Hong Kong CNN —Heavy rains and floods from Typhoon Gaemi caused at least 30 deaths and left 35 people missing across eight towns in the southern Chinese province of Hunan, state-run news agency Xinhua reported on Thursday, citing local authorities. On Thursday, rescue teams reached eight towns that had been cut off from the outside world since last Sunday, due to destroyed infrastructure and power grids. Typhoon Gaemi initially made landfall in China on the evening of Thursday July 25, with winds approaching 110 kph (70 mph). The storm previously caused torrential flooding in Taiwan, with rainfall in five townships totaling over 1,285mm (50 inches). CNN —Some 5,000 people were rescued from flood-hit areas along North Korea’s border with China over the weekend in efforts supervised by leader Kim Jong Un, the country’s state media reported Monday. At least 15 people died following a rain-triggered landslide in central China’s Hunan Province, Chinese state media Xinhua said Sunday. In China’s Liaoning province, across the border from North Korea’s North Pyongan, more than 45,000 people were evacuated from their homes as of Sunday morning as heavy rains hit the region, according to Xinhua.

Typhoon Gaemi was weakening as it churned toward mainland China on Thursday, hours after the storm’s powerful winds and heavy rains submerged roads and forced the suspension of hundreds of flights in nearby Taiwan. The tropical cyclone made landfall on Taiwan on Wednesday night with wind speeds equivalent to those of a Category 3 hurricane in the Atlantic Ocean, according to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center, a U.S. Navy forecasting organization. As of Thursday the storm had killed at least six people in Taiwan and the Philippines. Gaemi was moving across the Taiwan Strait early Thursday afternoon. It was expected to make landfall in the southeastern Chinese province of Fujian in the late afternoon or evening with the force of a Category 1 hurricane.

A tanker carrying 1.4 million liters of industrial fuel capsized off the coast of Philippines, leading to one casualty and a vast oil spill, local authorities said Thursday. The vessel had departed Limay and was bound for fellow Philippines' port of Iloilo, according to data from MarineTraffic.com. The Coast Guard said it is now addressing the oil spill and intends to finish siphoning the fuel from the sunken tanker to prevent further spreading within seven days. The Philippine Coast Guard Aviation Command separately alerted that it had deployed air assets on a search-and-rescue mission to the sunken tanker. The Philippines-flagged tanker MT Princess Empress suffered engine troubles in rough seas and sank with its load of 800,000 litres of industrial fuel oil off the central Oriental Mindoro province.

Typhoon Gaemi is expected to strengthen into a super typhoon before making landfall on Taiwan’s northeastern coast Wednesday evening. Heavy rain hit Taiwan ahead of the storm’s landfall on Wednesday, with the island’s mountainous areas already reporting rainfall approaching 200 millimeters (8 inches). Typhoon Gaemi is strengthening in Pacific waters that have been at their warmest temperatures on record. Typhoon Gaemi was approaching Taiwan with heavy rains and powerful winds on Wednesday, after officials on the island said that they had closed schools and canceled planned military exercises. Gaemi had maximum sustained winds of 138 miles per hour on Wednesday morning, according to the U.S. Navy’s Joint Typhoon Warning Center. That would make it a Category 4 hurricane on the five-tier scale that is used to measure tropical cyclones in the Atlantic Ocean. Gaemi was forecast to make landfall on Taiwan’s northeastern coast on Wednesday night in a slightly weakened state, the island’s Central Weather Administration said. After moving away from the island on Friday, it was expected to continue heading northwest toward the coast of southeastern China.
