CNN —President Joe Biden welcomed National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) champion NY/NJ Gotham FC to the White House on Monday, the first time in the league’s history that a team has received the invite. Krieger, who earned more than a century of national team caps, won the NWSL title with Gotham FC in her last season as an active player. “Reflecting on my career, I recall times when women’s soccer lacked coverage and support,” she said. It won the inaugural Women’s Professional Soccer championship in 2009 and was a founding member of the NWSL in 2013. Gotham FC won its first NWSL championship in November last year, defeating OL Reign 2-1 in the final.

CNN —The long-awaited official hire of former Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino as the new head coach of the US men’s national soccer team (USMNT) has finally come to fruition. Pochettino represents a significant get for the US and will bring a wealth of top-level coaching experience to the team. CNN —Gregg Berhalter has been fired as the head coach of the United States men’s national soccer team following the squad’s Copa America elimination, the US Soccer Federation announced on Wednesday. Berhalter, initially hired in 2018, led the team to the knockout stage of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. In June 2023 he was given a new contract that was to run through the conclusion of the 2026 World Cup. The poor performance piled pressure on Berhalter, with critics questioning whether he still was the right person to lead the team heading into the 2026 World Cup. CNN —The US Soccer Federation and the Mexican Football Federation have withdrawn their joint bid to host the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, the two organizations announced on Monday. The announcement of the winning 2027 bid will take place at the 74th FIFA Congress in May. CNN has reached out to FIFA for response to the announcement from the US and Mexico federations. “Hosting a World Cup tournament is a huge undertaking – and having additional time to prepare allows us to maximize its impact across the globe,” US Soccer President Cindy Parlow Cone said in a statement. The inaugural FIFA Club World Cup will take place in the country in 2025; the FIFA Men’s World Cup will be coming to North America in 2026 co-hosted by the US, Mexico and Canada; and in 2028, the summer Olympics will take place in Los Angeles.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — SoFi Stadium will begin work Monday on renovations to increase the size of its playing field area in preparation for hosting eight matches during the 2026 World Cup. “It's really just changing pre-cast concrete in the corners of the stadium to a more retractable system,” Demoff said Sunday. SoFi also will have a temporary grass field for the World Cup in place of its usual artificial turf. The changes that we will make to the stadium were always contemplated for the World Cup. Although the Los Angeles-area World Cup organizers didn't get the final, only AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, will host more total matches than SoFi.

CNN —Live sports is coming to Max. Discovery announced Tuesday it will launch a live sports tier on its Max streaming service on October 5 that will give subscribers access to more than 300 live games a year. The “Bleacher Report Sports Add-On” will include a package of live sports, including MLB, NHL, NBA, NCAA Men’s March Madness, and US Soccer events, WBD said. The addition of live sports arrives in time for the Major League Baseball playoffs, with the National League Division Series kicking off on October 7. WBD announced last month that it also plans to bring live news to the Max platform with a new CNN Max service starting on September 27.
