Carlos Barria | ReutersU.S. President-elect Donald Trump's ongoing pursuit of Greenland may have raised the hackles of Denmark, which retains sovereignty over the Arctic island, but his territorial ambitions seem to be gaining traction in an unlikely quarter: Russia. On Tuesday, Trump doubled-down on those comments and said he would not rule out using force to take Greenland, as well as the Panama Canal. Other pro-Kremlin pundits on the panel said Trump's ambitions validated Russia's decision to launch its own "special military operation" against Ukraine. That sentiment was reiterated by Greenland following Trump's comments in December, with Prime Minister Mute Egede saying: "We are not for sale and we will not be for sale" and that "Greenland belongs to the people of Greenland." Hours after Trump's comments in December, Copenhagen announced it would increase defense spending on Greenland to give it a "stronger presence in the Arctic."

President-elect Donald Trump is contemplating calling a national economic emergency to implement his wide-reaching tariff policies, four sources familiar with the matter told CNN. Also known as IEEPA, the act allows the president to oversee imports in a period of national crisis. CNN's sources noted that a final decision has not been reached on whether Trump will declare a national emergency. Trump pitched taxes on imports frequently on the campaign trail, calling at times for fees of 60% or more on Chinese products. The Washington Post reported Monday that Trump would narrow the focus of his tariffs, an approach Wall Street seems to favor.

They also come amid a widely publicized trip to the island by Trump’s eldest son, Donald Trump Jr. Some residents canvassed by KNR criticized Trump Sr.’s comments, saying they would prefer the island to remain under Danish control. “I see Donald Trump’s interest in Greenland as very dangerous,” said Greenlander Jens Danielsen. Another resident, Anguteq Larsen, told KNR he would prefer Greenland to be independent, without having to rely on either Denmark or the US. “So Greenland is not MAGA and Greenland is not going to be MAGA,” she said.

AI's significant impact on workforce and tech use will continue in 2025, leaders say. Talks of artificial intelligence dominated 2024, and tech leaders predict that the next stage of the new AI era will come in 2025 — for better or for worse. ADHere's what else Vogels, Delangue, and other tech leaders say 2025 has in store. ADAs smarter tech integrates into the workforce, Vogels said "a quiet revolution" is happening among workers who value meaningful societal impact over financial success. Now the criminal cases against him are in jeopardy — the two federal prosecutions have already been dismissed, while the two state cases are stalled — and appeals courts might whittle down the hefty civil judgments against him. The change in circumstance is largely due to Trump’s election win — the federal cases were dropped because of a Justice Department legal opinion that sitting presidents can’t be prosecuted, a position Trump’s lawyers have said should be applied to the state cases, as well. Trump's attorneys in his civil cases, meanwhile, are trying to use his soon-to-be office to their benefit, as well. His spokesperson, Steven Cheung, said in a statement that Trump's election was a "mandate" from the American people, who "demanded an immediate end to the political weaponization of our justice system and a swift dismissal of all the Witch Hunts against him. And if they pled guilty — then they pled we’re not guilty,” Trump said at the debate.

"We thank the Second Circuit for its careful consideration of the parties' arguments." CNN —A federal appeals court upheld the jury’s verdict finding Donald Trump sexually abused writer E. Jean Carroll and denied his request for a new trial. Trump challenged the $5 million civil verdict alleging the trial judge made numerous errors, including allowing testimony of two other women who claimed Trump sexually assaulted them. The appeals court concluded the trial judge didn’t abuse his discretion in ruling on evidence. A separate jury awarded Carroll $83.3 million after finding Trump defamed her by denying the sexual abuse. Trump denied all wrongdoing.

Apple Intelligence software is still expected to drive a super cycle in iPhone sales. The "biggest story" for 2025 will be the impact of the new Apple Intelligence software on iPhone sales, Gene Munster, managing partner at Deepwater Asset Management, said. "We expect Apple will ship more than 240 million iPhones in 2025, breaking its annual record," Wedbush Securities analysts wrote in their 2025 tech wish list. To do that, though, Munster says Apple will have to figure out how to get Apple Intelligence onto all eligible iPhones. Apple Intelligence will roll out to iPhone users in the European Union in April, Apple said on its website.

Interviews with more than a dozen individuals who worked with Patel shed new light on his path to power. After joining the White House as a member of the National Security Council, Patel became known as an aggressive colleague, sources say, often clashing with others. “The (FBI) director leads an agency that’s going after Russian and Chinese spies, mobsters, kidnappers,” one source familiar with the transition’s discussions about the FBI job told CNN. Earl Matthews, a former Trump official who worked with Patel in the White House, said he brings a unique resume to the job. ‘Why is Kash here?’By 2019, after Republicans lost their House majority, Nunes worked to make good on his promise to help Patel get to the White House.

President Joe Biden’s decision to pardon his son Hunter has earned plenty of criticism — and most of it, even the harsh partisan-tinged kind of criticism, has real merit. In hindsight, it turns out Joe Biden had a big vulnerability with his family when it came to serving as president. A word of warning to Democrats pulling a muscle trying to defend Biden’s decision here. I get the sense that many Democrats feel duty-bound to somehow defend Biden’s decision here even if they can’t defend it. CNN —Key Republican senators promised on Monday that President-elect Donald Trump’s pick to lead the FBI, Kash Patel, will be vetted through the confirmation process. At the same time, two incoming committee chairs suggested openness to Patel and Trump’s other nominees not undergoing full FBI background checks as has traditionally been done. CNN has reported that Trump’s transition team is bypassing traditional FBI background checks for at least some of his Cabinet picks. “No, I’ll let that be a decision that President Trump makes,” he said when asked if he will insist on background checks performed by the FBI. “My position is what President Trump decides to do is what I will support.”It’s unclear how many Republican senators would be open to not having FBI background checks for nominees, and other key senators have already affirmed the importance of background checks.
