CNN —Thomas Tuchel has been announced by the English FA as the next head coach of the England men’s football team, three months after Gareth Southgate resigned from the role. This will be Tuchel’s first appointment in international football. He has previously taken charge of Borussia Dortmund, Paris Saint-Germain and Premier League side Chelsea, guiding the Blues to the UEFA Champions League title in 2021, before managing Bayern Munich in Germany. Despite high expectations, England finished runner-up at back-to-back European Championships under Southgate, while also reaching the semifinals and quarterfinals of the past two World Cups. Tuchel will be tasked with guiding England to the next World Cup in 2026, jointly hosted by the US, Canada and Mexico, with hopes of winning the men’s team its first major international title in 60 years.

CNN —Some Arsenal fans might have been forgiven for waking up in a cold sweat in the nights leading up to Tuesday’s Champions League quarterfinal first leg against Bayern Munich. The 30-year-old became the fastest player to score 20 Bundesliga goals, reaching the landmark in just 14 matches, well ahead of Uwe Seeler’s previous record of 21. He also has four hat-tricks to his name, something no player had previously achieved in their first Bundesliga season. Arsenal fans thought Kane should have been shown a red card in the second half. With Bayern fans banned from the match due as punishment for throwing flares onto the pitch during their side’s win against Lazio in the previous round, you could hear a pin drop inside the Emirates.

CNN —Thomas Tuchel will relinquish his post as Bayern Munich head coach at the end of the season, the club announced on Wednesday. Tuchel, who was hired as head coach of the German powerhouse in March 2023, will leave a year earlier than his original contract end date of June 2025. The Bavarians also lost 1-0 to Italian club Lazio in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 clash. “Our goal is to pursue a new footballing direction with a new head coach for the 2024/25 season. Tuchel’s departure at the end of the season comes amid widespread speculation that Bayern are potentially interested in Leverkusen’s highly-rated coach Xabi Alonso.

Bayern Munich will not take this well. The club is unlikely to shrug its shoulders at being eliminated from not only the Champions League but the German cup, too, in the space of a few days. Thomas Tuchel, freshly installed as Nagelsmann’s replacement, should be safe for now, but all around him will be a blur of change. There was a sense, watching Manchester City hold Bayern at bay on Wednesday evening, of two clubs moving in opposite directions. Like Juventus and Barcelona before it, Bayern Munich will at some point bow to, or be bowed by, England’s economic primacy.
