Biden administration officials said Wednesday they have no current plans to authorize a stockpiled bird flu vaccine, despite an escalating outbreak among livestock in the U.S. and at least 58 human infections across seven states. Almost all bird flu cases in the U.S. have been in farmworkers who have had contact with infected animals — either dairy cows or poultry — aside from a patient in Missouri and a child in California. The federal government has two bird flu vaccine candidates available in limited quantities in the nation’s Strategic National Stockpile, though they need to be authorized by the Food and Drug Administration before they can be used. Still, some public health experts believe the time for vaccination is now, particularly for farmworkers. In 1976, at the first signs of an H1N1 swine flu outbreak in the U.S., public health officials quickly initiated a nationwide vaccine campaign.

Tasked with coordinating Trump’s core campaign promise of a mass deportation, Homan has used the appearances to begin detailing how the efforts might take shape and how the administration will move its plan forward. Homan has not been as direct as Trump has about how he sees the military’s role in the operation he will oversee. Tom Homan, who does not have to face Senate confirmation, has been going on Fox News and other conservative outlets to talk about Trump's plans on immigration. Funding mass deportationA major outstanding question, however, remains how the incoming Trump administration would fund a deportation scheme at that large a scale. “For those governors and mayors who are saying they’re going to stop Tom Homan, they’re going to stop President Trump: Shame on you,” Homan said on Fox News on Nov. 20.

Trump faces tightening web of US adversariesBut Trump has stiff challenges in Syria and beyond. Trump may have to quickly decide whether to maintain a deployment of hundreds of US troops in Syria to fight any resurgence of ISIS. And America’s problems with Russia, North Korea and Iran are compounded by the loose but expanding strategic synergy between the trio and China. And he announced the airstrikes by B-52 bombers, F-15 fighter jets and A-10 aircraft against ISIS targets in central Syria. The FBI recently told Kash Patel, President-elect Donald Trump’s pick to be the bureau’s next director, that he was the target of an Iranian cyberattack, two senior law enforcement officials told NBC News. The exact timing of the cyberattack is unclear, but it was before Trump named Patel as his choice to be the next head of the FBI, the officials said. It’s unclear whether they actually accessed the communications and, if so, how much data was viewed or stolen, the sources said. Current FBI Director Christopher Wray, whose 10-year term doesn’t expire until 2027, would have to resign or be fired for Patel to take over the position, which requires Senate confirmation. Three Iranian operatives were charged in September with hacking Trump’s presidential campaign as part of what the Justice Department said at the time was an effort to undermine the U.S. election.

CNN —Kash Patel, President-elect Donald Trump’s pick to run the FBI, was recently informed by the bureau that he had been targeted as part of an Iranian hack, two sources familiar with the matter told CNN. Members of Trump’s inner circle have been targeted by foreign hackers in recent months. Blanche was the second Trump attorney believed to be targeted by foreign hackers. CNN reported in August that attorney Lindsey Halligan was targeted as part of a separate Iranian hacking effort. In June, Iranian hackers breached the email account of longtime Trump ally Roger Stone and used the account to try to break into a senior Trump campaign official’s email, investigators have said.

Covid’s rampage through the country’s nursing homes killed more than 172,000 residents and spurred the biggest industry reform in decades: a mandate that homes employ a minimum number of nurses. But with President-elect Donald Trump’s return to the White House, the industry is ramping up pressure to kill that requirement before it takes effect, leaving thousands of residents in homes too short-staffed to provide proper care. The nursing home industry has been marshaling opposition for months among congressional Republicans — and even some Democrats — to overrule the Biden administration’s mandate. Two industry groups, the American Health Care Association and LeadingAge, have sued to overturn the regulation, and 20 Republican state attorneys general have filed their own challenge. Consumer advocates, industry officials and independent researchers agree that the incoming administration is likely to rescind the rule, given the first Trump administration’s “patients over paperwork” campaign to remove “unnecessary, obsolete, or excessively burdensome health regulations on hospitals and other healthcare providers.” Among other things, Mr. Trump aided the industry by easing fines against homes that had been cited for poor care.

That western relocation was “wildly disruptive” and should serve as a “cautionary tale” for the incoming Trump administration, said Tracy Stone-Manning, the Biden administration’s BLM director. Project 2025, a conservative blueprint written by dozens of former Trump administration officials, recommended returning the BLM headquarters to the West. Most BLM staffers already worked in states outside of DC, but a disproportionate level of senior staffers worked in the nation’s capital. But an inspector general report later found that Trump administration officials had misled Congress in statements about the relocation. Future efforts to move federal offices out of DC could lead more federal workers to unionize.

