CNN —Bela Karolyi, the legendary and controversial Romanian American gymnastics coach who helped lead Mary Lou Retton, Nadia Comaneci and Kerri Strug to Olympic gold, has died, USA Gymnastics announced. Still, Bela Karolyi remained unapologetic to the end for the methods he used to blaze a path to sports glory. And by his senior year, he was coaching the school’s women’s gymnastics team, whose star Marta Enoss would become his wife and professional ally. “I think he was learning gymnastics with us.”At age 14, Comaneci famously scored the first “perfect 10” in Olympic gymnastics. “Prior to entering the Bela Karolyi camp, I knew one thing; Bela was my bus pass to the Olympics,” Okino wrote in 2001.

As an unwed woman and frequent wedding guest in 2024, I am maybe too attuned to the ways weddings have become increasingly extravagant. On Reddit, one user noted that being a bridesmaid in her best friend’s wedding in a Scandinavian town, where the friend’s family is from, is going to run her $8,000. And some guests are being denied plus-ones, making attending the wedding less of a joy and more of a dutiful chore. Even in times of high inflation, like now, while some may try to cut back, expensive weddings prevail. Weddings are the rare time in life where everyone you care about will likely come together — friends, family and loved ones.

“I think you were trying to roast me, but this is actually fact — I do have a BMI of 30. Critics say the term BMI has become a societal judgment by lumping individuals into arbitrary categories that perpetuate misconceptions about body weight. “She could easily say, ‘I am in perfectly good health, so just take your BMI of 25 and shove it.’”That’s exactly the scenario facing Maher. Conversely, BMI can underestimate body fat in older adults and anyone who has lost muscle, according to the Harvard T.H. ☆ Italian Boxer Quits Bout, Sparking Furor Over Gender at Olympics

An Italian boxer forfeited her bout at the Paris Olympics after only 46 seconds on Thursday, refusing to continue to fight an Algerian opponent who had been banned from a women’s event last year in a dispute related to her gender. The Italian boxer, Angela Carini, withdrew after her Algerian opponent, Imane Khelif, landed a powerful blow that appeared to strike Carini square in the face, knocking her head to the left. Khelif was permitted to compete at the Olympics even though she has been barred from some women’s competitions for not meeting eligibility requirements to compete in women’s events. Another athlete also barred from previous women’s events, Lin Yu-ting, has also been cleared to fight in Paris. Their presence in the women’s competition has become the latest flashpoint in the debate over gender and fair play in sports.

CNN —The US women’s soccer team qualified for the quarterfinals of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games with an unbeaten record after its 2-1 victory over Australia on Wednesday. The US was victorious in all three of its group games, allowing it to book its spot in the next round as Group B winner with nine points from nine available. The US women’s national team will face Japan in the next round. But far from Paris, at James Jones Gymnastics Academy (JJGA) in Jonesboro, Georgia, everyone — from the eponymous Jones himself to his gymnasts – are Black. Japan’s Ayaka Furue sank a dramatic, clutch putt for eagle on the final hole of the 2024 Amundi Evian Championship in France on Sunday to win by one stroke. Coming into the final hole, there was a three-way tie with Furue, Australian Stephanie Kyriacou and Thailand’s Patty Tavatanakit at -17. Furue calmly rolled in the eagle to cap a six-under final round to go 19-under for the tournament – one shot better than Kyriacou who birdied the final hole. She would birdie the hole and go on to win the title with a dramatic 18th hole eagle to win by a single stroke. CNN —Rapper, reality TV star, and entrepreneur Flavor Flav has joined the US women’s water polo team in the pool for a splash about ahead of this summer’s Olympics. The musician donned swim shorts and an official USA Water Polo cap – removing his trademark clock medallion poolside – as he chanted “USA, USA” before getting into the water on Tuesday. Flav, who recently signed a sponsorship deal to be the “official Hype Man for USA Water Polo Women’s and Men’s National Teams,” said he felt like an Olympian wearing the cap. “It’s great because what water polo needs, and what a lot of these niche sports need, is someone to open the door to our sport. Like other sports, water polo can struggle to attract audiences outside the spotlight of the Olympics, which only come around once every four years.
