The fire began burning in the Waikato wetland on October 21, 2024. But even before the blaze, the Waikato wetland, like many other unique habitats in New Zealand, was at risk due to environmental degradation and the climate crisis. But when these carbon sinks come under threat, that stored carbon can be released back into the environment. The mother of 3-year-old Wisconsin boy Elijah Vue and her partner were charged Thursday with counts of child neglect and child abuse that resulted in the boy’s death, the Manitowoc County prosecutor said. “Elijah was a young boy whose life was tragically cut short,” Manitowoc County District Attorney Jacalyn LaBre said at a news conference. Two Rivers Police DepartmentThe boy’s mother, Katrina Baur, is charged with chronic neglect of a child where the consequence is death; child neglect; and obstructing an officer, LaBre said. Human remains found on private property are those of 3-year-old boy who went missing in February, authorities in Wisconsin announced Friday. Two Rivers Police Chief Benjamin Meinnert said the remains, which were tested forensically and determined to be those of Elijah Vue, were found only three miles northwest from where the child had been reported missing. “What started out as a search for a missing boy is now a death investigation,” he said. Two Rivers Police DepartmentElijah disappeared from an apartment in Two Rivers, about 90 miles north of Milwaukee. CNN —Thousands of people have been evacuated in southeast China after heavy rains hammered the region over the weekend, triggering floods and deadly landslides, authorities and state media said Monday. As of Monday morning, more than 10,000 people were evacuated in Meizhou, the hardest flood-hit city in Guangdong province. Those warnings were underscored in April, when deadly floods submerged parts of Guangdong after rain poured for multiple days. Four people were killed in a series of landslides in the coastal province, CCTV reported Monday. China has been grappling with extreme weather this month as heavy rains inundate the south while severe drought and record temperatures scorch the north.

CNN —Named after the dense mats of hair on their front claws, Chinese mitten crabs are intimidating creatures. Scientists across the continent are looking for ways to reduce the mitten crab population, and in doing so protect the native ecosystems being destroyed by the invasive species. Schoelynck says that scientists in Europe have reported crabs that are a hybrid of both the Chinese and Japanese species of mitten crabs. While mitten crabs are a seasonal delicacy in China, Schoelynck says that they have little meat and therefore aren’t popular in the European market. However, the crabs collected in one of the Belgium traps go to a local zoo to be used as animal feed, he says.

These are just the first grim visions of extreme drought sweeping across Brazil’s Amazon. Raimundo Silva do Carmo, 67, makes his living as a fisherman, but these days has been struggling to simply find water. Like most rural residents in Brazil's Amazon, do Carmo typically retrieves water untreated from the biome's abundant waterways. The drought has affected most of the main rivers in the Amazon, the world’s largest basin, which accounts for 20% of the planet’s fresh water.