But if Mr. Kennedy is confirmed to lead the Department of Health and Human Services, several of his key priorities may run counter to those of an administration with a game plan bent on deregulation. Mr. Trump’s choice for White House chief of staff, Susie Wiles, comes from a lobbying firm that represented the very industries that Mr. Kennedy hopes to disrupt. When it comes to tearing down corporate capture among the giants — Big Pharma, Big Ag, Big Food, among others — Mr. Kennedy’s ideas echo those of some of the incoming Trump administration’s loudest critics. Michelle ObamaMr. Kennedy, who recently criticized Mr. Trump’s penchant for fast food, has been clear about his plans to go after ultra-processed foods that contribute to the growing rates of diabetes and obesity in the United States. A key challenge for all of the Trump administration’s new public health leaders, the experts said, will be keeping politics out of science. CNN has reached out to Nesheiwat and Makary for comment and did not receive a response. Some said that could put them at odds with Kennedy, whom Trump has chosen for the nation’s top health post as HHS secretary. It doesn’t seem that he has much experience working in the field of public health,” said Castrucci, an epidemiologist who is president and CEO of the de Beaumont Foundation, a nonprofit focused on strengthening the US public health system. The Goldman Sachs analysis also described Trump’s tariff announcement as “more reminiscent of the first Trump administration, when such tariffs were announced as a negotiating tactic.” Trump ultimately declined to impose some of his proposed tariffs. The unprecedented policy required migrants to stay in Mexico for the duration of their immigration proceedings in the United States. On the campaign trail, he frequently pledged to use tariffs as a negotiating tool to bend China and North American countries’ policies to his will. His advisers have acknowledged privately that tariffs could be more urgently slapped on Canada and Mexico, as Trump seeks to fulfill his campaign pledge to renegotiate his own free trade agreement. But Lutnick added that Trump wouldn’t seek to slap price-raising tariffs on goods that aren’t made in the United States.

And it underscores frustrations with a tariff exclusion process launched during the first Trump administration that is often described as murky and messy. It’s not clear how or when those higher China tariffs will take effect – nor whether businesses will again have the opportunity to apply for exclusions. It’s true that analysts expect the Trump administration to generally be less hostile to mergers. Yet it’s also true that some Republicans – including some tapped to join the Trump administration – have been described as “Khanservatives” because they’ve called for tougher, not weaker, antitrust scrutiny. Earlier this year, Gaetz told NOTUS that the FCC chair’s work “inspired me” and he expressed hope she stays in power for a Trump administration. As Gaetz fights to survive a tough nomination process to be attorney general, Comcast dropped a bombshell in the media industry by spinning off MSNBC, CNBC, USA, Oxygen and other networks. “It’s hard not to look at the spinoff of CNBC and MSNBC as potentially a response to the new administration,” said Petro.

CNN —President-elect Donald Trump announced Sunday night that Tom Homan, who served as the acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement in his last administration, will be in charge of the nation’s borders. CNN reported earlier Sunday that Trump was expected to tap Homan to serve in a czar-like role. Immigration was a cornerstone of Trump’s 2024 campaign, and he repeatedly vowed to deport millions of undocumented immigrants. In a sign of his influence in Trump’s orbit, Homan spoke at the Republican National Convention in July. “You’re damn right.”A career law enforcement officer, Homan served as the public face of the first Trump administration’s aggressive efforts to step up immigration enforcement before retiring in 2018.

The exact number of people who could face deportation after arriving in the U.S. legally is not known, but it is estimated to be in the hundreds of thousands. Trump’s plan to end the two Biden programs comes as the president-elect’s promised plan to carry out mass deportations is taking clearer shape. The sources cautioned, though, that they may not be considered top priorities for deportation after Trump takes office, but could still be deported eventually. Since the migrants entered the U.S. legally, any attempt by Trump to deport them will likely be challenged in court by various groups. Trump used a similar policy at the end of his first term when the U.S. deported migrants from third countries to Guatemala.

The U.S. Capitol building November 6, the President-elect Donald Trump was declared the winner of the presidential election. GOP leaders have been dreaming of another major tax package, as many tax provisions are set to expire at the end of 2025. Remember: With Republicans winning control of the Senate, delivering on Trump’s agenda will come down to whether the GOP retains a majority in the House. Even with unified GOP control, there would be challenges ahead for Republicans. One issue is the political math: House Republicans believe if they do hold onto the majority, it won’t be by much.

Unlike Trump’s surprise win in 2016, House and Senate GOP leaders have been preparing for months for a possible GOP sweep.
