharp said. "In May I worked two days, in April I worked four days, in March I worked two days, in February I worked two days, in January I worked one day." "I'm not embarrassed about that, but when I’m willing to work — and bust my ass — why is it that I can’t get a living wage?" Ironically, fast-food jobs are now quite difficult to obtain, Sharp said, not least because their hourly wages are higher than in many other industries thanks to California's new $20 minimum wage for workers in the sector.

Student debt relief activists participate in a rally at the US Supreme Court on June 30, 2023 in Washington, DC. “Of course, the lowest-earning households still collectively owe around $7 billion a year in student loan repayments. After the Supreme Court dashed any hopes of loan forgiveness, more Americans started making loan payments before the official repayment period, as well as interest, kicked in. “It’s just all the supplemental spending, a lot of that will disappear so that we can make room for the [student loan] payments,” he said. Oppenheimer has regained its appetite for Domino's Pizza shares. Analyst Brian Bittner named the Michigan-based pizza chain a top pick and raised his price target to $450. "We view DPZ as an under-appreciated revival story into '24, and elevate the idea into our 'top picks,'" Bittner said in a note to clients Tuesday. But Bittner tied that past pessimism to a downward revision cycle that he now believes has ended. "Following an updated analysis, we believe EPS estimates have bottomed and identify self-help catalysts for a positive revision cycle set to unfold," he said.

Adolph sued Uber in 2019, claiming the company misclassified UberEats drivers as independent contractors rather than employees, who must be reimbursed for work expenses under California law. A unique California law called the Private Attorney General Act, or PAGA, allows workers to sue for employment law violations on behalf of the state and keep one-quarter of any money they win. The California Supreme Court said nothing in that law bars workers from pursuing claims on their own behalf in arbitration while separately litigating large-scale claims in court. Michael Rubin, who represents Adolph, said the ruling could spur companies to reconsider forcing workers' claims into arbitration if large-scale PAGA lawsuits can still proceed in court. Business groups maintain that arbitration is quicker and more efficient than court, allowing workers to recoup more money.

DoorDash recently fired a driver after he cursed at a woman for tipping $5 on a $20 order. It comes as more businesses are asking customers to tip at cash registers and even at self-checkout stations. In a blog post from 2019, Grubhub suggested customers tip 20% — and consider adding more if it's an extra-big order, or if there's bad weather. That means the woman who tipped $5 on her $20 DoorDash order — which is a 25% gratuity — actually gave quite a good tip, drivers said. "A $5 tip on a $20 order?

Uber, DoorDash, and Grubhub are suing New York City to block a new minimum wage law for delivery workers. Beginning on July 12, delivery apps must pay drivers about $18 per hour they are active on the app. Beginning July 12, delivery drivers in New York City must earn a minimum wage of about $18 an hour, according to a law signed by Eric Adams last month. The new minimum wage would require delivery apps to either pay drivers roughly 50 cents per minute of every trip or pay drivers $17.96 per hour they are active on the app. "Now because there are more delivery drivers and people are ordering less and tipping less, it's becoming more difficult.
