AdvertisementRussia's retaking territory in Kursk, but efforts to drive the Ukrainian forces out of the country will likely only get more difficult. Ukrainian troops invaded the Kursk region in southwestern Russia in August, and at one point, they held roughly 500 square miles of Russian territory. Russia's response to the shock assault was slow, but a larger effort to drive the Ukrainians out is now underway. Michael Bohnert, a warfare expert at RAND Corporation, told BI Ukraine doesn't have to defend Russian cities. Russia's military is larger than Ukraine's, which means that the more resources Russia uses, the harder it will be to defend.

Western sanctions have impacted Russia's production of Su-57 fighter jets, according to a research group. "There's no question that Western sanctions are having an impact on Russia's ability to generate its most sophisticated military systems," Spurling told BI. Western sanctions and the war in Ukraine have damaged Russia's economy, but their exact impact is difficult to quantify.

The strike led to fears of a potential escalation in Russian attacks on the Black Sea grain corridor. But according to the UK MOD, it was likely an error caused by poor procedures and aging munition. Tonight, Russia launched a strike on an ordinary civilian vessel in the Black Sea right after it left Ukrainian territorial waters. Related storiesSince its exit from the Black Sea grain initiative, Russia's attacks on Ukrainian naval export abilities have been largely limited to striking ports, and — it's widely believed — dropping naval mines. Despite the potential for economic warfare, Russia has good reason to avoid escalating the threat to shipping in the Black Sea, Ambrey wrote.

Ukraine struck three ammunition depots deep inside Russia this month, causing significant damage. According to UK intel, the strikes caused the largest loss of Russian and North Korean ammo in the war. AdvertisementRecent Ukrainian strikes on Russian arms depots caused the largest loss of Russian and North Korean ammunition recorded so far in the Ukraine war, according to British intelligence. "The total tonnage of ammunition destroyed across the three sites represents the largest loss of Russian and North Korean-supplied ammunition during the war," the MOD said. It said that the "major" strikes in close succession showed that Russia is still struggling against Ukrainian drones used in deep-strike operations inside Russia.

Related storiesRussia's losses have risen recently as Russian troops continue to suffer from deficiencies in training. That figure is more than the amount of territory Russia has seized in Ukraine so far this year. A pair of Ukrainian soldiers walk in the Ukrainian-controlled city of Sudzha in Russia's Kursk region. But he said there's also a danger that Ukraine's forces could get overextended and "get too widely spaced that the Russians can take advantage of it." Read previewUkraine's sea drone and missile attacks have left Russia's Black Sea Fleet headquarters at Sevastopol effectively useless and forced many of its ships to relocate to other locations, the head of the Ukrainian navy has said. The Sevastopol headquarters was the site of numerous key functions for the Black Sea Fleet, including training, repairs, and storing ammunition. Ukraine, which lost most of its traditional navy during the annexation of Crimea in 2014, has targeted Russia's Black Sea fleet with great success using sea drones , as well as hitting targets in occupied Crimea with US-made ATACMS missiles. Neizhpapa told Reuters that the expected delivery of F-16 fighter aircraft later this year would help Ukraine challenge Russia's dominance over the region. Here are a handful of them:1) CampaignsBy the time a presidential election takes place in the United States, the electorate will have already endured months of seemingly endless electioneering — with the entire election campaign process from candidacies and the campaign trail to the actual presidential election and inauguration taking up to two years. In the U.K., the time frame between a prime minister calling a general election to the actual vote is just six weeks. It sounds simple, and usually is, unless there's a "hung parliament" in which no political party wins a majority of seats. In the U.K., political advertising on TV and radio is not allowed, so U.K. voters are subjected to the somewhat quaint "party political broadcasts" during election campaigns. 6) 'Absurd' diversionsBritish political experts note that, unlike in the U.S., where broad political debates tend to remain the key focus, U.K. election campaigns can see more minor or fringe issues dominate the short election campaign.
