Jen Walton, a storm chaser from Denver, has already seen the new film twice and loved many of the nods to the original movie, the accuracy of the tornado science, and the appreciation for storm chasers. But eventually, she got over her fear and has been chasing storms for the last six years. AdvertisementIt mostly happens in Texas and Oklahoma, where storm chasing is the most popular, she said. Many may not remember the 2013 El Reno storm when four storm chasers were killed, she said. That's why Girls Who Chase, the initiative Walton started to support women in STEM fields, offers Storm Chasing 101.

CNN —Amid celebration around the release of his new movie “Twisters,” Glen Powell took a moment to honor an acting “legend” who came before him. The “Hit Man” star posted a picture of himself alongside late actor Bill Paxton – who starred in the 1996 film “Twister” – on X on Friday. “As we release Twisters into the world today, I just wanted to look up and tip my hat to the legend that is Bill Paxton,” Powell wrote in the caption. Powell and Paxton costarred in the 2013 film “Red Wing,” which also featured the late Luke Perry. They joined Luke Combs on stage at his performance at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey to “shotgun” a few beers.

We got cows.”One friend said she watched it every single time she happened upon it on cable. As Janet Maslin wrote in The Times when the movie came out, “Somehow ‘Twister’ stays as uptempo and exuberant as a roller-coaster ride, neatly avoiding the idea of real danger.”This week, “Twisters,” a sequel to “Twister,” directed by Lee Isaac Chung, arrived in theaters. I didn’t have a deep-rooted relationship with the original film, but, fresh off my positive viewing experience, I didn’t feel like I needed another chapter. Why can’t we just make one good thing and then make another new thing that’s also good?

A Trip Into Tornado Alley With America’s Most Obsessive Storm ChaserOn a clear morning in late May, Reed Timmer began the day at home in Lexington, Okla., studying the latest update from the National Weather Service’s storm-prediction center. A month into his freshman year, he went storm chasing, and saw his first tornado. He went on to begin his Ph.D. studies, but the allure of storm chasing waylaid his academic career. Timmer insists that chasing tornadoes is safe, though others’ experience suggests a different conclusion. In 2013, while he was pursuing the El Reno tornado in Oklahoma, four other chasers died in the storm.

The tornadoes that ripped through Rock County on Feb. 8 killed some cattle and hit 30 homes, officials said. One confirmed tornado near Evansville was a “high end” F2, the weather service said. Those tornadoes are described as “significant,” with winds in this particular twister topping out at 135 mph (220 kph). Three different prosecutors want to put Donald J. Trump on trial in four different cities next year, all before Memorial Day and in the midst of his presidential campaign. A morass of delays, court backlogs and legal skirmishes awaits, interviews with nearly two dozen current and former prosecutors, judges, legal experts and people involved in the Trump cases show. Some experts predicted that only one or two trials will take place next year; one speculated that none of the four Trump cases will start before the election. And between the extensive legal arguments that must take place before a trial can begin — not to mention that the trials themselves could last weeks or months — there are simply not enough boxes on the calendar to squeeze in all the former president’s trials. “While each of the cases seems at this point to be strong, there’s only so much you can ask a defendant to do at one time.”

Last October, when Roger Waters brought his “This Is Not a Drill” tour through Austin, Texas, he also took the time to record a nearly three-hour appearance on the podcast “The Joe Rogan Experience.” During the episode, Rogan said he had to ask Waters — the former lead lyricist, bassist and co-lead vocalist for Pink Floyd — about the synchronicity that arises from watching “The Wizard of Oz” while listening to “The Dark Side of the Moon.”This phenomenon is sometimes called “The Dark Side of the Rainbow”: If you start the album at just the right time, the music and lyrics uncannily align with the movie’s visuals. Some coincidences are lyrical, as when Dorothy runs away from home at the line “No one told you when to run.” Some are tonal, as when the tornado sequence seems practically choreographed to Clare Torry’s wordless vocals in “The Great Gig in the Sky” — rising to a frenzy as the twister rolls in and then shifting to dreaminess just as Dorothy is knocked unconscious. Charlie Savage, who wrote the first article about the phenomenon as a summer intern at The Journal Gazette in his hometown, Fort Wayne, Ind., looks back at the discovery he made known when he was 19. ◆ ◆ ◆Written and narrated by Sheryl Gay Stolberg
