CNN —American gymnast Jordan Chiles’ legal team has submitted a new application in the Federal Supreme Court of Switzerland over the decision that led to her losing an Olympic bronze medal, pointing toward new video evidence that Chiles’ lawyers say proves her case. Chiles’ attorneys say that a documentary crew has video and audio recordings to prove Chiles’ case. Romanian gymnast Ana Bǎrbosu appeared to have locked up the bronze medal after Chiles finished her routine. That decision led to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) handing the bronze medal to Bǎrbosu. Chiles’ latest filing follows an earlier filing, from September 16, where Chiles opted to appeal CAS’ decision to the Federal Supreme Court of Switzerland.

CNN —Jordan Chiles filed an appeal of the decision that led to the US gymnast being stripped of an Olympic bronze medal, her attorneys announced Monday. Chiles was stripped of her first individual Olympic medal after the Romanian gymnastics team challenged the decision to revise her final score in the floor exercise to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). Chiles has now opted to appeal CAS’ decision to the Federal Supreme Court of Switzerland – where CAS is based. “Jordan Chiles’ appeals present the international community with an easy legal question—will everyone stand by while an Olympic athlete who has done only the right thing is stripped of her medal because of fundamental unfairness in an ad-hoc arbitration process? The United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) said they are determined to see Chiles receive the recognition she deserves.

"I'm really passionate about changing the support around the sport," Richard told CNBC in an interview after the Olympics ended. That content hopefully is not only driving more eyeballs to the men's gymnastics, but participants as well. Men's gymnastics consistently lags in popularity behind women's at the collegiate level, where meets are regularly televised, and at the international level. There are only 12 Division I NCAA Men's Gymnastics programs, and more are at risk of cuts. "I don't think it's ever been a situation where that many people are watching men's gymnastics … and left feeling like it was worth it."

U.S. gymnast Jordan Chiles was stripped of her floor exercise bronze medal Sunday by the International Olympic Committee after a scoring inquiry was deemed invalid. Chiles is the only gymnast in history to be stripped of an Olympic medal for reasons other than age falsification or failed drug tests. The bronze medal debacle is the sport's most high-profile controversy since the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, the site of the biggest scandal in Olympic gymnastics history. Jordan Chiles competes during the Women's Gymnastics Floor Routine final competition at the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics, at the Bercy Arena in Paris, on Aug. 5, 2024. The U.S. women's gymnastics team, which initially finished fourth in 2000, was awarded the bronze medal in 2010 after the Chinese team was disqualified.

A study on long Covid fails to bring researchers closer to finding a diagnostic test. Why there’s no test yet for long CovidAn estimated 17 million people have long Covid, but identifying people with the condition still can't be achieved with one diagnostic test, researchers said this week. So “clinicians are left to continue doing what we have done in the past,” which is to rule out other potential health conditions rather than diagnosing long Covid, they said. The study is part of the National Institute of Health’s RECOVER Initiative, a billion-dollar-plus effort launched in 2021 to research causes and treatments of long Covid. The Freedom Caucus added that in the event of a stopgap bill, funding should be “extended into early 2025” to avoid passing a funding bill that “preserves Democrat spending.” Both demands would spark a standoff with Democratic lawmakers.

Read previewA contentious judging decision and messy appeals process has roiled women's gymnastics — and spiraled into an international argument for Olympic bronze between the US and Romania. It kicked the final decision to the International Olympic Committee, which ordered Chiles to return her bronze medal. On Sunday, USA Gymnastics said it had video evidence — which it hadn't previously submitted — which proved Landi's inquiry was made within 47 seconds. USA Gymnastics vowed Monday to "continue to pursue every possible avenue and appeal process, including to the Swiss Federal Tribunal." USA Gymnastics declined to comment beyond the statements on its website.

USA Gymnastics said Monday it can prove that a coach's appeal that put gymnast Jordan Chiles on the podium for a bronze medal in Paris was by the book, but the effort may be futile because the governing court said its rules don't allow for reconsideration in this case. However, Monday’s statement calls into question whether Chiles can keep her medal, which the International Olympic Committee said she must return, upholding the CAS ruling. “USA Gymnastics was notified by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on Monday that their rules do not allow for an arbitral award to be reconsidered even when conclusive new evidence is presented,” USA Gymnastics said in its statement. But Chiles' coach, Cecile Landi, filed an inquiry, which was accepted and resulted in an elevated score of 13.766, allowing Chiles to leapfrog Bărbosu for bronze. The Romanian Gymnastics Federation and Bărbosu subsequently filed an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, arguing the inquiry was too late.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport on Monday rejected USA Gymnastics’ request to reopen the case into the Olympic gymnastics women’s floor exercise scoring, one day after the International Olympic Committee said Jordan Chiles’ bronze medal would be reallocated to Ana Bărbosu of Romania. AdvertisementThat led the International Gymnastics Federation to amend its floor exercise standings, dropping Chiles to fifth, and prompted the IOC to adjust its medals accordingly. USA Gymnastics, however, said Sunday it received video evidence showing the coach, Cecile Landi made the appeal 47 seconds after Chiles’ score was posted — 13 seconds within the window — and it submitted the evidence to CAS for review. But Landi submitted an inquiry to challenge the difficulty score of Chiles’ routine. Its ruling invalidated Chiles’ score.

PARIS — U.S. gymnast Jordan Chiles must return her bronze medal in the floor exercise, the International Olympic Committee said Sunday, upholding findings that a coach's protest that got her on the podium shouldn't have been allowed. Romanian Ana Bărbosu, 18, will now be the floor exercise bronze medalist. "We are devastated by the Court of Arbitration for Sport ruling regarding women’s floor exercise," according to a statement issued by USA Gymnastics on Saturday night. "The inquiry into the Difficulty Value of Jordan Chiles’ floor exercise routine was filed in good faith and, we believed, in accordance with FIG rules to ensure accurate scoring." "I am taking the time and removing myself from social media for my mental health thank you," she wrote.

CNN —The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced on Sunday that the bronze medal given to American gymnast Jordan Chiles in the floor exercise at the Paris Games will be awarded to her Romanian counterpart Ana Bărbosu. And the IOC confirmed that the score change will mean Chiles will be stripped of her bronze and given to Bărbosu. Ana Bărbosu reacts after competing in the women's floor exercise. U.S. gymnast Jordan Chiles might lose her bronze medal. She had placed fifth before the inquiry, behind both Romanians, but received a tenth back on her final score, boosting her onto the podium. In one, the team asked that the 0.1 point penalty for stepping out of bounds on Maneca-Voinea's final score be returned because it was "given without basis." It also requested that Chiles, Maneca-Voinea and Bărbosu all be placed in third and earn bronze medals. If she had not received the deduction, Maneca-Voinea would have scored higher than Bărbosu and Chiles, even after Chiles' score was increased on appeal.

CNN —The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ruled on Saturday that the initial inquiry made by the USA over Jordan Chiles’ score in Monday’s gymnastics floor exercise final was filed after the one-minute deadline. That means that Chiles’ score is being reverted to the original 13.666, which was only good enough for fifth place. It’s unclear as of Saturday what that means for the bronze medal that Chiles was awarded. Immediately after the competition finished on Monday with Chiles’ routine, Romanian gymnast Ana Bărbosu thought she had won the bronze medal after posting a score of 13.700. CNN has reached out to the FIG to ask what their ruling will be on whether Chiles’ medal will be revoked.
