Officials in Tulsa, Oklahoma, announced the creation of a new commission to recommend how reparations can be made for a 1921 massacre that destroyed a thriving Black community in the city. Both reports called for financial reparations, which Tulsa Mayor G.T. The program would be for survivors of the massacre as well as descendants of victims and other residents of north Tulsa, where the massacre occurred. She praised Bynum for establishing the commission and said reparations can include all items listed, though she strongly supports financial payments. In June, the Oklahoma Supreme Court dismissed a lawsuit by the last two known massacre survivors, Viola Fletcher, 110, and Lessie Benningfield Randle, 109, that sought restitution for the destruction.

Oklahoma City AP —A third set of remains with a gunshot wound has been found at a Tulsa cemetery in the search for graves of victims of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre, according to a state official. “We have exhumed him, he is in the forensic lab and undergoing analysis,” on-site at Tulsa’s Oaklawn Cemetery, Stackelbeck said. The discovery comes nearly a month after the first identification of remains previously exhumed during the search for massacre victims were identified as World War I veteran C.L. Forensic anthropologist Phoebe Stubblefield said no gunshot wound was found in Daniel’s remains, but said the remains were fragmented and a cause of death could not be determined. The remains exhumed during the current search are among 40 graves found, Stackelbeck said, and meet the criteria for how massacre victims were buried, based on newspaper articles at the time, death certificates and funeral home records.

Ex-Sen. Jim Inhofe has died, McConnell says

CNN —Former US Sen. Jim Inhofe, a former chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee who was one of the most vocal climate change deniers in the US Senate, has died, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell announced on Tuesday. Inhofe, 89, served in the US Senate from 1994 until he retired in 2023. “The people he served, a group much larger than the proud residents of the Sooner State, were better for it,” McConnell said in a statement. His relentless advocacy for American energy dominance unlocked new prosperity across the country. “If we wanted the government to work for the people, not against the people, it was up to us to make a change,” Inhofe said at the time.

Bishop Carlton Pearson died Sunday night in hospice care in Tulsa due to cancer, said his agent, Will Bogle. Pearson was shunned by other evangelical leaders, branded a heretic and later became a United Church of Christ minister. Pearson ran unsuccessfully for Tulsa mayor in 2002, a defeat he blamed on public reaction to his teachings. Pearson in 2000 was among a group of 30 clergy who advised then President-elect George W. Bush on faith-based social programs. Pearson is survived by his mother, a son, a daughter and his former wife, Bogle said.

Another 17 unmarked adult burials were found at Tulsa's Oaklawn Cemetery as the city continues its efforts to find the unidentified victims of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre. Experts then found another five graves, Oklahoma State Archaeologist Kary Stackelbeck said in an update Monday. Burned remains of the Greenwood District after the Tulsa Race Massacre in June 1921. On June 1, 1921, white rioters burned and looted Greenwood. Bynum launched the investigation after oral reports indicated that there are mass graves in the city.
