CNN —American gymnast Jordan Chiles and the US Olympic team may very well feel like protagonists in a Franz Kafka novel, as they find themselves trapped in an increasingly surreal scenario while attempting to reclaim her bronze medal. Dr. Hamid G. Gharavi, Philippe Sands and Song Lu sat on the panel, of which Gharavi was the president, according to CAS. Gharavi’s resume, linked on CAS’ website, lists multiple legal cases in which he has represented Romania in arbitration cases. New York CNN —The CEO of Delta Air Lines lashed out at cyber security firm CrowdStrike and software provider Microsoft for the computer problems that resulted in a five-day service meltdown he said cost the airline $500 million. Free consulting advice to help us,” said Ed Bastian in an interview Wednesday on CNBC, when asked about how much compensation CrowdStrike and Microsoft have offered the company. And he blasted CrowdStrike for the flawed software update at Delta and hundreds of other companies around the globe that caused widespread computer outages on July 19. “If you’re going to have priority access to the Delta ecosystem in terms of technology, you’ve got to test this stuff,” Bastian said. CNN —Athing Mu’s hopes of defending her 800-meter title at the Paris Olympics ended in heartbreaking fashion on Monday as she fell to the floor at the US track and field trials. The trio of Nia Atkins, who won in a time of 1:57.36, Allie Wilson, and Juliette Whittaker completed the podium to make the Olympic team. Mu’s fall underlined the sometimes brutal nature of the US Olympic trials, which dictate that only the top three finishers will make the team for an individual event, regardless of an athlete’s pedigree and past results. Despite her lack of races due to a lingering hamstring issue, Mu appeared in good shape at the trials, winning her semifinal in a time of 1:58.84. “I don’t know if my season’s over yet,” Wilson told reporters on Monday.

CNN —United States sprinter Erriyon Knighton has been cleared to compete at the Olympic Games after an independent arbitrator determined his failed drug test was “more likely than not” caused by contaminated meat. Knighton, the 2023 World Championship 200m silver medalist, tested positive for a metabolite of trenbolone during an out-of-competition drug test on March 26 and was provisionally suspended on April 12, the US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) said in a statement. CNN has reached out to Knighton via the US Olympic Team for comment on the decision. “We did what the rules require us to do in all positive cases,” USADA CEO Travis Tygart said in the statement. Knighton became the youngest American since Jim Ryun in 1964 to make a US Olympic team when he qualified for the Tokyo Olympics, according to AP, eventually finishing fourth in the 200m.

Her painful backstory was a good part of the reason why I, like many other gymnastics fans, pulled hard for Gabby Douglas when she announced her return to elite gymnastics. Had she made the team, Douglas would have been the oldest American woman to compete in gymnastics at the Olympics since 1952. Ross, a teammate of Douglas’ in London, was the youngest member of the “Fierce Five” that won team gold at that Olympics. And if she can’t make the national championships, she can’t make the US Olympic team. Dominique Moceanu, the diminutive, dynamic athlete on the “Magnificent Seven” 1996 Olympic gymnastics team, paralleled Douglas’ journey in some ways.

CNN —Three-time Olympic champion Gabby Douglas’ return to competitive gymnastics – originally set for this weekend – will have to wait, after the American tested positive for Covid-19. Douglas last competed almost eight years ago at the Rio Olympics, but announced her intention to return to the sport in an Instagram post last year. “I was so excited to get back out on the competition floor, but unfortunately, I just tested positive for Covid. PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Joel Embiid’s timeline to return to the Philadelphia 76ers is still unclear following knee surgery. His availability this summer for the U.S. Olympic team is just as murky. Kerr even hoped to meet up with Embiid -- out at least four weeks, likely much longer -- before the Warriors played the 76ers on Wednesday night. “Our fingers are crossed he’ll be healthy this summer and able to play,” Kerr said. “It looks like this summer would be a little bit of a last hurrah for some of the guys on the team,” Kerr said.

CNN —The US Olympic Marathon Trials will be held in Orlando, Florida, on Saturday – an opportunity for runners to book a place at the Games in Paris later this year. Here’s what you need to know ahead of what is regarded as one of the most exciting, unpredictable events on the American running calendar. Conner Mantz and Clayton Young are the only two men to run under the Olympic standard time of 2:08:10, both having done so at last year’s Chicago Marathon. Defending trials champion Aliphine Tuliamuk is looking to make back-to-back Olympics having run 2:24:37 in Boston last year. In previous marathon trials, it was simply the top three men and women who qualified for the US Olympic team.

Kharlan’s disqualification threw into sharp relief the political and organizational jeopardy that France and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) is facing ahead of the Games. So far, no decision has been taken on Russian and Belarusian athletes’ participation at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The opening ceremony is already uniquely French in nature with the Games set to be centered around the Seine, the river running through the city. Organizers also say that the Paris Games “finance themselves,” claiming that 96% of the budget comes from private investment. Next year’s Olympic Games are set to start on July 26 and run until August 11.
