Amber Rose, an OnlyFans model, influencer and former girlfriend to rappers, took the stage at the Republican National Convention on Monday night sporting her platinum buzz cut and face tattoo. Ms. Rose, the author of a book titled “How to Be a Bad Bitch,” told the overwhelmingly white crowd that she once believed “left-wing propaganda that Donald Trump was a racist.” But now, she said, she had “put the red hat on, too.”“These are my people,” she said. “This is where I belong.”As if to underscore the point, Ms. Rose appeared on the giant screens at the convention hall again the next night. This time it was in a music video for “Trump Trump Baby,” a remix of Vanilla Ice’s 1990s hit, “Ice Ice Baby,” performed by Forgiato Blow, a self-described MAGA rapper. Ms. Rose wore a hefty gold chain with a medallion of Mr. Trump’s face.

The DeSantis and Haley camps each believed they would benefit if the other left the field and created an unambiguous one-on-one race with Trump. In fact, both the Trump and DeSantis campaigns believe that more of the Florida governor’s supporters will likely pick Trump. Any gain or loss for Haley among voters from DeSantis’ decision seems likely to affect the race only marginally, many GOP observers believe. Even at that point in the 2016 race, Trump had won only a cumulative 40% of the votes cast in the GOP primaries. His theory that he could peel away a meaningful number of previous Trump voters simply proved wrong.

Iowa Republicans were a clear reflection of that on Monday night, delivering the former president an emphatic victory. As clear-cut as his win was, though, Iowa has not historically played the role of kingmaker in the Republican nominating process. He chose to appear at court hearings as a defendant in his legal cases in New York and Washington rather than speak to Iowa voters in the final days before the voting. With its more moderate, educated electorate, New Hampshire presents Trump’s rivals with possibly their best opportunity to slow his march. Trump's strength among Republican voters is beyond dispute, but the road is long and could be bumpy.

Opinion | What a Petty Pair DeSantis and Newsom Made

It’s remarkable how fixated Ron DeSantis and Gavin Newsom have been on each other. These two opposite-party governors from opposite coasts of the country have been sparring — repeatedly, haughtily, naughtily — for more than two years. It was there at the start of the debate, when DeSantis, in the first minute of his remarks, managed to mention Newsom’s infamously hypocritical pandemic dinner at the French Laundry. It was there in the middle, when DeSantis brought up the French Laundry again. He noted that he and DeSantis had something “in common,” alluding to the fact that he himself is not making a White House bid.

Takeaways from the DeSantis-Newsom debate

Ron DeSantis opened a debate Thursday night on Fox News, Newsom told DeSantis the two had one thing in common. By the way, you’re down 41 points in your own state,” Newsom said. Hannity the ‘hall monitor’Hannity, the long-time conservative Fox host, opened the debate pledging to play a neutral role Thursday night. “It should be up to the mother and the doctor and her conscience.”What’s the value of a debate like this? Mostly, the more than 90-minute debate was DeSantis and Newsom accusing each other of lying and mischaracterizing the other’s records.

Who Has Made It to the First Republican Debate So Far? At least seven candidates appear to have made the cut so far for the first Republican presidential debate on Aug. 23. To participate, each candidate must first satisfy fund-raising and polling criteria set by the Republican National Committee. But even though Mr. Trump is clearly the dominant Republican candidate so far, he has remained noncommittal about attending the debate and questioned his need to share the stage with candidates who lag far behind him in the polls. As for the remaining hopefuls, they have three weeks left to scrape together the necessary donors and polling support.

Shevrin Jones, a Florida state senator and member of the Biden campaign’s advisory board of elected officials, said he’s eager to tell the country the story of what he’s seen under DeSantis’ leadership. Biden and DeSantis and their wives walk to meet with local residents affected by Hurricane Ian in Fort Myers, Florida, on October 5, 2022. The voter registration advantage Florida Democrats had when President Barack Obama narrowly won the state in 2012 has flipped to Republicans. An adviser to the former New York City mayor told CNN that so far, there has been no outreach to Bloomberg’s operation from either the Biden campaign or the DNC. There was also a fleeting belief that they could push Biden over the top in Florida – though Trump ended up carrying the state by 3 points.
Disney did not specifically blame DeSantis for the move, partly citing “changing business conditions.” But the message was clear. In keeping with his bruising political persona, DeSantis reacted defiantly to Disney’s announcement that it would halt the office project. “Ron DeSantis’ failed war on Disney has done little for his limping shadow campaign and now is doing even less for Florida’s economy,” the Trump campaign said in a statement. Another possible GOP primary candidate, former Vice President Mike Pence, also leveraged the Disney announcement to jab DeSantis. Given his political exposure on Disney and the combative political image that is central to his White House hopes, DeSantis probably has no option but to further escalate the showdown.
Opinion | Rational Approaches to Immigration

To the Editor:Re “On Immigration, Biden Should Out-Trump Trump,” by Thomas L. Friedman (column, May 17):Three cheers for Mr. Friedman’s lucid discussion of the murky topic of immigration. 2) We have a moral responsibility to be as generous as we can in welcoming people from around the world who come to us because of intolerable circumstances where they live. 3) The number of people in such intolerable circumstances vastly exceeds our ability to absorb all of them. 4) Because of this, we need to put limits on the number of needy people we accept into our country. 5) The limits we place should strike a reasonable balance between our self-interest and our compassion for those who are suffering.
In my view, President Biden should out-Trump Trump. Do everything possible to secure the border like never before — more walls, more fences, more barriers, more troops, the 82nd Airborne — whatever it takes. But not for the purpose of choking immigration: for the purpose of expanding it. What he didn’t distribute equally was which countries would most welcome the highest-energy, highest-intellect immigrants. If we throw that advantage away, as a country we will revert to the global mean.
