“There’s no white knight coming,” a federal law enforcement official told NBC News, speaking on the condition of anonymity to describe the posture of federal authorities in the coming weeks, after Election Day. Law enforcement officials across the country said they believe the 2024 election will have a more sustained drumbeat of partisan rhetoric and disinformation than the 2020 election. The FBI has also set up a National Election Command Post at headquarters specifically to focus on election threats, as is standard practice in an election year. Two law enforcement officials expressed some concern that a federal response to any serious election issues could be chaotic and involve a “hodgepodge” of different state, local and federal law enforcement agencies and local election entities. Four other current and former law enforcement sources said they worried that disinformation and conspiracy theories could affect some segments of the law enforcement community, especially in parts of the country where Trump has significant support.

America PAC has been tasked with much of the pro-Trump canvassing operation as his campaign focuses its efforts on a more limited effort targeting so-called low-propensity voters. “I know it’s been flagged for America PAC that this has been transpiring,” an operative formerly on the effort said. As some of that data spilled into public view last month, an operative close to the effort said: “All hell has broken loose” inside the PAC. Through late October, America PAC had spent upward of $54 million on Blitz’s services, according to Federal Election Commission filings — more than the PAC has on the three other vendors combined. America PAC ended its relationships this summer with two other prominent GOP-aligned canvassing firms that were knocking on doors as part of its effort.

Major pro-Trump influencers worked for a company the DOJ alleges was funded by Russia. Prosecutors say Tenet Media got nearly $10 million from Russia to spread its message in the US. AdvertisementAfter the Department of Justice accused a US media company of being bankrolled by Russia, several conservative influencers who've worked for the company denied any knowledge of Russian involvement. In an indictment this week, the DOJ said an unnamed Tenessee firm took almost $10 million from the Russian state media company RT. The aim, according to the DOJ, was to "create and distribute content to US audiences with hidden Russian government messaging."

Donald Trump isn’t on TikTok. The social-media platform, though still regarded as a hub for Democratic voices and liberal causes, has seen an uptick of right-wing, pro-Trump influencers since the last presidential election. Pearson, a social-media influencer with nearly 149,000 followers on TikTok who co-chairs the Republican National Committee’s youth advisory council. But TikTok still presents challenges as the former president seeks to regain the White House. And Republican politicians — including Mr. Trump — have largely resisted joining the platform, with many having vocally opposed it.
