The US and some of its adversaries are making rapid progress on AI weapons, with lots of controversy in the mix.
Last year, DoD updated its directive on autonomy in weapons systems, which was originally published back in 2012.

Other nations, however, had hoped to use the UN as a platform to propose restrictions and limit how autonomous weapons operate.
