Sam's ClubGRAPEVINE, Texas — When shoppers walk into Sam's Club's newest store, they'll soon see a shiny blue Mercedes-Benz SUV, a sectional sofa and zero checkout lanes. Sam's ClubSince Walmart's founder Sam Walton opened the first Sam's Club in 1983, the membership-based club has become the more tech-savvy arm of its retail-behemoth parent. Nicholas said upon its reopening, the location will become a testing ground for Sam's Club's newest features and emerging technology. Sam's Club and Costco have roughly the same number of U.S. clubs, but Costco pulls in about twice as much annual revenue. Sam's Club also opened The Clubhouse in August, an approximately 37,000-square-foot office building across from the retailer's headquarters in Bentonville, Arkansas.

Tim Walz said he believes his rival for vice president, Sen. JD Vance of Ohio, wants to solve the nation’s immigration crisis, but he questioned whether former President Donald Trump really does. Vance acknowledged that Walz wants to solve the problem, too, but he questioned whether Vice President Kamala Harris really does. Vance said he and Walz “probably agree that we need to do better” on addressing gun violence. “I think Tim Walz agreed with JD Vance significantly more times in this debate. “Look, I’ve known Tim Walz 16 years, and that’s who he is,” Colorado Gov.

But many people are still wondering, what does a rate cut mean for my money? For those who’ve been waiting it out, the rate cut “will instill some hope in folks,” said Elizabeth Renter, senior economist at NerdWallet. Consider your (improved) debt repayment optionsThis week’s rate cut was good news for those struggling to unload themselves of credit card debt. They’re a popular savings instrument when interest rates are high, and as most economists expected, CD rates have already started declining since the Fed’s interest rate cut. “This rate cut is not something that should trigger you to go make any drastic changes to the overall direction of your portfolio,” he added.

The Food and Drug Administration’s “hands-off approach” to food additives, including those found in ultraprocessed foods and energy drinks, may allow unsafe ingredients to enter the nation’s food supply, according to the authors of an editorial published Thursday. While food manufacturers can request an FDA review of new ingredients before they are added to products — and they sometimes do — they are not required to do so. From 1990 to 2010, an estimated 1,000 substances were labeled GRAS by manufacturers and were used without notifying the agency, Pomeranz said, citing earlier research. Since then, she added, there have likely been many more ingredients added to the nation’s food supply without the FDA’s oversight. “We have no idea how many substances are in the food supply based on this self-GRAS mechanism,” Pomeranz said.

Home prices may have hit a new high, but the real estate market is showing signs of weakness that could help buyers negotiate a lower price on a house. For the four weeks ending June 30, homes sold for 0.3% below asking price, according to a recent report by online real estate brokerage Redfin. But if anything, it's a momentary correction in a real estate market that still favors sellers. That's because the Federal Reserve is expected to announce federal funds rate cuts that will help lower mortgage rates before the end of the year. Considering that many would-be buyers have been priced out of the market by high mortgage rates, lowering rates would increase the number of potential buyers able to afford a home.

Mike Segar | ReutersBEIJING — Chinese authorities this week announced new policy for supporting venture capital, raising hopes for faster approvals of initial public offerings in the near future. The new policy included a section on expanding exit channels for venture capital, with an emphasis on supporting companies with technological breakthroughs. Investors, especially those who put U.S. dollars into China-based venture capital funds, have preferred IPOs in the U.S. as the largest and most liquid market. Separately, the U.S. has increased its scrutiny of U.S. capital going into China, especially military-related entities. The China Securities Regulatory Commission has increased fines for misleading investors and clarified requirements for overseas IPOs.

Singapore's Shanti Pereira of Singapore celebrates winning the women's 200m final athletics event during the 19th Asian Games at Hangzhou Olympic Sports Centre on Oct. 2, 2023. The 28-year-old track-and-field athlete — often referred to as Singapore's sprint queen — brought home a gold in the women's 200-meter race and silver in the 100-meter race at the Asian Games. As a result, she could not progress beyond the Asian Games heats that year. Three weeks before the Southeast Asian Games, she finally snapped out of that downward spiral. The same year, Pereira broke the national record in the 100-m sprint six times and 200-m race four times.

January Was World's Warmest on Record, EU Scientists Say
  + stars: | 2024-02-07 | by ( Feb. | At P.M. | ) www.usnews.com   time to read: +2 min
By Kate AbnettBRUSSELS (Reuters) - The world just experienced its hottest January on record, continuing a run of exceptional heat fuelled by climate change, the European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) said on Thursday. Last month surpassed the previous warmest January, which occurred in 2020, in C3S's records going back to 1950. Every month since June has been the world's hottest on record, compared with the corresponding month in previous years. "Rapid reductions in greenhouse gas emissions are the only way to stop global temperatures increasing," she said. Still, average global sea surface temperatures last month were the highest for any January on record.

TravelPerkBarcelona-based startup TravelPerk, which helps automate corporate travel and expenses, has raised $104 million in fresh funding from Japanese tech investing giant SoftBank and a flood of other names, to invest in artificial intelligence development and new products. SoftBank invested $70 million in TravelPerk's latest round, which the company said was an extension of its "D-1" funding round. The fundraising round shows SoftBank is placing a major bet on a company driving disruption in corporate travel through new technologies, such as AI — which has seen significant buzz since the November 2022 launch of OpenAI's ChatGPT. Whereas many travel agents operate on low single digits gross margins, Meir says that TravelPerk's profit margin stood at 60% last year. TravelPerk competes with American Express, BCD Travel, SAP Concur and Navan in the corporate travel management space.

COVID-19 is leading hospital admissions among the respiratory viruses, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Last week, 25 U.S. states had high or very high levels for respiratory illnesses with fever, cough and other symptoms. Since the beginning of October, there have been at least 16 million illnesses, 180,000 hospitalizations, and 11,000 deaths from flu so far this season. With vaccination rates low, what can you do to protect yourself from respiratory viruses, including influenza, COVID-19 and RSV? That’s important to see if you need one of the medicines that can help prevent severe illness: Paxlovid for COVID-19 and Tamiflu for flu.

Last month smashed through the previous October temperature record, from 2019, by a massive margin, the EU's Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) said. The record-breaking October means 2023 is now "virtually certain" to be the warmest year recorded, C3S said in a statement. "When we combine our data with the IPCC, then we can say that this is the warmest year for the last 125,000 years," Burgess said. The only other time before October a month breached the temperature record by such a large margin was in September 2023. Michael Mann, a climate scientist at University of Pennsylvania, said: "Most El Nino years are now record-breakers, because the extra global warmth of El Nino adds to the steady ramp of human-caused warming."

For Lachlan Murdoch, this moment has been a long time coming. On Thursday, his father Rupert Murdoch announced that in November he'll step down as the head of his two media companies: News Corp. and Fox Corp. Lachlan will become the chair of News Corp. while remaining chief executive and chair at Fox Corp., the parent of Fox News Channel.
